Bad Deletion August 19, 2010 6:32 AM   Subscribe

This post should not have been deleted.

The fact that the same effect was applied doesn't mean that the two have anything to do with one another. They're completely different songs. Just because results were reached by the same methodology, jessamyn would forbid a separate thread? Tell me: when will this be applied to research articles? Political analysis?

If the original thread had been about slowing songs down as a general proposition, that would be one thing. But it wasn't. It was about Justin friggin Bieber. Deleting this thread just means more people will miss it. The purpose of Metafilter is not to hide the best of the web.

I knew it would be deleted and also that someone would start a metatalk thread about it.

Honestly, there are about 10,000 'slowed down 8x' songs on the internet this week. We can't have a thread about all of them.
posted by empath at 6:33 AM on August 19, 2010 [18 favorites]

The same effect was applied as a response to the original, why shouldn't it be posted here the same way?

And the the original thread was too about slowing songs down.

Honestly, I agree, and it kind of seems like a reversal of the decision from this set of threads I pointed out last week.

But, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to these things, and you should just get over it like I did.

Then make a thread about the phenomenon, with many examples. This song and the Justin Bieber song have NOTHING in common other than the particular effect, which receives only mention in passing in the original thread.

Would you support deleting an AutoTuneTheNews thread if it came a day after a T-Pain thread?
posted by thesmophoron at 6:39 AM on August 19, 2010

Yes, yes it does. Either the post was about the process, which has already been covered, or the post is about the song, which just isn't FPP worthy at all.

No matter how you mix it, this post is not getting anywhere near the MeFi Hot 100 charts.

Frankly, I don't think it matter what the other post was about. This post isn't best of the web. It isn't even a good song. It's a process that isn't very creative and a 4 year old could pull off accidentally without much effort.

The song in the second post was slowed down as a direct response to the meme started by the Justin-friggin-Bieber slowdown. Granted, this sounds really great, but it still belongs in the same, active, still going, less than two days old thread, which most definitely has evolved into a discussion about the mechanics and effects of slowing music down.

I could understand the incensed tone if this was of some import, but it's a goofy musical meme.

There is an open thread about the "songs slowed super way down" phenomenon from two days ago where people are adding similar links. This is a link to such a song. A single link to a music file.

Tell me: when will this be applied to research articles? Political analysis?

When they get flagged as double posts because there's an open thread on the same topic if not the exact same thing? Otherwise not? Are you seriously asking this?

Perhaps you're seeing some of the results of the pushback from the "your favorite band sucks" back and forth when people were arguing that "hey I like this song" wasn't really enough, in their estimation, to make a post about and now people are flagging them? I'm not sure. All I know is that this particular post wasn't in the grey "let's leave it and see how the discussion evolves" range, it was in the "this is enough flags to delete it unless there's some overwhelming reason to keep it" There wasn't, so here we are.

It's another example of the same sound effect. Why should there be two separate conversations in different places about it? I would imagine the people who are interested in this would want to discuss and compare the differences, the technology, etc. all together. With two threads, a choice must be made about where to comment.

We all have the power to steer a conversation, so if the original thread is overwhelmingly about Justin Bieber, there is nothing that says the topic can't shift or change with the addition of your link or comment. This happens ALL the time in political threads. (Just look at any one of homunculus's excellent article contributions to just about any thread...they add dimension, alternate perspectives, additional examples, or fun little birdwalks to just about any topic. On their own, they'd get deleted, and rightly so.)

There are other reasons for the deletion, but I don't want to get into that. Somebody else will I'm sure.

