Static Server Offline March 24, 2010 8:31 PM Subscribe
Static server outage. The site will have some problems until we get this sorted out.
Our server that hosts static files such as stylesheets, javascript, and images is down for the count. We're working on getting things moved, but the site will have some problems while we get static files running in a new location. Sorry about the hassle.

Wait, there's a server just for static? I thought it just appeared when the TV went off-air
What happens now if the tv goes off-air and there's no static server?

Can I ask a dumb question?
No one has these files backed up anywhere? No offline dev environment for meta?
I know everyone works differently, but if one of my sites died because a server somewhere went down I wouldn't be concerned about the files (in my case it would be the database).
Maybe I am missing something? Honestly asking, not trying to be an ass.

It's kind of silly, but the mefi.us stuff (a) is pretty light-weight compared to e.g. the db server which gets a lot of backup attention and (b) has never had a problem in several years.
Which isn't obviously a great argument, but it's one of those things where low stakes plus no prompt to action can lead to just not doing stuff you'd otherwise do.

You're not missing anything cjorgensen, we just took our static server for granted. We should have absolutely had triple redundant backups of all the files there, but we didn't. This particular machine has always been a rock while everything else has been flaky, and it's always been out of the way. Nothing on it is as mission-critical as our server code or our database. But when it stops responding you realize how important it is.

Thanks.
Dropbox has totally changed the way I do my sites. I do all my admittedly crappy design with the files there, then upload those to the various sites I have. The databases I never remember to backup. So I did right after my above comment.
I used to have a backup drive that I sneaker netted between my various computers because firewire is faster than network, and not all my home computers were networked back then. I also wasn't as paranoid about backups. I knew they were good, so I did them, but that was a big drive, so I started storing things on it to make space.
Once day I brought it to work, set it on my desk, sat down, reached out to grab the cable, and knocked it the 3 feet to the floor.
Surre, I had the data that was on all my computers still, and if it had only been a backup, I would have been fine. The sinking hallow feeling that didn't go away for days was all because I had no idea what I'd even lost.
So I wasn't trying to get preachy. I was just thinking there had to be another reason why you would need those files.
I had flashbacks to a post on meta where a popular site just folded because of a loss of their database. I don't remember a lot of the details. I think it was malicious deletion and the owner had no backup.
I guess I should start thinking about what happens it dropbox folds. I guess since I have all those files on the web host I'd be mostly fine unless they went down at the same time.
I do a variation of what Gruber wrote a bit back.
Ok, I guess I did get a bit preachy, but everyone could use a reminder to backup.
I could tell so many stories.

I have no idea if this is related, but now the text on the front pages of MeFi, AskMe and MeTa 'jumps' down below the sidebar once it's fully loaded. The other subsites don't do this. I'm using Chrome on Windows 7.
To explain further, when it's loading, the posts on the subsites are right where they usually are, but then once the page has loaded, the posts jump so that the top post aligns with the bottom of the sidebar.

Yeah, the main problem with the static file server was that it had something like three years of uptime, so we treated it like a permanent appliance.
Looks like a secondary hard drive failed, and if all goes well they'll swap it in a couple hours and we'll be back to normal (I don't even think we were using the second drive for anything).

Confirmed that on the Ask and MetaTalk front pages, Kattullus with Chrome 4.1 on XP. Seemed to be related to some missing images. Once I replaced the images and did a hard refresh the problem went away. Can't confirm that for Windows 7, but you might try Ctrl+Shift+R and see if you still have the jumping text.

Quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we need all that for the trip, but once you get into locked a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Very astute observers might find the drink name I used a little fishy. But I guess it would be spooky if a bunch of people caught on that it would have made this an alphabet+drink name+reference to the previous poster's name thread. A sign perhaps that they need to drink more. Something containing vermouth?

Anything but the tedium of the plain-jane alphabet thread. A sop to the idea of artificial restrictions as creative stimulant, the restriction is too low a hurdle for persons of mefite-standard verbal skill. So you need to start your sentence with 'y' and the next guy with 'z'-next thing you know you have a hundred boring comments. More restrictions allows the cream to rise, cf. our name game:
awwwww, that's really sweet marie.
At this point it's just a chuckle-worthy one-off...
gee man, that's really nice of you to say that.
...gnfti's solid effort signals the actual beginning of the game...
Yeah, he's good news for everyone who hangs out in MetaTalk.
...FishBike raises the bar. Unobvious, makes contextual sense wrt the ostensible thread of the conversation, not forced, funny, requires a little thought to put together but not too much...
FISH ON A BIKE
...cortex subverts the paradigm...
He's a little misogynist, though; women need gman like, well, like...hmm.
...My effort is clearly weaker-gman hasn't done anything misogynistic so this makes no sense in the context of the source conversation-it's just stuffed in. Also lacking LOL.
Quit your kwhining
...a reasonable effort with difficult source material...
I have been trying to buy an eri nearly everywhere but I can't get a firm grip on how much I would have to pay for such a thing.....
...forced, somewhat nonsensical, too long, not that funny-sorry jessamyn.
-----
Things get a little difficult and weird over the next thirty comments-there are things there that I know I don't get, but that's way better than struggling to stay awake as the alphabet thread scrolls through my recent activity.
