Post the question, but have it just tell people to check your profile page. And then put the whole thing in your email address, and turn on the option that only allows members to view it.

If you posted something that is going to get you into trouble -- like, for instance, a really detailed request for homework help that could have been posted by only one person in the world -- you could ask very nicely to have that post deleted. I believe the correct form is to send a "hope me" message to the moderators and then hope that they and the stars are with you.

I can't recall the last time, if ever, I've made muted shrieking noises at the television. My wife covered her eyes as if seeing a horror movie. Yeah, one of the 1800-Got Junk guys didn't want to go in the bathroom, but another guy did eventually (probably after the producers slipped him a Benjamin or two). The really horrible thing about it all, though, was that the poor woman -- a "category 5 hoarder"*--seemed like she was operating at about 15% of normal emotional capacity. There was a bit of a breakthrough towards the end and she had a few tears and seemed to be coming back to life a bit, however.

But, I think that's enough art and entertainment for me for a long time. Only a few of their profiled people are really hoarders in the classic sense, the rest are suffering from various clinical depressions and other flavors of psychotic breaks from reality. The show is certainly a blatant exploitation, but it's not without some component of a public wake up call to people with lesser problems.

* Who the heck classifies these things? Meteorologists?

I watched that episode of Hoarders with horrified fascination. I wonder if a family member has ever bothered to take that woman to a neurologist. Based on her lack of affect and disconnection from reality I suspect she suffers from focal cognitive deficits caused by stroke or senility.

I am not a neurologist, but I do live with a crazy senile old lady with too many cats and my diagnosis-via-television are purty gud, akshully.
posted by BitterOldPunk at 12:08 PM on December 29, 2009

I think I have seen every single episode of Hoarders. Yes, I know, I should be ashamed of myself. Sometimes I have to turn away (especially when it involves feces and/or dead animals) but I can't stop watching. A&E should devote one of their Intervention episodes to Hoarders addicts.
posted by amyms at 12:12 PM on December 29, 2009

Based on her lack of affect and disconnection from reality I suspect she suffers from focal cognitive deficits caused by stroke or senility.

Her kids said that she had been like this for over twenty years, so it probably wasn't senile dementia or even a stroke. But, yeah, I think she had some kind of psychotic break or other classic nervous breakdown but was able to sweep its immediate consequences under her psychic rug and continue down the long spiral. Her children really couldn't be expected to have the necessary objectivity to see this as a neurological problem since they were still working on their own issues dealing with the trauma of coping with her. But, we don't get more than a passing gloss veneer of a back story with these people so we don't know all the sordid history.

Anyway, I might need therapy now!

Serious related question: Why is MetaTalk indexed?

Well for one thing before the site search was improved (and before the back-tagging and back-titling projects had completed) you really had to use google if you wanted to find anything in metatalk, so it's a good thing that it is indexed and I hope that never changes.

Twenty years, huh? Oh. I missed that bit. How sad. Almost as sad as the woman who had to lash herself into her chair so that when sleeping she wouldn't fall into PILES OF HER OWN FECES. Almost.

Gah. That show makes me want to scour myself with lye. Yet I watch it faithfully. I am a bad person.

My girlfriend is an anti-hoarder. We saw Up in the Air last night, and she took George Clooney's philosophy a little too much to heart; it summarized her own feelings. She spent yesterday going around the apartment, grabbing my possessions, and waving them at me, saying "Empty your backpack!"

Serious related question: Why is MetaTalk indexed? IMO, it doesn't contain any content that's of use to people outside MeFi, but it does contain a lot of ugly discourse that doesn't paint a good portrait of the community.

MeTa isn't just ugly discourse. The conversations here tend to be more passionate and intense, yes, but they're often a lot deeper and more interesting than what normally shows up in MeFi and AskMe threads.

I don't know if this is why, but there are ways to search using Google that are not available on the internal site search, and which are occasionally useful.

MeTa isn't just ugly discourse.

MeTa is some kind of analogue to video feedback. There's nothing there, but there can be something interesting in there anyway.

You know, my parents actually had one of them from an uncle of mine under the RCA brand. The family vids we have might be worth watching just to look at the semi-superior video quality on them (contrast to some of the early digital cams, do not desire a derail here...). Just wish it didn't break.

Posting ASCII images in MeTa is the internet equivalent of doing pullups in your prison cell.

The advice on "Yo Gabba Gabba" is quite sound for adults as well as children.

Don't bite your friends unless they ask nicely.

i did think of this when i was going to ask the architecture thesis question. i know 40 kids who are googling for architecture theses everyday. i had no idea my question would trigger so much dialogue. i kind of lost patience to read the posts after a while. no dearth of illustrations here though. and thank you zarq.