One more thing though...when you make a 'bad deletion' callout, please keep in mind that you are publicly and loudly dismissing or disagreeing with not only the mods and their decisions, but the community members who have expressed their reasons for the deletion in the thread (double, thin post, etc.), and those who've flagged the post (which you can't know, but you can assume that they exist when there are posters commenting in thread toward that end). Let that be your guide to some extent to where you stand relative to others on the issue at hand. You may find it positively influences your course of action. Which can also prepare you, so that you don't find yourself unexpectedly fighting the riptide.

jessamyn, et al.: you are engaging in bad faith. there is no open thread about the phenomenon. period. there is an open thread about an example of the phenomenon, a post whose first two words are "justin" and "bieber" and whose first two tags are "justin" and "bieber"

Metafilter is supposed to be a community weblog devoted to sharing the best of the web. If that means anything, it means permitting the sharing of cool new things. But as a community, there are wide and varied tastes. Not everyone will read every thread. (Perhaps because your job entails your reading of nearly every thread, jessamyn, your viewpoint might be distorted.) For this reason, it's absolutely paramount that "evolving discussions" in comments - such evolution being completely invisible, by the way, on the front page - be permitted to preempt an FPP.

The first post was "about" Justin Bieber. The chronology and causation of how that lead to a generalized phenomenon is irrelevant to the point. What was particularized is now generalized, and the phenomenon as divorced from the example is a thing distinct in itself.

Deleting the FPP serves no purpose but to make certain people's RSS behavior a little lazier. Letting it stand allows people with no interest in Justin Bieber to be exposed to the phenomenon.

Admittedly, the new post wasn't generalized either. Would a generalized post, specifically about the phenomenon and not about any particular song, be permitted to stand? If so then I have no complaint.

No, we shouldn't. I think the Beiber post is thin as it is. It's a song played slower. Big whoo di freakin' do. The newer post is gone because it's the exact same damn thing done with a different song. Deal with it.

I wrote the first post. I wrote it reasonably quickly because a) it had suddenly started appearing in a load of different places and looked like it was about to go viral, so I figured MeFites would be interested and b) it's cool, in that it's a music processing turning something heavily manufactured and overproduced into something entirely different.

I didn't craft a link-heavy post because a) when I posted it, that was the only one and b) not every post has to have a load of additional links.

Trust me, I'm not what you'd call a Justin Bieber fan. I only heard about the kid when 4Chan tried to send him to North Korea. I posted it because it was a cool effect. This is another example of the same effect.

These broad ground rules and principles have been hashed out again and again (and again) here on Metatalk, over subjects considerably more emotionally heated than slowed down tween pop. I suggest you do a bit of reading and maybe go for a walk.

While I'm disagreeing violently with things, here's another one. If you must most viral videos (or in this case, audios), please do it a) after it is a confirmed viral (the CDC is helpful here) and b) with context a la Know Your Meme.

This is where it's starting to stick in my craw, thesmophoron. You haven't even come close to being able to say that they're engaging in bad faith. Even if you disagree with them, even if you think they're wrong on this count, what possible right do you have to (apparently) claim that they're being malicious? I can't help but feel as though there must be some reason why you're taking this so very personally. It's just a post. Given the choice between (a) accusing other people who are clearly trying to apply policies honestly and fairly (whether those policies are right or wrong) of malicious "bad faith" and (b) letting it go and walking away, I would hope that (b) would be obvious as the best course of action.

There are 33 comments in this thread already, including at least one from a mod, the vast majority of which discuss explicitly why this was an excellent deletion. The problem here is not lack of explanation or discussion of the "substance" of your post. The problem is that you're not listening.

While we're discussing personal attacks, telling a mod that they're acting in bad faith might be something you want to reconsider doing.

jessamyn, et al.: you are engaging in bad faith.

You very seriously need to take a walk. If you are saying that you know how the site works better than all the people who have contributed to the thread here, and those who flagged the post, then you have a misunderstanding both of how MetaTalk works and how the site in general works.

If you think it should work differently, this is the place to talk about that. That said, calling me some sort of bad faith actor because you don't like a deletion, a deletion that as i said above, wasn't even borderline, indicates to me that either you are having a larger problem than just htis deletion, or that you are having a bad day.

