Amina blog a hoax June 13, 2011 5:15 AM   Subscribe

Since the Amina post is closed, is this where we would post that it's been confirmed a hoax? Seems a pretty important point to have in the record here.

MeFi search for Amina reveals no follow up posts.

Huh...what the? I must have borked the search cuz the one that came up was closed to comments. SORRY!

I still think it needs a new post. "Popular blogger revealed to be a hoax" is a different story than "blogger is in danger", and to get to the discussion of the hoax I need to wade through a hundred comments expressing concern about somebody I now know to be fake.

the shithead is wearing a Che t-shirt. It does not need another post.

maybe, maybe that discussion could take place here.
note, alot of people have phones and what not to view the filter, deal with it.

The open thread linked to by bjrn is about how the blogger might be fake (first sentence of the More Inside).

Is it OK to self link in MetaTalk? I was interviewed by the BBC this morning on "World Have Your Say: The Amina Hoax." I'm introduced at 19:12... I guess I sound okay, even though I say "yeah, you know" way too much.

Anyway, it was a great experience. I was the token angry American throwing out great phrases like "an almost sociopathic disregard for the feelings of others" and "Internet Munchausen by proxy." I would have called the guy an assclown if I could have gotten away with it, but I kept my language PG. But it was particularly awesome hearing Jelena Lecic at the other end of the line, saying how she WILL take legal action. I had to restrain myself from cheering.

I feel like the open thread is a fine place for the discussion; it was very clearly moving in that direction from an explicitly skeptical start. If at some point a bit down the road it makes sense to do a substantial retrospective post looking at what all went down when the dust settles, that's fine, but for now it seems kind of premature to me.

And quonsar, cut it the fuck out with the HA HA HERE'S AN UNLABELED PICTURE OF A FAT NAKED GUY thing. Nixing it the first time should have been a pretty clear hint.

(first sentence of the More Inside)

Exactly. The part of the post that appears on the front page tells the story of the kidnapping straight, relying on a reader to click inside to find out that the post is really about how the blogger might not exist.

I can't be the only MeFite who saw the thread, assumed it was about the kidnapping, and (having read AstroZombie's MetaTalk on the issue) didn't click through. The more straightforward deleted thread was the first I heard about it being a hoax.

What's your problem, tedious little man? I'm not personally offended by the fake-out like some in the open thread, but the fraud could have serious repercussions for legit Syrian activists. Your LOLSuckers crowing ("You go, Amina, you did much more good that bad.") makes you look like a bigger, pettier and more myopic fool than the most breathless hyperbole-spewing outrager there.

"Blogger might be fake" is a different story than "Blogger has come clean and revealed his true identity."

That was no "HA HA HERE'S AN UNLABELED PICTURE OF A FAT NAKED GUY". That was me calling Amina a fake. As demonstrated quite clearly by the link text. Twice. Dunce.

No, trust me, I got it. The problem is not you calling Amina a fake. The problem is you wrapping that up in some stunty quonsar-brand shock image bullshit. Twice. Cut it the fuck out.

STUNTY CORTEX-BRAND SCHLOCK BULLSHIT SONG

Things were going great, oh man
They were genuinely going fine
I was all that I ever wanted to be
A Syrian lesbian online
How did it come to this, I wanna know
Not by any intended design
All I ever wanted to be
Was a Syrian lesbian online

No, he's wearing a Che wearing a Bart Simpson t-shirt t-shirt. It actually seems fairly appropriate to the occasion.

I'd like to apologize, that was really hoagey.

I am overfilled with compasssion for this apology — you po', po' boy. (So why don't we just baguette and move on.)

I'll tell you how I ended up with Pearls. It was the night of the Enchantment Under the Sea dance. I had seen Pearls in my homeroom for years, of course, but I was afraid to talk to her. Too pretty, I thought ...

Why do people believe stuff like this on the internet? Without corroboration?

My 20 some years on the internet has taught me two main things above all else:

1. Many people are dicks
2. Many, if not most, people are incapable of critical thinking.

It's OK to self-link in the comments on any of the subsites, as long as it's on topic (and meets the other usual guidelines for that subsite). Disclosing that it's a self-link, as you did, is good form too. That comment would be fine in the thread on the blue. It's only self-linking in posts that is forbidden.

hippybear: Dammit. Why did such an asshole also have to be such a cute squinty-eyed beardy-face. I'd totally tap that if he wasn't pretending to be a middle eastern lesbian.

WTF does how much you want to fuck someone have to do with anything?

Ok, I feel better!

Hey hippybear, I've noticed you've taken to wearing your cock on your sleeve. You should probably tone it down, don't you think?

All of these guys have shorts or loincloths or similar on. It's just that when they are really fat the amount of skin on display makes you initially think that they are naked. Next time there is a pic of a fat guy let's not jump to conclusions m'kay?

This may be a situation where my intended-to-be-artful framing of the post for drama may have made it more difficult to find when confirmation of the hoax showed up. It is pretty clear, I think, that it looks hoaxy although I did hedge slightly in my first comment there. I definitely wasn't trying to bury the lede, though.
