Brad Graham memorial (followup) January 25, 2010 9:44 AM   Subscribe

Followup on the memorial for Brad Graham. (Previously here & here, donation page here). We've nearly reached our $5000 goal here, and have an additional contribution of about $3k, so I'm now in discussions with the Rep about how to use the money, and want to get a sense of your preferences.

From my contact at the Rep:

The list of the ideas we have had so far would include: an endowment gift;
underwriting one of Brad's favorite actors or directors; making some
improvements to the workplace as suggested by his colleagues; or plan a
small memorial garden next to our administrative offices (as we are on a
University campus, this would require prior approval before moving forward).

Your thoughts?

I'd vote for endowment or scholarships for incoming theater majors at the University?

Would there be a way to endow a visiting artist position? That way, the money could grow over time, but it could be used to underwrite Brad's favorite actors, directors, or other theater artists, too.

underwriting one of Brad's favorite actors or directors

No love for playwrights? Commissioning a play can be pretty cool. The play can be by a favorite living playwright, it can focus on an issue or situation dear to his heart, and it will always have that "dedicated to Brad Graham" in the front of the play book and all production programs.

Ooh, I meant to include playwrights, too.

I'm pretty much comfortable with anything they suggest though I'd love to have Brad's name on something somewhere, corny as that may be.

I'm with Mathowie. I went to Webster (and therefore worked at the Rep) as an undergrad theatrical design major and they really do have one of the best training programs in the country. It would be really great to see it go to one of their incoming students (many of whom don't come from particularly privileged backgrounds but pursue careers in theatre nonetheless).

The other options sound good too, but the Rep already has a beautifully landscaped garden so I'm less excited about that option. I also would let the artistic staff make the call about whether to commission a play or not. Putting on new works has long-range implications for a theatre (especially a subscription based one like the Rep) and I think that call should be made by the management.

Also, judith, what happened to the counter on that donation page? Last week it was at $4800 but now it shows 2600 or so for me.

The counter seems a little borked. I've been tracking donations separately on a spreadsheet. We have $3,685 from the Metafilter community and $3,320 from the other folks, for a total of $7,005. Paypal did end up taking fees from the Chipin contributions (though, weirdly, not from direct Paypal contributions) so I'll kick in the extra to cover that. I'll report back after I've talked to the Rep about the feasibility of the various ideas!