Put another way, there are some things that Team Mod does that are sort of judgement calls, things we do that may not be community supported because of our own vision for how the website should run. There are other things that we do that are clearly supported by community feedback where we feel that we are just implementing what the users tell us to do. This was a case of the latter. If you feel that that means that I am engaging in some sort of bad faith activity, then your quarrel is with the userbase and not with me.

jessamyn, et al.: you are engaging in bad faith. there is no open thread about the phenomenon.

Go read the actual thread you keep complaining about. There's a bunch of discussion of the general phenomenon, of the software used, of other music it could and has been applied to, of related techniques, etc. That it started with a link to the Justin Bieber thing is ancillary.

The new post is the result of someone somewhere doing literally two minutes work with a piece of free software. It's neat the way anything PaulStretched into ambient alteredness is neat, and I can assure you that I personally think that's pretty neat indeed, but it's just a random blip on that radar, and with a very very closely related thread still open from just the other day there's zero reason for a contextless "here's another song" post.

It was lazy and unnecessary and it got flagged to death and deleted. This is S.O.P. on Metafilter. At that, "oh, here's a neat thing" on WCityMike's part is at least a kind of understandable thing; your grandstanding crap here about how a routine deletion of a bad post is some kind of destructive violation of internet norms is far less so. I don't know why you're approaching it like this, but you're mostly coming off as a pushy jerk.

My comment about bad faith was not about the deletion, it was about your insistence that something was the case when (to me) it seemed very clearly not to be. I don't want to rehash that issue, just to clarify what criticism on my part was directed toward what.

>> You very seriously need to take a walk.

No. I do not. You, and others, very seriously need to disabuse yourselves of the illusion that you can divine people's emotional states over the Internet. You take issue with my use of the phrase "bad faith" and I accept that criticism. I promise you that it is not as revealing of my blood pressure as you would imagine.

I'll suggest that a more precise phrasing, and perhaps one less prone to inflammatory interpretation, would have been to say that I don't think you are making enough of an effort to consider with intellectual generosity the standpoint of those who disagree with you. I apologize for any suggestion of malice that may have been (reasonably) inferred from my original phrasing. I do not make, and never intended to make, an accusation of malice.

I would imagine if someone were to write a long post, now, a couple of days after the first one, collecting all of the various 800% meme songs and doing an analysis of Paulstretch, then yes, it probably would be deleted, unless it was truly remarkable in some way. If someone did a long and detailed post on this here particular meme six months from now, that'd probably stand.

I'm pretty fed up with posts about deletions.

That particular wahmbulance has done the rounds too often recently, IMHO. If we accept that the mods operate in good faith - and I appreicate the OP doesn't - then questioning every few days this or that post is tedious and unproductive in the long run. Mods are a privilege, not a hindrance.

In most cases, a simple note to the mod would deal with most of it. Worse still, the post by stealth, where a MeTa post ostensibly reverses the deletion by the back door is poor form.

You'd have to be threatening bodily harm to someone to get a comment deleted here.

Would a generalized post, specifically about the phenomenon and not about any particular song, be permitted to stand? If so then I have no complaint.

Right now, today, there is an open thread discussing the phenomenon. I'm sorry if it happened to start out being about Justin Bieber. I've said many times before that I'm not really interested in giving rulings on hypotheticals here. MetaFilter is not a court of law and how we implement the guidelines is not something that we can apply a fixed ruleset to. This is how it is, and is unlikely to change and you can decide how you feel about that and act accordingly.

I suggest that you address the substance of the post

You put a lot more time into this metatalk than you did into the deleted post, which has to be a big reason why it was deleted.

"It's hard to overstate my satisfaction ..." is just editorializing, I guess, on a slice of mystery meat. "I'm making a note here: huge ambient success." is more editorializing, I guess, about what is still a slice of mystery meat. I say I'm guessing because it's not obvious what any of this means yet. Is "I'm making a note here" a self-referential comment, as if I wrote "I'm writing a MetaTalk comment here" here?

