Thank you, all! July 6, 2011 8:40 AM   Subscribe

After the last round of holiday crapfests, I'd like to take a moment to thank mathowie, cortex, jessamyn, and restless_nomad (and, if it's still relevant, vacapinta -- for some reason I remember reading that vacapinta is not modding anymore...?) as well as pb for all the wonderful work they do keeping this place running.

Metafilter has filled so many hours of time for me (too many, really; I had best get back to work!) with interesting corners of the web and fascinating discussion. That's due in no small part to the community curators that keep this place running smooth-ish-ly despite a userbase that could give a herd of cats a run for its money in terms of steering. It's been a rocky weekend, and despite that you're all being civil, gracious, and hardworking. Kudos!

I had like four of those Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy beers last night. They're pretty good. I bet there's like a little bit left in the bottle of those, and if I poured them all together into one bottle you might get a sip out of it - so yeah, OK, you guys can have that sip - but I'm not doing any work for it - I'll give you the four bottles and you can do what you will.

I've always read Cortex's posts as Thurston Howell III. Or maybe it's that crazy prospector guy The Brady Bunch ran into on their way to the Grand Canyon, I dunno.

Wait, I know, it's the guy in It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World who owned the plane and asked Buddy Hackett to go make them a couple of old fashioneds.

I so agree that the mods here have their stuff together.

I so don't agree that what happened July 4th was a crapfest. It was a very spirited discussion of woman's issues that personally gave me a whole lot to think on several levels. Sure, some people crapped things up - some people just do that everywhere. Comes with the territory. One can have a site where such very spirited discussion takes place from time to time or one can have a site where you hear crickets. I opt for the former.

I so don't agree that what happened July 4th was a crapfest.

With respect, it was a crapfest. Tons of people behaved like jerks and treated people in ways that required mod intervention, generated a ton of flags and email, and made a lot of people feel lousy way outside of the normal range for spirited discussion here.

It's great if there was some good that came out of it as well, but there's a giant chasm between those threads and Crickets-MeFi where we usually like to see things happening.

posted by The Whelk at 11:47 AM on July 6, 2011

Yeah, to elaborate a little, the thing is that it's not a binary thing where it's either crapfest OR something with value. A thread can be one or both or neither, they're largely independent vectors in terms of a thread's overall velocity. But the crapfest part is unavoidably a determining factor in the kind of stress and work involved; crapfest+value isn't not a crapfest, and value-without-crapfest is very much the ideal and something that actually happens fairly regularly.
