thread broke recent activity lol November 5, 2010 2:24 PM   Subscribe

This thread breaks my recent activity. Within the (I assume) div tag for that thread, it lists a loop of all threads I have participated in. I'd post a screenshot, but Steve Jobs didn't see fit to put a print screen key on the macbook.

Control-Command-Shift 3 will write a screenshot to the clipboard.

Are you sure it's not just cog_nate's comment? He strung a couple of recent thread titles into some kind of Burma Shave poem (with waaay too much space in between).

You can use Grab, a ultility that comes with the macbook to get a screencapture. I'd suggest that because I'm not really sure what you're talking about and I dont see any weird code in that thread at first glance.

use "grab" to get a screen shot...it's in your application/ utility folder

And yeah, I'm not seeing anything with the thread in RA after a test comment.

Print it to a pdf, then email it to the mods.

I can't find anything unusual either. Do you have any MeFi Greasemonkey scripts or Stylish styles installed. Sometimes those can break the layout in unusual ways.

I don't seen anything wrong with the thread except that it's a double.

Command-Shift-3 automatically saves the screenshot to a .PNG on your desktop.
Command-Shift-4 lets you draw a little box to limit the size of the screenshot, then save a PNG.
Command-Shift-4, then pressing space, will let you select a window to take a shot of, then save a PNG.

Control-Command-Shift 3 will write a screenshot to the clipboard.

ctrl-cmd-shift-4 will give you a select area tool.

ctrl-cmd-shift-4-space will give you a thingy whereby you can click on a program's window, and only that will be printed. It's pretty awesome.

Since this thread has turned into a screenshots advice thread, I'll mention that I'm a huge fan of Pearl Crescent Page Saver. It creates images of web pages. You can get one graphic of an entire page, so you don't need to scroll through one screen's worth at a time, and the final result is a lot cleaner-looking than anything I've been able to produce with Print Screen.

I usually just put the monitor "face down" on the copier-printer-scanner and make a copy. If needed, I can also scan the said copy and e-mail the resulting pdf file. For some (unfathomable to me) reason, directly scanning the monitor doesn't result in a good quality image.
posted by vidur at 4:56 PM on November 5, 2010 [1 favorite]

I turn the monitor off, then shade it lightly with a #2 pencil to see what was written on there.

I go through a lot of monitors.

Canadian authorities have detained a young dog who was wearing a silicone head and neck mask making him appear to be a scan-worthy cat.

I dunno, dogs can do a lot of things, but they are still incredibly inept at disguise.

Happily, we're using this weird HTML extension that allows you to "hyperlink" to things hosted elsewhere, so all is not lost.

I hear that HTML5 will allow you to link to things at a precise geographic location.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 7:37 AM on November 6, 2010

Previously it was kind of muddy, yeah. You'd be all like "I'm linking to a thing at the Pizza Hut", and Apache would go "What?" and you'd say "wait no I'm linking to a thing at the Taco Bell" and Apache would be all "What?!" and it really just went downhill from there.

Pizza Hut is not a precise geographic location, it's more of a state of mind.

Well, almost. While one's presence inside Pizza Hut is both a cause and a result of a particular state of mind -- i.e. ennui -- the Pizza Hut itself is not equivalent to said state of mind per se.

Funnily enough, there existed in the latter half of the fifteenth century a type of hat called an ennui which bore the distinctive shape and coloring of a Pizza Hut roof. The effect of the hat upon its wearer would more accurately be described as malaise, but that name had previously been claimed by a style of short-shorts shaped like a Taco Bell.