Anyway, having read the text, I click the link to see if I can find out what this post is actually about and I discover that it's supposed to be another slowed down song by some band called Portal. Is it time to grab my best girl and dance cheek to cheek? No, because the music doesn't play. Maybe it's blocked at work. Or is it also very slow to open?

Be more informative. We should know what we're clicking before we click. In this case, you might have told people that it's another damned slowed-down song. Title, performer, anything else informative about the song or band or process. How can we slow down our own songs? How does it work? Why are their voices not low?

And still the post might have been deleted, because it's a one-song "I love this tune and effect!" post that closely follows a similar post. Maybe a big fat post about this silly fad for slow music would fly, but I guess you've been beaten to the punch.

If people say your post sucks, it doesn't mean that they think you suck. Learn from your failures. Try again some other time. Don't grumble too much or you'll be remembered as the fucker who got all shirty over a simple post deletion.

People are suggesting you take a walk because it's a better alternative to channeling your energy into perpetuating an argument. Think about it. You have choices about how to spend your time and energy. You (and me and everybody else) are choosing to be here, crafting responses and participating in this flow. But this flow isn't a positive, happy one. It's a negative, uncooperative one where many of us are expressing frustrations and less-than-fuzzy feelings. Generally, we're all butting heads in some way, and it is likely to escalate to the point where somebody will get angry or really upset. Many of us are willing to bet that that somebody will be you. We are seriously trying to help you out here. Nobody wants to win this fight more than you do, trust me.

On the other hand, walking is a completely neutral, if not positive, activity. You not only expend calories by putting one leg in front of the other, but you get your breathing, bloodflow (and therefore, brain activity) engaged in an elevated, rhythmic pattern. Thanks for the response jessamyn. I may try putting together something with a bit more substance if I get some downtime today.

Okay, I'm not sure if you are misreading me or not but since there is an already-open thread on both the JB song and the phenomenon, I would suggest not doing this today and maybe giving it some time for the post to cycle off the front page. Otherwise it's going to look really stunty, especially if posted by the person who opened this MeTa thread, which is in and of itself often an argument for not keeping it.

If the phenomenon is that interesting, a post can wait a few days until it's clearly not conflicting with an open active post. If people are already talking about what you want to talk about in an open post, go talk to them there.

Understood. Again, thanks.

I think the phenomenon, writ large - not just the particular "800%" meme, but slowing and speeding music generally and the strong emotional reaction people have to slow music - is extraordinarily interesting. I'd like to do a bit of hunting around the Internet to see what research exists on such things (is the emotional association cultural or does it hold across ethnic groups?). I think such a thing could make a good FPP.

A long time ago I was playing with AudioMulch. Very cool software only modular synthesis tool. I took a sample of Muhammed Ali saying "I am the greatest!" and stretched it out from three or four seconds to about five minutes long. I ran the output through a bunch of parallel effects path that fed back into each other.

It made a really great weird low bass rumbling sound. There was one part where an odd whistling harmonic merged with a very low growl. That bit would reliably make both cats bolt upright and flee the room in panic. This proved that time stretching, like backwards masking, is a conduit to demonic possession.

Right now, today, there is an open thread discussing the phenomenon.

Jess, not to stir the pot, but I want to revisit this MetaTalk thread in light of what's happening here. In both cases, a post about a phenomenon (one about to go viral, one pretty much established) was submitted within a few days of another post about the same phenomenon. In one case, the second post stood (and we had some fun in a MetaTalk thread about it); in this case, the second post was deleted (and some tempers started to simmer in MetaTalk).

What's the difference between the two sets of posts? Again, I like you mods and understand that the lines are fuzzy here, but am curious. Was it that cortex was on the clock when the second ASL post popped up and you were around when the second 8x slowdown post popped up?

I promise you that it is not as revealing of my blood pressure as you would imagine.

Like a jessamyn and iamkimiam have said, suggesting you take a walk is not necessarily a prediction about your bp. I don't care if your pulse is 40 bpm and weak, if you're being a jerk in metatalk over your own apparent aggressive misapprehension of routine site procedure it's probably a really good idea to go take a walk away from the computer just to get yourself out of that position long enough to maybe get some perspective on it. Take a nap instead if you want. Key thing is cut it out with the aggro; how you want to manage that and the state of your cardiovascular system at the time is entirely your business.

