Metafilter Aggregator May 21, 2010 11:21 AM   Subscribe

This morning I asked a question on Ask Metafilter, and while doing a little more post-question searching, I found my own question on a site called Newsified which seems to be a link aggregator.

While I realize that a search engine caches lots of this anyway, I'm curious whether Newsified is allowed to do this.

Hmm. That's kind of annoying, I'll ask them to stop.

but..but...that's so reasonable.

In my imagination I picture this reasonable request being delivered in person, while he's accompanied by several thoroughly unreasonable characters. It's probably a good thing the real world does not, in general, work that way.

I'd like to make an aggregator site that aggregates the aggregations of other aggregator sites. That'll teach them. Stinkin aggregators mumble clogging up google search results grumble

Just imagine it more like him saying "I'll allow you to leave..." in Fist of Fury.

It occurred to me that it would be mildly ironic if my post about their aggregation, was subsequently aggregated by them, leading to some sort of internet black hole.

But it wasn't, so we are all safe.

The proper translation of matt's "I'll ask them to stop" is something about crushing enemies, driving them before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women. Or so the special greasemonkey script I have tells me.

I applaud your optimism in thinking that we are all safe due to this not (so far) causing an internet black hole. But I must ask you sir or madame, do you not realize that actual black holes are still, at this very moment, stalking us?

I saw this years ago but thought the proper people gave it their ok. Guess not.

For anyone who doesn't feel like downloading that greasemonkey script:

Therefore, you men of Newsified,
Take pity of your site and of your users,
Whiles yet my Mefites are in my command;
Whiles yet the cool and temperate wind of grace
O'erblows the filthy and contagious clouds
Of heady murder, spoil and villany.
If not, why, in a moment look to see
The blind and bloody Mefite with foul hand
Defile the locks of your shrill-shrieking userbase;
Your mods taken by the silver beards,
And their most reverend heads dash'd to the walls,
Your naked trolls spitted upon pikes,
Whiles the mad SEO Optimizers with their howls confused
Do break the clouds, as did the wives of Digg
At Reddit's bloody-hunting slaughtermen.
What say you? will you yield, and this avoid,
Or, guilty in defence, be thus destroy'd?

Remember, MeFi is the WebVisionary. It's very simple. Matt just points to his watch and says, "TIMES UP."

I'm glad to see this. A while ago I noticed a similar site that does stuff like that with our contributions to Music. There's actually a few of those, but this one is particularly annoying because it's called you can be a star. If they too were asked to stop it, I would really appreciate it.

This is just one of those things that happens in the age of RSS. Why, even my blog about social media twitter facebook marketing SEO 2.0 consulting gets aggregated at times. Some people will stop at nothing to game the system.

oy, micayetoca, that youcanbeastar site is tacky as all.....[insert tacky here].

This week, I've learned that you don't want to aggregate in front of a ninja school. Or edbles.

Yeah, there are several of these that grab MeFi Music songs. It's always irked me.

Damn, I didn't get to see what they were doing for sure. The site looks fine and boring. Is it just they they are grabbing content from other sites?

Ask seems like an odd choice, but digg, which is just links to other sites seems like fair game.

Well, if the annoyance has been stopped I guess I don't need to know why it was annoying after the fact.

I've had a song I put on MeFi Music turn up on other sites too. And some have offered it as a downloadable ringtone!
