Lets talk about sex. July 25, 2011 4:27 PM   Subscribe

Proposed Ask category: Sex.

I'm just noticing that there's no actual "sex" category for Ask. This seems like an oversight. It could be appended to "Health and Fitness" but that doesn't really make sense outside of, say, a newspaper stuck in outdated social conventions.

And questions about sex from vanilla to kinky, or pertaining to GLBT issues don't always entirely fit in health or human relations. Not all sexual activity involves relationships, or is a health related issue.

It isn't "human relationships," it's "human relations." Seems like it pretty well covers any and all non-animal husbandry.

There's also not a separate category for Books. Not being facetious, I think that would be very cool.

Yeah, this would be useful.

Even if sex doesn't involve big-r Relationships, doesn't it always involve relations? Hence the euphemism "sexual relations?"

Human relations category with the sex tag will not only work fine but it's what people have been using so far. We really don't want to add categories if at all possible and this one pretty much fits into an existing category.

Are you having relations if you're masturbating? Is masturbation not sex?

Sexuality isn't always about actual sex, either. Sex and sexuality could encompass everything from sexual identity to gender identity.

And sometimes the discussion about sex isn't about sex at all, as in the case of people who are asexual.

Seems to me like the larger topic of "human sexuality" isn't fully contained in health or fitness, or relations.

Can you point to instances of where this had been so or the lack of a sex category has been a problem?

still a human activity.
perhaps your thinking a new catagory might make search easier or help with a more precise index of the various tags related human sexuality.

But this is true for plenty of other things, as well. There's a choice between a small controlled vocabulary of categories or broad but shallow categories; Mefi's gone for the former with the use of tags (and various tag-searching/-filtering tools) to help add a lot of flexibility back in after the fact.

Ultimately, your question is your question and lots of people are going to find it by reading the freeform words you type into the post text box. Categories are a broad guide but hardly sufficient and adding one or two categories isn't going to change that; tags help, searching helps.

Look, MeFi wants to be free to have sex in whatever category it wants. Stop judging it, you prudey mcprude.

Fair enough. I was just surprised to finally notice that there isn't a specific "sexuality" category.

It's just another way to relate to yourself.

The problem with introducing this category would be that everyone would use it as their bookmark for Askme and all those questions about yoga for cats or the best place to buy a replacement splunge sprocket for a 1986 'SpeedMow 2000" lawn mower in Scabies, Ohio would go unanswered for weeks.

The way I do it, it falls under "Grab Bag".

No. Very few questions are actually just about sex, although many involve it.

Maybe make it extend to the front page, so you can choose not to see either catagory?

...a newspaper stuck in outdated social conventions.

I had a newspaper stuck there once. It was really uncomfortable, and the giggling of the Emergency Room nurses didn't help much, either.

They used tongs to remove it, too. Very undignified.

Once you have a "sexuality" category, then you'll have to start having a separate six-page ad section at the back just for strip clubs and veiled hooker ads. And lots of guys putting in personal ads for things most people really don't do.

And then everyone will be embarassed to read it on the subway, because that ad section will be on the back, and everyone will think they're just reading some smutty rag.

So yeah; good call.

Didn't they specifically invent the Kindle and ebooks and smartphones so you could read smutty Literotica slashfic on the subway? I mean we all really know what drives technological innovation forward, right?