Would a generalized post, specifically about the phenomenon and not about any particular song, be permitted to stand? If so then I have no complaint.

It could be okay down the line a bit. I think it's too soon right now; there's a thread where talking about precisely that sort of thing would be totally welcome. If someone really wanted to try to tackle it substantially it'd be best to let the slowdown/PaulStretch meme cook a little more so that the post could pull from a richer collection of slowdowns/roundups/tools and a better footing re: any theoretical/practical discussions of the software, the techniques, etc. Looking at psychoacoustic phenomena or more general time stretching/compression theory and practice would be good too, yes.

Figuring out what specifically bears discussing that wasn't already discussed in the existing thread would be a big part of any poster's decision-making about whether and how to build that post as well. Sometimes there's just not all that much new that needs to be said.

I also started a thread over on Music Talk the other day specifically to discuss the software and technique. Folks wanting to chat more about it directly could head there, as well. Maybe I'll go mention it in the original thread.

But back from the specifics there, "well what if THIS post..." questions are always a lot stickier and more uncomfortable coming from someone railing about a deletion, especially a routine deletion, because it feels like the setup for some potentially bad followup post with an odor of "you gave me permission!" to it and/or further crappy behavior if somehow a related post that doesn't cut the mustard comes along and gets deleted as well. It's hard not to feel gunshy about going into the sort of discussion above when we don't know if someone's asking because they're idly curious or are more fishing for something to use for further grandstanding if there's any movement on the subject that they don't like.

You making a big crappy noise here this morning over the textbook deletion of a post just makes it hard to be optimistic on that front. I'm willing to try anyway, because I'd be totally happy to extend you the ceremonial high-five of audio manipulation nerdery, but you have to know that it's harder to do that when you show up looking like you want a fistfight in the first place.

Jess, not to stir the pot, but I want to revisit this MetaTalk thread in light of what's happening here.

Did you just make an identical comment in both MeTa threads?

What's the difference between the two sets of posts?

A few top of the head ideas

- four days versus two days
- a topic that is more covered here [pop music generally and music weirdness specifically] and one that is less covered here [ASL]
- not a lot of conversation [original ASL thread] vs a lot of conversation [Bieber thread]
- thing as example of phenomenon spawning thread about phenomenon versus thing as example pf phenomenon not spawning discussion about phenomenon and instead spawning another thread about thing

As cortex said in your MeTa thread "There's no real hard-and-fast rule we can lay out, it's pretty much always going to be case-by-case, but certainly stuff like this is less likely to present a problem than literal doubles or other stuff that falls into that list above." and this is pretty much how it shakes out. On the one hand, yeah I was around to pay attention, on the other hand as an absolute sort of thing, the thread from today got a bunch of flags quickly which is one of our "okay to delete" indicators. Not trying to fall back on the flag queue as our only justification, but it's definitely an indicator to us of how people are feeling.

moviehawk, my feeling is the situations aren't totally dissimilar but they aren't congruent either. I think this morning's post was more closely grouped to, and more specifically treading exactly the same ground as, the original thread compared with the two ASL posts, but in addition to that the kind of flagging we saw on the two posts was very different.

Some of this stuff is always going to be a bit fuzzy; that's pretty much what I had to say in the ASL thread. Case-by-case means we look carefully at each instance, but it also means that in a lot of this borderline territory outcomes are going to be more probabilistic than deterministic; what tends to shift based on the context and timing and reception of the post is the chances of it sticking around, not whether it's a 100% deleter or a 100% keeper.

So the second ASL post in that context was sort of borderline stuff. We ended up letting that one stand. This morning's post in context felt cleanly into delete territory from the get-go. It went.

moviehawk: “Was it that cortex was on the clock when the second ASL post popped up and you were around when the second 8x slowdown post popped up?”

