Can we tag favorites, please? (Redux) March 11, 2010 5:12 PM   Subscribe

It's been about a year since I last posted asking for favorite tagging to be introduced. In that post, Matt said he thought that this was a feature that should be added, going so far as to do a mock-up of how it would work. He also said to bug him about its implementation "in a year after I've forgotten we should add it." I'm taking him up on that offer.

pb's last comment in that thread indicated they were working on it and it was a bigger job than first anticipated, so I can understand why it has taken some time.

But I really think that this feature will make favorites far more useful than they currently are and I'm keen to see its implementation. I'm hoping this timely, friendly reminder goes some way towards achieving that.

I would be so happy if this happened. Literally yesterday I started sifting through my thousands of favorites and saving them in Diigo (a bookmark manager) just so I could tag them and find them later.

I support this idea.

I going to tag this post as awesome as soon as I can. Mostly to piss off the guy who asked that people stop using that word.

I can't find the comment to link to, so I don't know who said it, but jessamyn said we don't have to stop using it so I am not!

I will tag cjorgenson's comment as 'cromulent' as soon as the feature is embiggened.

This is something we'll revisit soon. I know you've been waiting for this one, and I'm sorry we got your hopes up so long ago. Feature ideas come and go and not everything we build or want to build gets rolled into the site.

We're all in Austin right now (at a meetup!) so it will be a while before we can let you know if we'll be adding this back to our radar.

Yeah, I was gonna say, you probably shouldn't ask when they're all partying their asses off at SXSW. They may accidentally, drunkenly disable your accou---.........*pop*

I really hope you put a reminder in your calendar that prompted this post.

Serious question: why can't you just use del.icio.us? Is it that it's not built-in? There are countless bookmarklets / browser extensions / greasemonkey scripts to make del.icio.us as integrated as favorites currently are.

Yeah, but what about favourite flagging?

kidding

In the MetaFilter calendar. Pony?

If tagging favorites is too hard, how about favoriting tags instead?
As I noted in another recent thread about favorites, the mods have, in the past, said we should see and use favorites for whatever we think they should be used for. Until the favorite tagging option is introduced, I see favorites as being simply a quick way to assign a simple measure of indicative popularity to a post or comment and I think this is what most other people see the feature as being useful for as well.

Apparently select to copy and middle click to paste is a dangerous idea--I only meant to contribute the first line. Pastefail =(

While we're on the subject, I would like flavored flagging. Maybe a snozzberry flag, for posts that are especially delicious.

I would like tasered flagging. *begins composing multi-page chatfilter*

"flavored flogging"?!

It's fun reading threads without my glasses

How about capturing flags? We could have thread wars running flags around the site.

Could we tag tags too?

The upshot is that this give us another chance to be back-tagging superstars, going through our combined millions of favorites and labeling them all, "AstroZombie said something funny. Again."

All mods are wasted at SXSW?!?

Y'all tell your parents that you're staying at Reddit's house or whatever, and let's RAGE IT in here...!

I'll bring the Malibu rum, but please: Just don't puke in Quonsar's fishtank pants.

"AstroZombie said something funny. Again."

Please point me to the previous funny comment. That guy is boring as fuck.

I could see tagging if he said something funny, since everyone would want to see that, but this again stuff? Not sure where you are coming from.

It's not like he's fixedgear or something.

Gonna need a whole team to backtag tehloki's faves.

How did you know what I was drinking?

Matt's gone to bed so I think the answer is "not tonight"

That guy is boring as fuck.

My inner literalist just had his mind blown contemplating what exactly is boring about fuck.

As a coder, let me translate that for you: "It will probably never get done".

Not "Boring as fucking." That would be an oxymoron. Rather, "Boring as fuck." I do find the word fuck rather tiresome after a while, don't you?
posted by nebulawindphone at 7:57 AM on March 12, 2010

I await the argument about the correct tagging convention to tag a fave as "interesting" or "agreed" with baited breath.
posted by Solomon at 9:10 AM on March 12, 2010

You say that like those categories are either non-overlapping or the same. It's more than possible for a comment to be interesting, even though I don't agree; or boring, though I agree with it.... or, of course, either both or neither.
posted by FlyingMonkey at 12:14 PM on March 12, 2010

Not "Boring as fucking." That would be an oxymoron.

I know, right? It seems perfectly obvious! But if you think about it, boring and fucking actually do have quite an awful lot in common.
posted by Balonious Assault at 3:12 PM on March 12, 2010 [1 favorite]

I always understood "boring" to imply a rotary motion. Jackhammers fuck; drills bore.

So do literalists, apparently.

As far as tagging favorite comments: while it would be nice to be able to organize the many, many comments I've favorited over the years, I feel like it would end up being so cumbersome so have tags next to favorited comments appear in threads.

What about being able to tag our favorite comments internally? As in, on my own user-dashboard thing, I could see the favorited-comment-categories that I've created (e.g., agree/what-I-was-gonna-say/insightful/funny/thanks/so-true vs keep-for-reference, which is the main favorites dichotomy, imo.)

Maybe allow people's favorited-comment tags to appear viewable to others (if they want) on their profiles, so others can see them if they really want to, but not have a tag cloud (or list) appear along with the comment/favorite count itself in the thread.

I just can envision people wanting tags like "GoodForPookiesBirthday!" or "AwesomeForMyEmbarassingIssue." It seems like if tags are personal, we don't need to see all of them. On the other hand, maybe having the tag cloud appear on the http://metatalk.metafilter.com/favorited/(number)/(number) page wouldn't be so terrible...

Just putting this out there.
