Metafilter Ask/Tell (Interviews)? February 26, 2010 2:38 PM   Subscribe

Metafilter Interviews or Ask/Tell?

What do we think of the idea of having Mefites of Note (or even Non-Mefites of Note) participating in some sort of thread-based interview series? I'm not sure of what the exact format would be or the criteria for picking people, but I think it would be an interesting experiment. It seems like from time to time, mefites with really interesting stories pop up within threads, but because the thread isn't really _about_ them, we never get to follow up on it. I know there are podcast interviews, but those are few and far between. Thoughts? I realize this is an iffy idea, but wanted to throw it out there in case others are interested.

What exactly does "of note" connote? MeFites who hold interesting jobs, are interesting drunks, make interesting comments? Or prolific commenters? Is there a a correlation between proliferation and "of note"? What's the threshold?

Guy/Gal had a reasonable suggestion that may be good, may be bad, but could be discussed constructively. Mods: the last thing I'm wishing on y'all is extra work, but has there been any internal discussion regarding how reflexive MetaTalk threadshitting has become? It's tiresome and a bit pointless when interesting ideas are ignored in the name of "look at how clever I can be in derailing this".

Honestly, that's pretty much my favorite part of MetaTalk, which is pretty much my favorite part of MetaFilter. I like watching the powerusers strut their stuff, and generally the discussion will circle back around to the original proposal if it's of genuine interest.

Speaking of the proposal, as a non-poweruser, I would be interested in reading interviews of Mefites of note, and if a list of interesting questions was circulated as some kind of Me-meme, I'd probably look at the profiles of some users to see if they answered them. As long as it wasn't actually called a meme. I kinda hate that term.

I'm not thinking about a facebook survey.

What I'm thinking about is, let's say there's a front page post on Nascar, and somebody guys, oh, hey guys I was a Nascar racer for 15 years, let me tell you a little story.

As it is now, something like that gets sidebarred and that's the end of it, but I dunno, I think it would be a little cool if we could go, hey Nascar driver, if you're up for it, let's have a little back and forth where we talk a little bit more about who you are and what you did and how you ended up on metafilter, etc, without derailing the thread in question.

Mefi has lots of smart people who might ask smart questions, and I think it doesn't quite fit into ask metafilter, but maybe it fits in a little bit with metafilter's general atmosphere.

I like it.

But, you know, what you're describing could be done outside of MeFi, through MeMail or what have you, and the results could be posted on a private site. Then a FPP could be made.*

* This bends / breaks the guidelines about self-posting, of course. But of course, the "private site" could be something reviewed / curated by the moderators ahead of time.

How do you qualify to be a poweruser?
posted by iconomy at 4:59 PM on February 26, 2010

The same way you qualify to get on the sidebar. Someone posts something interesting that gets a bunch of flags, and one of the mods asks them if they want to do an interview thread. If the person is interested, an interview thread is started, and we just ask a bunch of questions that they can answer if they feel like. I'm not thinking anything formal, really.

I like the idea of interviews with interesting MeFites. Especially if they're conducted by interviewers who are interesting too. Something text-based seems more sustainable and inclusive than an audio podcast sort of thing, but that could be thread-based or just e-mail exchange with the results put online someplace, etc.

Err. I'm probably going to regret this, but I'd be happy to use my rusty journalism skills to do some interviews and write them up. I don't know where they'd be appropriate to post, but I imagine we could whip up a separate site (not-on-MetaFilter, that is), and it would be very easy to conduct the interviews either via e-mail or over the phone.

What I think would be really interesting is to start with the mods, because if we're talking MeFites of note, they're certainly notable, and most definitely interesting.

... but then again, I've never listened to the podcasts. There's a certain amount of (tedious) research that would go into prepping for such interviews.

I think a lot of people here who may not be of note are quite interesting.

It would be fun to just interview some random mefites. Pull up a random user number for someone who has commented in the last month. Who knows what we'll find. I envision something like this when we interview some random guy who has made six comments:

What's your job?

Uh, I'm a network administrator.

Why did you join Metafilter?

I'd heard about somewhere, and then I read this comment where some moron said Avatar was a metaphor for American imperialism and everyone knows that is a bunch a crap, so I ponied up $5 to blast this guy out of the water but the comment got deleted. I dunno. I haven't hung around much since. I think my wife has been using my account for some recipe shit in Askme. Who in the hell are you again?

Solid content, great recording, interesting stories - pretty much a template for what I think empath is suggesting.

Side note to the mods - it would be cool if the audio from the meetup was added to the meetup thread like the pictures are.

There were interviews in some early podcasts, and they were pretty terrific. I'd really like to hear more interviews. One idea might be to let independent producers do MeFi interviews and then submit them for inclusion on the podcast. I don't know if that's in line with what the mods use the podcast for, but it seems neat to imagine that any user could put together an audio segment for the podcast, and the mods could act as editors. Again, that may not be in line with the vision, or it might be too much work, but it's neat to think about.

Or if it were text interviews, heck, that'd be cool too.

I'd love to see some interviewing action happen, but I don't know if there's really a spot for them on the site per se, or at least if there ought to be prior to it being established that it's something that really works and has legs. If someone wants to really get on it and start putting interviews together, probably the best bet would be to start a little blog to collect them on, or maybe start up a subsection on the wiki.

I agree with Matt that including audio interviews in our podcasts seems like a cool idea. I regret neglecting the Music Podcast because I've enjoyed having those random little music discussions with folks, and I'd love to hear interviews by folks who actually know how to conduct one competently.

Side note to the mods - it would be cool if the audio from the meetup was added to the meetup thread like the pictures are.

Meetup audio hasn't been a big common thing as far as I can tell—if for some reason that really caught on we could certainly talk about it then, but for now I think just linking it in thread on the rare occasions that it does happen is the best plan.

SportsFilter does (did?) interviews just as threads in it's version of metatalk called 'the lockerroom'. Barbara Walters User worldcup2002 asks the questions and the interviewee responds. Others may make 'peanut gallery' remarks, which may or may not be ignored by the interviewer/ee. The last question is always "who should we interview next?"

They were great fun to read, but unfortunately most have been lost to the bit bucket. Some are archived on the SpoFi wiki, though. Maybe metafilter is too big for such a format to work; the peanut gallery comments were generally minimally distracting but that may not be the case here.

Is that near Whore Island, The Whelk? (Also, has anyone else been watching Archer on FX? it's as if they took Frisky Dingo, extracted my brain, mixed it in a blender and put it on the TV).

If we're going to do this, I think the fun way to do it would be Chain Reaction-style. It's a UK (BBC? can't remember, I just listened to the Alan Moore one) interview show where

Interview person A interviews interview person B and next week B interviews C, then C interviews D, then D interviews E...and so on.

Interesting MeFites interview other interesting MeFites. The challenge is coming up with an order of participants that makes it really good.
