Most Favorited Posts By Year? December 29, 2009 1:07 PM   Subscribe

Now that MeFi has over a decade under its belt, can we get "Most Favorited Posts in the Past Year?"

Metafilter is not Digg. The favorites system is not a popularity contest.

I never said it was?

It's alright, entropic, he just assumed the argument had started already.

Favorites have only been around since 2006 and we're not really sure how to use them yet. Check back in 2016.

But, snark aside, are you maybe just asking for more options on the "Popular Favorites" tab? Because we may not be Digg, but we already have that particular popularity contest running. So, like, 24 hrs/7 days/30 days/365 days/all time?

donnagirl: yes, exactly.

I think a rolling one-year addition to the tab would be nice. It would also have less of a contest-y feeling than "BEST OF 2009", etc, but I'm not really sure why. If you wanted to bother to check it on Dec 31 just before midnight, well, you could, but I think the lack of permanency would be a good thing.

Technically, the full data for 2009 will not be available until Sunday.

Given that, on the Blue, it's probably this one on the Resolute Desk, which is insane. On Ask, this one on cooking tips also has quite a few faves.

Funny thing is that both of those are probably for bookmarking to read later.

I find it funny that you find that funny.

The amazing thing is that it was only their 4th post since April 2005 - with those 4 posts averaging more than 100 favorites each.

It's like they're the Terence Malick of MetaFilter or something.

I think generally we use them to indicate we like something.

This annoys some folk.

I like something, but not in that way.

I propose 2017 is the year we run the see how things work without "Most Favorited Posts in the Past Year" experiment.

Here ya go. Isn't this what a year of podcasts is, essentially?

Let's just get the whole community on HotorNot and we can really put each other in the hierarchies we so clearly desire.

Recognizing a post as 'Most Favorited' has no current value because 'favorites' has too many meanings. I use favorites to bookmark and not as a rating. My favorited posts have utility for me as a reference and not as a critique score. As a former Type A who used to rate and time everything, I find the absence of merit ratings in the MeFi community very refreshing.

I dispense my favorites as God dispenses his favors -- randomly, with no underlying logic, and often to the undeserving.

I like this idea, for the same reason I like popular favorites and the sidebar. Not because I want to rank people, or turn the site into Digg or something. Mostly because I can't read every post and every comment on the site, and if someone posted something that a lot of people think is truly awesome, I'd rather not miss it.

Personally, I think the use of the word "favorite" is a bad idea, but that's not really what this post is about. Since the word isn't (likely) going anywhere soon, I don't see what the squawk is about making a minor and logical extension to an existing feature.

I like the word "favorite" and this proposal.
