Who axed insanely minor feature #4638-B3 from the RSS feed? August 26, 2010 12:19 PM Subscribe
Where did the ‘X number of posts’ thingumijigwhatsit that used to be on the RSS feed disappear to?
This is possibly the tiniest pony request ever — literally, think the approximate size of a unicorn reflected in a human's tear, but a bit smaller — but anyhoo. When I used to browse the AskMe RSS feed in Google Reader, a strip that said ‘X many comments’ would appear underneath the post blurb. This was a handy way for me to gauge whether an AskMe I was curious about had gotten off the ground conversation-wise, and now that it's gone my habit of starring interesting threads is a little less… efficient. If it's gone for a reason, I shall shed a unicorn tear for it; if it was never there in the first place, I shall have to question why I keep seeing unicorns.
(But seriously, I'm sure it was there, so: where did it gooo?)

Just as a data point, it's there in MeTa/MeFi/Projects in my Google Reader, but not AskMe.

The comment count is a nice feature provided by our feed host Feedburner. We have everything enabled to make it happen but they don't always have it in the feed for whatever reason. Looks like they have it disabled right now for some reason, but we have everything they need to make it work.

Yeah, weird that it works for some MeFeeds and not others. (Shows in MeTa for me now, for instance)

I notice this too. It's just a generally pretty flaky feature on FB's side. You'll note that it is often incorrect when it does appear. I also believe that once you view it, it never updates, but that could be a misapprehension on my end.

Looks like there was a validation error in the feed that could have been messing up the comment counts. Fixed it up and it looks like they're back.