Actually, that's sort of completely backwards. cortex was obviously 'on the clock' for both of these situations, in the sense that he is and has been an active participant in the first '8x slowdown' thread. In fact, while I have no idea what might happen between the mods, knowing them I'd be willing to bet that they might even have talked about it when the new slowdown thread was posted. In any case, I have a feeling they're involved in tandem more often than this comment seems to imply.

I'm pretty sure "retarded" is a not-okay thing to ever call anyone around here (or, indeed, anywhere), regardless of said anyone's mental state. That the word was allegedly used to describe someone who was allegedly "disturbed" (not that that is a particularly stellar descriptor itself, IMO) only makes it more unacceptable.

Turning a calculator upside is a commonly-recognized procedure for indicating a shift into the alphabetic register, is all. Some words work right-side-up thanks to rotational symmetry, but the calculator flip is an explicit paralinguistic prompt to examine the contents of the display in a new light.

Particularly if it's a solar powered calculator.

No, no biggie. Just wanted to make sure you didn't think that was like a workable standard approach or anything. Tab confusion gets us all sometimes.

My favorite part of this is that WCityMike (you know, the one who posted it over there) never showed up here.

Well, it's not a callout about his behavior or anything and as far as I can tell he had nothing to do with this post being made, so I'm not sure there's anything notable about him not showing up. He can if he wants to but having a post deleted for being meh is not really something that demands a response.

TomMelee: "I'm working on coding a wicked piece of wc3 compliant software that I will release as a worm on the interwebs, but will only affect metafilter readers. Basically, the software will scan for what you type, and if at any point you actually manage to bang out "retarded" as a word to describe some member of the site, it will realign all the atoms in your browser into a big Hake fish and slap you right in the face."

1) If it was smart enough to actually tell the difference between me calling this idea retarded (for example) and an honest discussion of the mentally ill (or even a meta-discussion about the word retarded), this would be a groundbreaking piece of AI work deserving of a Turing Award.

2) You mean w3c?

3) What do you mean by wc3/w3c compliant software? Do you mean it complies with one of their standard? Which one? Or all of them? Why does it matter?

4) A browser is a piece of software, so there aren't really any atoms that comprise it. Do you mean the atoms on the hard drive platter that store the program? Or the atoms in the memory that are storing the running copy and allocated memory? Because I'm betting that combined, those only add up to a handful of grams, if that much.

5) A slapped-with-a-fish threat? What is this, mIRC?

Agh, that's your suggestion? If you're going to complain about doing something slower, at least use A METHOD THAT'S ACTUALLY FASTER:

That's the URL of the player object, not the mp3. The URL of the mp3 is http://media.soundcloud.com/stream/WPraG2oVoEDh?stream_token=Qibri.

Note: if the link doesn't work for you then it's because of anti-hotlinking measures which means there's likely a unique stream_token value for each IP address. Instead of futzing around in the page source which does not have the URL, what you want to do is open up the Firebug Net panel (or Adblock panel) that shows all the URLs accessed by the page and look for the mp3 object there.

I respectfully disagree with Jessamyn, and think it's another bad call.

FWIW, you disagree with me as well, and a bunch of people who flagged your post for deletion. Please do not frame this as a mano-a-mano thing devoid of a larger community context.

I think when analyzing music, it's the end result and not the methodology by which the result was accomplished; to me, this is like writing off a FPP about a waltz because another waltz by a different composer also recently FPP'd. It's the end experience.

I think you are significantly trivializing the connection between your post this morning and thread two days ago in defense of what was a very weak post. Like I said earlier, I totally get "this is neat" as the impetus for a not-great post and it's not a big deal on that front, but this was pretty textbook stuff and you should have either made the reference to the Still Alive processing in the existing thread or made some sort of actual substantial post that justified revisiting the exact same phenomenon so soon after.
posted by cortex (staff) at 5:11 PM on August 19, 2010

You could add it to the original thread with "Here's Still Alive done with the exact same effect isn't it cool?" and it would not look out of place.

