MeFi Fantasy Pick 'Em August 16, 2010 12:37 PM   Subscribe

MetaFilter Fantasy Football Pick 'Em at Yahoo. Let's do this.

For anyone who wants to play, I've set up a group on Yahoo.

Right now I have it set to pick against the spread, accept picks up to 5 minutes before each game (as opposed to 5 minutes before the 1st game of the week), and to drop the scores from 2 weeks.

Send me a message and I'll get back to you with the Group ID# and password.

I am ready for some footbaaaaall.

But why not post the group ID and set the email address in your profile to the password? Said email address is only visible to logged-in users.

I hope some NFL pontificators show up in this thread. I've yet to find a good source for football yakkin'. Pointers?

BTW: Have you seen the abysmal state of the Huffpo football page? Going there, you wouldn't know there was a sport to go along with all the off-field horse hooey.

Having in in my profile like that isn't a bad idea. League ID # is 20713. To find the password follow the Wordnik link in my profile. It's the heart icon right next to Facebook (or at least is next to Facebook when I look at it). That username is the password. MeMail is still acceptable is that's confusing at all.

Sometimes I feel that way about government when I look at the Huffington Post's political pages.

Last year I picked the Falcons in every game. It mostly worked too thanks to the magic of the spread.

Your heart doesn't seem to be working.

It's not a link to an actual working profile over there. It's just set up so that the username of that profile that doesn't exist is the password.

A wisdom-of-crowds approach will get you as far as, say, the top quarter of your league. But to get first place, you'll have to take some risks and make some counterintuitive choices.

The Yahoo - He hate me

"That league is not available. (Error #450)"

Anyone else getting this?

I had no problems registering, vapidave. Are you sure you're on the "Pick 'Em" page and not the regular Fantasy Football League page?

Woohoo! Thanks.

So, I signed up. Now do I just wait 'til September?

Technically you can make your picks now. I'm not going to until the preseason is over. 3 games is enough time for some major decision changing injuries.

There's no telling what'll happen to Eli Manning's face in the next 3 weeks.

Eli Manning Face Update: Still smirky. No change.

Hello folks. Thought you might be interested in this collection of articles breaking down how some of the most used plays and formations actually are supposed to work. Good for guys like me who hear "Cover 2" and go "Cover 2? WTF?"

If anyone has others, I'd like to know about them. Cheers.

Is it too late to get in on the action?
posted by Dr. Zira at 11:08 AM on September 8, 2010

No, go ahead and join up. I have it set to drop the lowest week or 2 (I can't remember off the top of my head) just in case people decide to join late and/or get messed up a time or two and can't make picks.

Also: We're right at the spread, and buddy misses a 32 yarder? Congressional investigation!!!

I'm puzzled. No option to pick a push, but some teams have gotten points for the NO/Minn game.
posted by Trochanter at 8:32 AM on September 11, 2010

I was wondering about that too--maybe they made their picks at a time when the spread was different? I don't know jack about point spreads.
posted by box at 11:28 AM on September 11, 2010

As far as I was able to figure, they go with the Associated Press spreads as of Thursday.
posted by Trochanter at 6:02 PM on September 11, 2010

They go with the final spread as the spread it has to beat.

When I looked nobody had points, although it says I'm in 5th. Yahoo's official thing is that if it's a push nobody gets credit for anything.

My first week picking with point spreads leads me to believe that next week I should ignore the spreads and just pick who I think will win. I'd be doing much better that way.

Sometimes when you're picking, you think you shouldn't pick against your beloved home team because of loyalty. And then sometimes they play so bad, you wonder why you have that loyalty. But then sometimes they seem like they might pull out a win, so you don't mind picking them even though they won't beat the spread. Then sometimes it looks like they're going to fuck it up anyway so you figure you might as well have gone against them. And sometimes the call changes and they win anyway.

And sometimes all that happens in about 4 minutes.

Go Bears!

(More like, "go Bears?" today)</small?

Why is there a big "x" next to my Chicago/Detroit pick? I picked Chicago!

Never mind...I thought they'd beat the spread.
