Static server outage. The site will have some problems until we get this sorted out. [more inside]
To what was setanor referring when he made this remark in the Falcon Heene thread yesterday? [more inside]
We set up a new domain for hosting static content like scripts and images at mefi.us. You might want to add it to your NoScript whitelist. [more inside]
Isn't it mildly (or greatly) annoying when a commenter makes a second comment in order to correct some small spelling error? How about we refrain from joining joke pile-ons focused on those errors? Sometimes they're funny, for a limited time. Often, they start as or quickly become noise. I think they are a reason for people's nervously jumping back in to add the missing f onto that 'of,' which act is itself noise. [more inside]
When I'm not logged in, the most recent posts on the MetaTalk frontpage don't show up. (More inside.)
For exceptionally long threads, would it be more CPU-friendly to stop rendering new pages every time someone clicked into the page after a certain point? Say, arbitrarily, 100 posts?
Despite all the new RAM, at least from Europe, access is reaching 11.9 levels of difficulty. Is static-rendering possible? This time users are trusting MetaFilter more than the usual sources, as it does a great summing up job.
In the past day or so, external links are no longer opening in a new window. I'm using IE 5 for the Mac. I've confirmed the preference didn't change.
can anyone else not log in? i'm getting the "This main page is currently being rendered as a static page . . . if you're logged in, you'll be able to comment" message on the front page. so i log in, and it takes me to "Thanks for logging in, you're now ready to jump directly to the index page," which i do, but it still says i'm not logged in. i've tried refreshing, but that doesn't work, either. any advice?
I've restored the main page for members, non-members will get a page that is somewhat static and updated every five minutes. I've removed the custom sorting options for non-members, since it's an expensive query. I'm trying to minimize resource use, as the server is getting pummelled now. In the long term, I'll continue doing optimizations with the code and server, and hopefully be picking up the latest release of ColdFusion server (5.0) and some more RAM.
How long will metafilter's static-html "crisis mode" last? It's become quite difficult to follow and participate in conversations without the "New: X" portion of the comments link.
Logout - this does not appear to be working in metatalk. Using IE 5/Win2000, i select the logout link and i get redirected to the homepage where it appears that i am logged out. However, if i select a thread, when i enter that thread on the http://metatalk.metafilter.com/thread.cfm? page, i am still logged in. i do not believe it is a cache issue.
