Chicago meetup, anyone?

Lizarrd and I will be in Chicago from June 16th to June 20th for Puerto Rican festivities and fun, and are interested in a meet up on one of those nights. Of course we're amateurs when it comes to Chicago and have no suggestions for where/what, but is anyone interested? And if so, are you interested in helping pick a place and time? Thanks!

Tentatively fuck yes! I might be able to make it for the weekend but I'm in Champaign-Urbana (3 hours from the city) so it will be tricky.

That's it, I'm exhausted. I love you guys but it's time we have a jumping-out ceremony where you all beat me up and I can stop stumbling into work with my hungover pallor carefully masked behind a faceful of creative cosmetic work.

I have never been to a meetup, but in light of recent events, this Chicago resident will be attending the next official Chicago meetup. Because if I or a loved one is ever almost human trafficked, I want to know who I'll be thanking the next day.

Not to be *THAT* guy, (Which one, you ask? *THAT* one, I reply) but given the success of our last mid-month extra meetup pizza party, sh.. should we have another mid-month extra meetup pizza party?

Pequod's?
June 18th?
6PMish?

Hearing more votes for the weekend than against, so there you have it.

Also doesn't have to be a pizza party, or if it does, it doesn't have to be Pequod's.

Hell, it doesn't even have to be six.

EVERYTHING CHANGES.

As for why no weekends for the TINCC, well, I'll just reiterate Our Fearless Leader eamondaly: if you put it in the side bar, someone will show up.

Anyway, we do weekends, i guess, sometimes, when someone decrees it, but mostly people are busy and midweek seems to bring out the most people, plus we've been doing it on wednesday for a long time now.

Juliet Banana stood wearily on the streets on Andersonville. She had made the mistake of signing the lease on an apartment before actually seeing it, trusting the word of her boyfriend. Though the landlord promised all renovations would be done before their move in date, at this point the living space resembled nothing so much as a crowded rabbit Warren, a labyrinthian hamster cage, a hoarder's hovel full of jumbled drywall, broken tile, and exposed wiring.

Her boyfriend tried to distract her from the obvious predicament. "Have you ever been this far north in Andersonville before?"

"I dunno, probably," she mumbled, scanning the street for any familiar landmarks.

She gasped.

Her new apartment, which she was contractually obligated to live in for a year, was directly across the street from Cafe Bong.

I would agree with Giordano's on June 18th. I shall poke hoperaiseshell and see what she thinks about it. We should be able to move around a bit more as we shall have a car handy.

If anyone has any strong feelings AGAINST Giordano's please let them be known!

People have very strong feelings about deep dish. I got a free Lou Malnati's pie a few weeks back and I was carrying it home through Wrigleyville.

Now, I get strangers trying to talk to me everyday. Maybe they just want change or cigarettes, maybe they want to fuck me and think that random girls on the streets actually want to be approached about such things, maybe they just want to drunkenly yell I LIKE YOUR SOCKS out of their car window. Whatever. I am used to it.

I have NEVER, ever, had so many strangers call things at me as when I was toting a Lou Malnati's box on my shoulder. It felt kind of good; for once it had nothing to do with the fact I have a vagina or the length of my skirt, it was only about the pizza. Everyone fucking wanted some of that Lou Malnati's.

And then I took it home and ate it all myself, ha ha ha ha.

posted by lizarrd at 7:49 PM on May 30, 2010

8pm is a little late... could we do 6? I mean if it goes on for a couple hours like these things usually do... or we could move it to the Goat at 8... the Goat's only a few blocks away, right?

Sorry, I'm really not trying to dictate your meetup, it's just I've got a train schedule to consider. And I've been promising to come for a while and haven't because stuff keeps happening, and I really feel like I have to make this one.
posted by IndigoRain at 9:32 PM on May 30, 2010

I vote for a little earlier as well, if only because it's kind of pointless for me to go home after work and then come back down. If we move it a wee bit earlier, I'll show up, at least, and anyone who can't make it until 8 will probably get there right about the time we drunkenly decide what pizzas we want to order.

Wait, they Giodorno's has a liquor license, right? (stricken, panicked, hoping for craft beer)
posted by Juliet Banana at 4:03 PM on May 31, 2010

Don't pressure the thread to become active before it feels ready, tzikeh. Take it slow, take the pressure off, and before you know it, the thread will feel comfortable enough with you to open up on a whole new level.
posted by Juliet Banana at 10:17 AM on June 6, 2010

Hee, Juliet.

