Hello. Thank you. This is my official post hospital, hotel and apartment update.

Sorry for the delay - this post is way overdue. Thanks for your patience. I've been licking my wounds and resting a lot and just processing a lot of different things and just savoring being alone and more or less independent and unentangled for the first time in a long, long time.

My post-hospital checkup and x-ray went well and I have my stitches out. I'm still a bit more winded then I'm used to being but that's to be expected. All things considered I'm healing very fast and my lung capacity and function is remarkable.

This has everything to do with having a proper bed in a decent hotel room in which to heal up in. I was sleeping on a camping pad in a dusty, cluttered corner on a floor. I was going through contortions to just exist and survive under a lot of stress and there's no way I could have recovered so much or so quickly on that floor or worse on the streets. If I was on the streets I don't think I would have healed much if at all.

The apartment is... amazing. It's really hard to describe after living out of backpacks and boxes for so long. I've been in random, bizarre, unconventional, nomadic or outright dangerous living situations for just about ten years. I'm still getting used to the ideas of so many things. Like turning the lights off, or the fact I have a fridge, a stove and a kitchen. Re-learning how to buy food in bulk instead of worrying about portable, single-serving food. Cooking something whenever I want. My own bathroom to use whenever. The ability to leave my shoes wherever and not get bitched out. The ability to sleep when I need to, read or just lay down or whatever. I really don't know what to do with myself yet but I'm working on it.

Utilities are on, I've got my own mobile wireless broadband internet turned on. (Clear 4G - it actually works for me as my apartment and general places of travel are all in the sweet spot, so I usually get good/great speeds.) I've got a bed-like object and it's weird and cheap but it's mine and more than I've had in a long while.

On the flip-side I'm a bit freaked out by the responsibility of having my name on a lease, on the utility bills and all that, but I really want to make this stick and have my own home base to grow from.

I like my apartment, my city, my therapist and the programs I'm in and they're working with me and the new apartment. I'm in the best of possible places to do what I need to do. I may qualify for some rehab grants to go back to school, which I really like the idea of doing. Going back to school and staying there for a while wouldn't be a terrible thing if I could swing it.

Part of my rational and irrational trepidation as I mentioned in a previous thread is that now it's time for the hard, painful work of digging into ancient wounds and confronting the issues I need to address in therapy - we started digging at my last session on Monday and it was rough. I came home and had nightmares and other reactions, but it's working. Some things are fixable, others perhaps not so much - but so far it's working.

I don't know what else to say but thank you. I'm a little overwhelmed by being in the spotlight like this, by the outpouring of support and generosity, about everything. Thank you so much.

Oh yeah, pictures. Here are some I grabbed before I cluttered up the joint. I'm planning on actually getting into trying to figure out where to put stuff this weekend, so I should have some "after" pictures when I get around to it.

Ach, this makes the heart warm in every way. I'm so glad your emergency turned into an entrance into the better life you deserve to be living. Congratulations on your independence, well done on standing brave against your demons, and may you be surrounded by all the strength and love you need to help you through the process.

You don't know me, but count me in as one more person available if you ever need an ear or shoulder (that's all I can do right now, other than millions of good wishes). I've been through situations with similarities, as have many loved ones, so no shocks here, just support.

TL;DR: Congratulations! I'm glad it feels good.

On the flip-side I'm a bit freaked out by the responsibility of having my name on a lease, on the utility bills and all that...
I understand how this feels. That said, things like utility bills can be set up in a number of ways so that they're easy for you. See about getting an automatic bill payment. This has helped me in so many ways. As long as you get notified via e-mail/SMS (pro tip: skip paper billing) of the cost & when the payment takes place, and are otherwise on top of finances, you'll be fine. Paying rent is something I don't have automated, and sometimes it just feels.. scary to have to sign over that money to somebody else. But remember: it has to get done. Putting your signature on the check & a stamp on the envelope seem really big, but remember that they take only a few seconds -- minutes if you have to pop down to buy stamps at the convenience store or bank or USPS. And that if you don't do it, you'll lose your place. Other than that, keep your place clean-ish and don't torment your neighbors. If you're concerned for some unmentioned reason about things, just know your rights. Reading over a document like that can assuage fears you may have. Keep it bookmarked. (I googled for seattle tenants rights.)

You probably don't need to be reminded, but it's good for you to pause for just a few seconds now & then, just to think good thoughts about this space & where you are. Don't get too caught up in things, overwhelmed by what needs to or could be done. It can all be done step-by-step, as it needs to. If you do this before meals as a form of non-religious "grace", it's a nice ritual. You can also do it right when you first close your eyes in bed at night, and it can be comforting. When I was going through a rough patch a few years ago, a friend recommended that I think of 5 things I'm grateful for when I go to bed. These days, "my own space" would be one of them quite regularly. I lived with roommates for 8 years and it had its ups and downs. I've been on my own for 2 years and it's still kind of magical. Memail me if you want to talk about it.