I also didn't open the Bieber thread (I don't read Gaga threads either) but caught the post with the deleted threads thing. While the deletion reason is cool and everything I think some comments here are being a uncharitable about the reason for posting this objection.

Reading the comments made by thesmophoron in the deleted thread it seemed obvious to me that he's just heard a piece of music that he's loved:

Wow. I love this. I wonder what happens when you do this to The Burning Bush from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack?
[...]
10:55 just brought tears to my eyes and gave me goosebumps. This is fantastic.

When that happens and you think it's going to be hidden in some Bieber shit, which to the poster might be a tragedy, it's easy to see how an emotional reaction to a deletion might happen. But as usual in the filter that is MeTa, he's given the most uncharitable reading ever, his phrasing is beanplated until he's a bad person and he's told that he's coming off as weird or aggressive or whatever. When people come here to complain, they're immediately stuck into some sort of parrallel universe where they're either attacking mods, weird because they don't post enough to discuss a particular subject more than one comment per meta or just not getting community rules.

I just don't get why MeTa has to be the place where Defenders of Truth and Justice Metafilter have to gather to lay the smackdown on people who disagree with them, even if that person is Totally Like Wrong OMg. I get that you like the forum and the mods but doing it without personal attacks would be cool, even if the simple act of me typing that proves I don't get MeTa culture and should be burned at the stake for some bizarre apostacy. When people disagree with a mod decision it isn't a full on anthrax attack and nobody needs to physically don anti chemical warfare suits to armchair psychoanalyse the perpetrator to death.

So for what it's worth I get where the OP is coming from and sympathise that a piece of music he wants to be shared will be hidden in another thread, although I disagree that a) it's a piece of music worth getting ripped to shreds for or b) that the deletion was in any way uncool.

So you're saying that most women aren't strong?

That is an absolutely bizarre sentence and only doesn't look that way because it is in a thread as mindblowingly unawesome as this one.

In the Violet Blue Boing Boing deletion thread Astro zombie pointed out the absurdity of the idea of MetaFilter mods deleting every single contribution by a MeFite, to which languagehat replied: "You don't remember Paphnuty, who at one time was responsible for half the posts and comments on MetaFilter? And that's how Paphnuty was born. And this, being MetaFilter, brought on a slew of comments, by cortex, languagehat again, Astro Zombie, cortex again, languagehat again, Paphnuty shows up (odds are it's cortex ;) ), CCBC points out the origin of the name (St. Paphnuty was a Greek 4th Century martyr), I comment, yhbc comments, treepour comments, Paphnuty again, nooneyouknow comments and spiderwire. That's the story of the Paphnuty injoke.

languagehat: Who's "she"?

My evil twin, the one with the goatee.

You could probably squeeze a pretty good doctoral thesis out of the psychological and linguistic background behind what's going on when we assume someone's gender based on their username. I know I've done it at least half a dozen times in the last year or so, and I haven't been able to discern the internal process that's involved when I subconsciously decide somebody's male or female.

Nope, though it's not an unreasonable guess.

I did ask if I was missing something, but to be fair, her profile says I can pick a gender for her, so I have!

Yeah, me too, but in this case it seems particularly odd because Kattullus is, well, a male name. It's transparently based on Catullus and it's got that male -us ending. Now, I can understand people being confused about thomas j wise.

That's true, but (while I impute nothing to cjorgensen's own ideas here) I was thinking that female names beginning with "Kat" – mostly derivatives of "Katherine" – seem to be very popular at the moment, at least in the US. And I have more and more female friends who go by "Kat."

To be fair to cjorgensen s/he's not the first person to make that mistake. These two threads had significant derails about my gender (the second an even greater derail about Marisa Stole the Precious Thing's gender). I'm used to it and don't mind but I've never quite figured out the whys and wherefores. I used to think it was because my first name, Kári, reads feminine to Anglophones, but it seems mostly to be people who never clicked through to my profile, and therefore wouldn't know my first name. Anyway, it's an interesting puzzle.