I realized after I left the house that when I said "been abducted by aliens (or Doctor Who)" that, of course, Doctor Who is an alien, and I might get mocked! Mockity mock mock! But then I thought, these are people who would mock other people for not knowing that the Doctor is an alien; these are my people.

I really should come to a meetup one day. I don't know if I will come to this one... I'm extremely averse to having my picture taken. I'll happily take pictures of everyone else, if someone wants to post them (and brings a camera).
posted by tzikeh at 2:57 PM on June 6, 2010

Well, we don't really take pictures that much any more; we've seen each other enough times we remember and recognize each other by face, or sometimes by scent if necessary.
posted by Windigo at 7:18 PM on June 6, 2010

Yeah, honestly, I haven't seen a camera get whipped out in FOREVER. I used to take photos but quickly stopped when I realized that if I took 20 photos at every meetup my Flickr page would be all internet nerds brandishing tiny beers instead of all photos of me dressed like a posthipster space alien that gets me lots of creepy fanmail from sock fetishists.

Not that I really enjoy those emails, but, you know. If someone specifically disliked having their photo taken, I can promise that everyone would make such a tiny, tiny, tiny deal about not taking their picture, because it's just the respectful thing to do.

We really need to make a thread for the apparent TENS OF PEOPLE who have some sort of fear or reservation holding them back from MefiChi meets (which are totally a safe place) that just calmly and politely explains that y'all bitches are crazy. If your particular brand of anxiety or perceived social awkwardness is holding you back from sitting in a room of really quite friendly and nonthreatening and pretty uncool and unintimidating fellow nerds, well, that's OK, but we're all special snowflakes and we were all nervous at first and we all are pretty much the least threatening group of people ever. If anyone expects us to be doing blow off each other's perfectly sculpted and tanned scantily clad bodies while we make catty remarks about your posting history and in jokes that you'll never get, you are sorely mistaken about what goes on at Mefi Meets.

WE ARE SO NOT SCARY.

That was totally not aimed at anyone in particular. I just feel like this is something that comes up fairly frequently and while it's totally, totally, totally OK for people to have problems stepping outside of their social comfort zone I feel like a lot of people's fear comes from misunderstanding exactly how nonthreatening Mefi Meets are. If the nonexistant Cabal was going to tar and feather anyone and run them out of town, my drunk loud annoying ass would already be more downy than a feather pillow and halfway to Indiana.
posted by Juliet Banana at 8:03 PM on June 6, 2010 [1 favorite]

Damn, Juliet, you mean I finally got up the guts to come to this thing and I'm not gonna get to do blow off eamon's beard? Actually, what kept me from coming as much as social fear is lack of fundage for parking and/or train fare fear of walking to & from the train station alone. Train fare is $14 and that doesn't count the restaurant bill.

So anyways, do we need to make reservations? How big is this Giordano's? I'm probably bringing my BFF, and my friend from Woodstock is going to meet us there with her fiancee and 2 kids, so I'm potentially in for 4 adults, a 5-year-old, and a baby.

And I am TOTALLY taking pictures, even if it makes Juliet feel like a sideshow attraction. (/Twitter reference.) However, I will probably not upload them without permission. And while I'd feel better if people didn't upload pics of me without my permission, I realize I can't control anyone so if you do upload them, please show me where they're at so I can see if I look like a dork or not!
posted by IndigoRain at 9:20 PM on June 6, 2010

we were all nervous at first.... WE ARE SO NOT SCARY.

Oh man, I am so not nervous or afraid of walking into a group of (meatspace) strangers; I love meeting new people and have absolutely no problem showing up for a lunch or dinner full of people I've never met. My, problem is my own self-consciousness about how much weight I've put on since I was in shape I KNOW SHUT UP I KNOW ALREADY

Misscaz: Dr Who is himself an alien, as are all of the villians he conquers/ass-kicks/sends away/etc.

Is it true that. in twenty-six seasons, the vanquished baddie has never once been human? This fascinates me, if true....

Oh, you are asking the wroooong person there. I just recently got into the show and have been catching up on the "new" Doctor series on Netflix while also watching the current season. This means I've only seen the Eccleston episodes, a couple Tennant ones so far, and all the current Matt Smith ones.

So I think you are reading me a bit too literally. Perhaps I should have said "most."

