Hesitate to credit evil when foolishness will do. I see all sorts of maliciousness attributed to my past self-favoriting. Here is the equally unflattering but true reason that used to happen. I thought it was a good way to get back to my comments. If I'd opened my eyes I would have seen that feature is already built in to metafilter. If I've queered the stats, my appologies and please tell me how to fix the problem. One email to me might have prevented all those comments about me. Sorry again, and know I have quit that mistaken habit. Metafilter is not a nest I want to soil.

You can favorite anything you like, including your own comments and posts.

I think "soiling the nest" would be posting slashfic about mathowie.

All those comments back in November? I think its safe to say we've all moved on since then. There are some sins that nothing can wash away, but I'm pretty sure self-favoriting isn't one of them.

It's not a big deal, eccnineten. Self-favoriting is unusual, but if it's useful for you we don't really care if you choose to do so. Favorites don't count for anything, and there's nothing that mild outlier behavior can do to any stats that are important (other than create an interesting little "huh!" moment for people looking in detail at favorites distribution for recreational purposes or whatever).

People may occasionally notice it and comment on it because its unusual and can be uncharitably read as some sort of self-serving or self-aggrandizing thing; you are aware of that now, and can decide whether that has an effect on your favoriting habits, but, again, not really a big deal.
