Help me find the post I'm thinking of, or the song that was featured in it. October 13, 2010 9:50 AM   Subscribe

I've been hunting without success for a post about a collector of old "ethnic" records. There's one song in particular that I'd love to hear again...

The recording -- I think it was supposed to be the guy's favorite, or the recording that had gotten him started collecting, or something like that -- was of an intense, mournful sounding singer from the early 20th century. I'm pretty sure she was Greek, or at least from the Eastern Mediterranean somewhere. (It was definitely not traditional Balkan singing, though I know we've had some good posts on that recently.)

Sound familiar?

Sorry, the post was by ersatzkat. Omiewise commented in the thread with the link to Excavated Shellac.

For the record: When record lover Ian Nagoski heard a 90-year-old song by a Greek immigrant, he found his life's calling -- this is a Washington Post article that was linked to by Matafilter sometime recently, and the song it refers to definitely has that qualtiy.

That's a great resource. I missed it the first time around, so thanks for asking the question nebulawindphone.