I was going to make a lame joke about some kind of drink we should have at the meet-up that would reference Doctor Who, but the only ones I can think of are Star Wars or Star Trek drinks. (I suppose a Banana Daiquiri would count, but that's kind of sad and not very science fictiony at all.)

So I'll be a bit early; I can text you when I get to Giordano's if you don't want to kill a bunch of time in the park or if you get mauled by Tuscan Raiders text me and I'll come rescue you, with a WHOOOOOOOOOAHHHHHHHHHH-EYYYAH krayt dragon call to scare off the louche sand creepsters.

It should be pointed out that I am currently drunk and watching Star Wars.

Also, it should be pointed out that I haven't had Giordano's since I was 15. I remember it having several inches of meat on it, much like your mom. However, I went to Great Lake tonight and I must say that any pizza I eat from now on is going to have an awful lot to live up to.

Last night's Chainlink meetup was a 45 second bike ride from my house at The Fireside. Normally my nights out involve a 5-7 mile trek home and 2am left turns through six way stops in the pitch black so I try not to get super wasted because after a certain number of beers the problem is not going to be "Lorena getting hit by a car," it's going to be "Lorena riding into something or falling off her bike because she's a fucking idiot."

Not that that's ever happened or anything. Ahem.

So, anyway, normally I drink lots of water and limit my beers and get condescending "what a wimp" look from keeblers who live miles closer to the bar than I do and responsibility is rad and all but it is not the easiest thing to keep up bar night after bar night and I really rejoiced at being sent a shining beacon from the gods that I could go out and get trashed and hell, WALK my bike home if I needed to.

The idea of going out and doing another internet meetup is kind of horrifying to me right now but it's 7am and I'm hungover and trying to type this on the bus for no good reason, and hopefully by the time the clock strikes quitting time I'll be slightly more enthused.

posted by Juliet Banana at 7:10 AM on June 18, 2010

The only time I've ever fallen off my bike was after too many tiny beers at a Metafilter meetup. (It was also hydrophonic's fault, because I thought we were going to speed through a yellow light but then he stopped at the last minute and I had brand new clipless shoes/pedals and could not clip out in time. Result = hilarious slow motion tip-over.)

Today I did not wear my clipless shoes for that very reason. Although I will also keep the drinking under control because a 9 mile ride home, possibly in the rain, and while drunk, is a bad idea even in Chuck Taylors.

When I drove home from the train station it was hailing. No car damage, luckily. But our train left 10 minutes late and then had to pull over twice for trains going in the opposite direction, so we were half an hour later getting to the station than the schedule indicated.

Funny story from the ride home - police walked through the train with drug-sniffing German Shepherd and the guy in front of us freaked out and threw his pot in the toilet. Oh, and the engineer announced over the loudspeaker to the conductors that there was a passenger hanging out of the back of the train, but we didn't get to see that one.

BEST MEETUP EVAR! Okay, so it was my first. But I felt like I was instantly among a big happy family. It was a GREAT time! I was so happy to meet all of you! I can't wait to come back! I sometimes feel shy meeting strangers but I felt no anxiety whatsoever around you guys! And thanks all for helping me out with Julie. She was feeling pretty uncomfortable at first and wanting to leave but then she decided you were a great group of people. :)

Huge thanks to Adam for taking us back to the train station. :)

...and I just looked at the pics... man, did my hair ever get messed up in the rain! ha!

Except for the pile of vom on the train home, an excellent time was had.

The party's not over yet. I'm up, eating chips and watching Bram Stoker's Dracula on AMC. Wooo!
posted by misskaz at 12:47 AM on June 19, 2010

Ok, Dracula sucked so thanks to Netflix I'm watching Ghost in the Shell. Expect to fall asleep soon...

Karen. Go to sleep. If I can pull myself away from Deus Ex, you can manage to abstain from anime. I hope.

I've been working since I got home. Booooooooooooooooooo.

And damn it, now I want chips.

For those who weren't with us, Blue Frog 2: Electric Boogaloo was okay. Not as good as the original (and a lot less divey), but by the end there was a pretty solid karaoke crowd. I have to say it was a bummer that the emcee closed out the evening with "Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy." Lame!
posted by evisceratordeath at 7:40 AM on June 19, 2010

Dammit, evisceratordeath. Just reading the name of the song got in back in my head. Curse you!
posted by misskaz at 8:25 AM on June 19, 2010

Quick, start singing I've Had The Time Of My Life. That's what I'm doing, anyway.
posted by evisceratordeath at 8:34 AM on June 19, 2010

I did have the time of my life! I really did!
posted by eamondaly at 8:40 AM on June 19, 2010

And, as it turned out, we had chips in the pantry THE WHOLE TIME.
posted by eamondaly at 8:40 AM on June 19, 2010

Well, there ya go, chips. We managed to stumble to the couchsurfing place where I ended up scarfing down some of the leftovers and promptly went to sleep.