Also, (again, you probably don't need to be reminded) but small stuff like "I get anxious signing my rent check" is probably fair game for your therapist to explore with you.

I'm sure the man himself had something else in mind but as I try to make my way on this Earth under a similar set of strictures and conditions to you, loq, this is a song that pops into my head more and more. No more foam rubber pads in the corner, no more sleeping on the streets, a general retreat from squalor because you and I deserve it, and if the fear's not gone at least the fire's keeping the wolves at bay.

damn that is a nice place

So glad to see you have a stable place and are beginning to heal. Good luck with the internal work you are doing; slogging through it all can feel daunting and unproductive a lot of the time, so hold on to your wins and don't berate yourself over your perceived setbacks. Here's hoping you breathe easier soon.

I'm actually a bit sheepish about how nice and photogenic the apartment is. It might help sway your envy a little if I point out they're having a regularly scheduled building-wide bedbug inspection w/ a trained dog on Monday. There's a 2 am drunken, roving shouty-fighty people thing going on in my alley for the last half hour or so and...

It has a lot of, err, charm like that - but for the price it's gorgeous and ridiculous and mine. It's pretty awesome. It's big enough to do yoga or make art, quiet enough to write in and all kinds of things.

loquacious, I'm so glad you've got yourself a gaff and things look like they're going to be stable for you. FWIW, I was just discussing with my sister how I miss the studios I lived in, from Providence to London, until I was 32. Studio living is great, and also (critically for me when I was trying to deal with depression) manageable.

Even when I slid and became overwhelmed by my environment, it wasn't so big a job that a friend and an afternoon couldn't make it better. More than once, being able to get that one part under control gave me confidence to get moving on other things that needed to be done.

However having a home can nurture your recovery, I hope that's the role it fills for you.

Loq, we don't know each other (though of course I know you as a MeFite Of Great Renown), but if it will be of any help at all, I currently have a real, honest-to-God job that I didn't believe existed, because the job description fits in with "Work from home! Make your own hours! Great pay!" crap you find for pyramid schemes and other cons. and it's great. It's an extremely busy company that needs transcriptionists and video-savvy folks. Just from working there for a few months, I've become friends with the higher-ups, and would be happy to recommend you. You could even figure out exactly how many hours to work in order to prevent you from losing aid, but put a little extra pocket at the same time.

Yay!!!! My favorite apartments to live in have been the ones with a lot of "charm" - this one looks awesome. Oh, what I wouldn't give to move back to the one with the gas leak in the house that was kind of falling apart and definitely *looked* haunted. The heat never worked, and the gas leak didn't get fixed for an appalling amount of time, but it was home and it was awesome.

(No seriously, I loved the hell out of that place and I'm really honestly kind of embarrassed about the fancy-pants-ness of my current place. Though it's across the street from a strip club, which detracts a bit from the general property value. The weekends are G-DAMNED LOUD.)

You don't know me and I don't know you, but I'm still so happy to see this! Not just a place of your own, but one with a nice view! and great storage! and cool floors! In the 4G sweet spot! Score!

Wonderful news. It's a great feeling to go walk around town all day and then arrive... home. Your own little sanctuary. Enjoy life, my friend.

Thanks again. Sorry if I've been keeping my head down but... I'm still really overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and terrified about not being graceful enough about it. I'm processing and doing a lot of "Holy shit. What... just happened?" type thinking still, but I'm settling in and getting on with it.

Seriously. It's massively empowering that this many people are rooting for me and have my back.

Can everyone that I want to thank please form an orderly line? Holy shit that's a long line. Dog pile, then?

There's a lot of good advice in this thread.

I don't have a bank account yet and probably won't for a while, but I did have to open a pre-paid debit card to get a number to turn on my internet. Which I've used to set up a paypal account. I think in a few months I qualify for a paypal account where I can use it like a pseudo bank account. I also finally joined the 21st century and made my very first internet purchase. I bought socks.

The closet is super awesome. I have a dresser in there now. My clothes aren't in a backpack or on the floor for the first time in a long time.

(Oh, and I passed the bedbug inspection. Yay. They're not supposed to be in here anyway 'cause this unit was vacant for 4+ months.)

You deserve this, you know. You inspire people.

In life, if we have to prop up a friend sometimes just to keep them around in order to inspire us, that's what we do. It's all very symbiotic like that. I'm sure you've done the same for people you want to keep in your life, you've just done it differently.

On the flip-side I'm a bit freaked out by the responsibility of having my name on a lease, on the utility bills and all that

I understand -- it's doing the the right thing though. The lack of address/credit history continued to haunt me long after I had stopped being homeless. In retrospect I could have made my subsequent life easier, however, if I had proactively put my name on bills rather than avoiding doing so.