I got a memail from someone who said that until recently they'd thought I was female, but I can't imagine that that was based on my username.

Such a terrible pun...

Every once in a while I think about retiring it, but it's been on my profile longer than anything else besides my name, so I just can't bring myself to get rid of it.

This is a joke, right? I assumed you were female for a long time based on your username. I imagine even old Eliot might've done the same.

Wait, really? I think 92% of people glance at my name and think it's 'shakespeare' or 'shakespearean'. Another 7% think it's a purposeful misspelling of same. Pretty much no one seems to get the Eliot thing. And even then I didn't know it read as female. INTERESTING

Someone compile that linguistics report!

Your username is "shakespearian" with "her" stuck in the middle of it. That's all. In fact, the more I see it, and the more I try to pronounce it, the more the "her" jumps out at me.

I also know that when I first went to your blog, I said to myself: "wow, she isn't bad looking, either."

Actually, it's "shakespearian" with the "a" substituted for a "he".

The biggest problem is that a=a, not "he".

Burhanistan: “I usually don't bother trying to map gender to username unless a user is saying something specifically gender related. Otherwise, everyone is just part of the brainblob.”

Well, that's probably the best way to go about it. But I try to do that – and constantly fail. It's really hard for me not to assume gender when I'm talking to human beings, and my mind just does these funny subconscious things to make that happen. I mean, honestly it's not as though I consciously said "well, look – it says 'her' right in the middle of that username, so clearly that person must be female!" My brain just sort of did that automatically, and I had to stop and think about why.

I did click into Kattullus's profile before assigning a gender. Kári reads like Carrie to me, so I went with female.

What's funny to me in hindsight is that Kattullus sounds like a made up name like most of those on this site. I didn't assign a gender at all based on that. I also didn't spend a lot of time thinking about it. If any offense was taken (doesn't sound like there was) then I apologize.

grep -i bieber Epic-Pop.html | wc -l

FOR FUCKS SAKE.

grep -ic bieber Epic-Pop.html

You're wasting a process, if you insist on doing that, you might as well break out a (BING!) Useless Use of Cat.

cat Epic-Pop.html | grep -i bieber | wc -l

Never grep into a wc -l, you learn nothing, and you lose badly if you need to grep more than one file. (grep -ic bieber Epic-Pop*.html)
posted by eriko at 10:42 PM on August 21, 2010

eriko, did you not read my actual tests? "YOU'RE WASTING A PROCESS" only matters if you are on a seriously resource-limited machine.

Also, if you want a total count of multiple files, grepping into wc -l is the right way to do it. grep -ic will only give you counts for each file individually. So "never" is a bad word.
posted by Plutor at 8:11 AM on August 22, 2010

Hmmm, I see a real speedup by not using cat uselessly on my Cygwin system. It's not resource-limited, so is therefore a bit faster than your tests, but Cygwin makes new processes expensive:
$ time for N in `seq 1 100`; do cat words | grep -ic stupid &>/dev/null; done

real 0m4.454s
user 0m7.674s
sys 0m4.002s

$ time for N in `seq 1 100`; do <>/dev/null; done

real 0m2.859s
user 0m4.324s
sys 0m1.341s

$ time for N in `seq 1 100`; do grep -ic stupid words &>/dev/null; done

real 0m2.448s
user 0m3.877s
sys 0m1.217s
Anyway, I favor avoiding useless uses of cat not because of any speedup but because I think it decreases programming clarity.
posted by grouse at 9:37 AM on August 22, 2010

I favor the cat prefix for exactly the same reason. I find

cat somefile | awk '/blah/ {something ridiculously ugly}' | etc

much more parseable than

awk '/blah/ {something ridiculously ugly}' somefile | etc

But, like most readability holy wars, it's all subjective in the end.

(It's also easier to incrementally test while writing, since you can just substitute "head" for "cat".)