The best karaoke song ever if you haven't heard it is: Convoy by CW Macall.

I have the ultimate earwash, EvisceratorChris. Please go listen to this Javelin song and then make sure to see Javelin play Lollapalooza so I can live vicariously through you.

I really wish this song was mainstream enough to be in karaoke catalogs because I really want to scream "Your anaconda won't get none unless you got a condom" in a crowded bar.

All I know is that I woke up this morning and my throat felt like I had been enthusiastically singing along to karaoke and chain smoking. Which is quite surprising, really.
posted by PMdixon at 9:12 AM on June 19, 2010

Y'all are awesome. That was my first karaoke experience EVAR and it was great! Now I'm off to the zoo to terrify my friend's child with my lack of voice.
posted by betty botter at 9:20 AM on June 19, 2010

You should really play it up by interspersing your conversation with random Emperor quotes. "How did you like the zebra? Take your father's place at my side."
posted by adamdschneider at 9:37 AM on June 19, 2010

I'm still bummed cittehkitteh and I didn't get to sing Bad Romance. It would have been epic.

Is that the green bag?

Sure is!
posted by eamondaly at 11:57 AM on June 19, 2010

The green bag is a solid chip. I'm a big fan of the brown bag (El Milagro) as well.

I want a song called Rad Bromance.

DAMMIT I am so sorry I missed this, even with the rain and the hail and the wait at Giordano's.

It sounds like an awful lot of you guys were there!

For someone upthread who said "Never again" re: Giordanos, I would point out that it was a Friday night, after work, downtown, in a rainstorm of Biblical proportions. Something like a Tuesday, and maybe with a reservation, might work better.

Phooey. I hope there's another mega-meetup at some point. I'm *especially* sad to have missed all you guys' singing!

Oh, hey - who all in Chicago and the surrounding area has a twitter account?

I'm tzikeh (big shock, I know)

I would like to point out that Eamon is secretly a big softy.
posted by Windigo at 3:55 PM on June 19, 2010

El Milagro's a damn fine chip, but El Ranchero (green bag) has the superior grease/salt profile.

Windigo: "I would like to point out that Eamon is secretly a big softy."

Yes and according to my friend, he's cute too. ;)

I'm sorry to have missed pitseleh and tzikeh.

I only got to check out the Goat for a few minutes... our train left at 8:40 and if we weren't on it we'd have been waiting until 11 for the next one. Which wouldn't have been a problem had I been alone. I love karaoke!
posted by IndigoRain at 8:48 PM on June 19, 2010

Honestly, Tzikeh, I'm nit sure it was all that much huger than our normal ones. There were a fair amount of out-of-towners but we had our usual amount of tables at the Goat.
posted by Juliet Banana at 7:37 AM on June 20, 2010

I don't know who this Eamon you're referring to is, but I look forward to meeting him at a future meetup.

You wouldn't like him. His beard is mightier than yours.

HEAR YE HEAR YE

SO!

A little bird has told me that this Thursday is very special.

IT'S GINNY'S BIRTHDAY! PARTY AT THE BONG!

I don't know all the details, but apparently a little party is being thrown, with Korean food and merriment. So says the bartender, Daniella.

I mean, obviously, this needs to happen. I shall try and find out more info, as my friend passed along the info to me and he was a bit drunk at the time.

Aww, man, Thursday I'm doing the smallest bike bar crawl ever (basically me and one/two friends riding around Wicker Park and getting shitty). I have to come home at some point, though....

Also Julie has renamed the site, she asked me if I was on Medifilter. Perhaps that's what we should call all the "OMG go to the ER" posts.

Indigo - I constantly mis-type it as "MeatFilter."

If anyone remembers me drunkenly submitting "keebler" to Urban Dictionary from The Goat, you will be happy to know it's totally up now. Go forth and vote it up, please.

Or just use it constantly in conversation like MT, Adam, and I (aka the cool kids).

And you've got no banged up knee-bler(s)
Then you might not be a keebler
