Apologies, MeFi. October 25, 2011 7:44 PM   Subscribe

Lazy single-link post, plus calling you stupid. Apologies.

My post was just deleted; didn't seem to go over very well - in fact, it seemed to bring out some anger.

For that, I apologize.

Whenever I take my time with a post and really consider how Metafilter is responding to certain topics - do my homework, as they say - the post is received well enough. The two or three times that I've done a post coming from "oh, cool I just found this, let's copy paste it and show Metafilter!", the posts have been deleted or not well received. This can't be a coincidence!

I think that may be the case here, but your two earlier deleted posts were simply double posts (you might have caught them if you did some research, maybe not), so it might have some merit but might also be a coincidence.

(but really. Do people randomly subtract numbers from a big number so that they can get 1% of the US population? At some point do you think maybe your reasoning is fundamentally flawed? Why not just call it fiction and choose whatever numbers you want?)

Hey, fantodstic, I too am a fan of Greg Nog, but mostly his comments. I became aware of his comics via a non-MeFite's friend's blog post about his time in Olive World. I thought to myself, "is this the same Greg Nog?" And it turned out to be, "yes," and then I thought, "well, maybe he is THE Greg Nog," eh? But now I question myself: is that strange? Particularly because I cannot say "hey, Greg Nog, I am a fan," to his internet face but must piggy back on some Meta thread.

How could anyone resist the comedy gold of swooping down, picking up a triceratops, and dropping it on the carefully constructed sand castle of a Tyrannosaurus rex? I'm sure that was just the beginning, too.

Telfer was wrong about the stegosaurus being dumb and having an "ass brain" though. First, brain mass =/= intelligence. Also, no one actually knows why they have that cavity in their pelvis, but there've been speculations it's related to a similar mystery gland in the lower abdominal region of birds.

OK I realize I'm a little touchy on the subject of stegosauri, but c'mon. There's no need to belittle the dude for having a walnut-sized brain. And what's up with that comparison, anyway? I've been hearing it since I was a kid. You don't hear "man has a brain the size of a grapefruit", do you? The vegetable comparison automatically makes your think "stupid". It's insidious.

Yeah, Utahraptors seem like a better mount than Velociraptors, though riding carnivores in general seems like a bad idea. I'd go for a nimble, bright herbivore. If I remember my dinosaurology, the Pachycephalosauria seem to have been a fairly smart bunch of dinos. As for weapon, I'd go for the Type 44 Cavalry Rifle.

Seriously, I have not given this any thought at all before now, but this all clicked immediately into place when I started to think about it, which makes me think that subconsciously I've been preparing for dino-mounted combat for a looooong time.

I too am a fan of the bolt action rifle but I imagine reloading atop a moving angry giant lizard would be suboptimal. Also reusable ammo like arrows seems better in a dinosaur combat situation and oh god I have put too much thought into this as well.

You don't ride a dino mount, you ride a well-trained warmammal and keep a trained dino who can tank for you. Sheesh.

That's just wrong, dude. That's so wrong.

when i was a small child, i had an imaginary dinosaur called a spikeosaurus. he was sort of like a stegosaurus, but with spikes EVERYWHERE - except a tiny little spot on his back just for me. if anyone else tried to sit on him, they'd be impaled by spikes. he was the dinosaur that took me off to dreamland. some nights i'd find him and he'd be covered in blood and i'd pet him and say, "that's a good spikeosaurus!" when i'd hit growth spurts his spikes would change and once again create a space for me. of all my imaginary creatures/friends, he was my very favorite.

my imaginary dino friend was a diplodocus named johan who very much enjoyed eating creamed spinach, which was extremely convenient as I found it utterly loathsome. he was also a staunch defender against the evil batman and robin who lived at the foot of my bed lying in wait for the day that my sheets would be untucked so they could stab me in the toes.

i was maybe kind of a weird kid.

I was always a big ankylosaurus fan, but they'd be bad for riding.
posted by klangklangston at 12:33 PM on October 26, 2011

It depends on what they are riding on. An ankylosaurus riding a diplodocus - now that's badass.

Not at all. Every child needs protection from that deeply troubled rich guy and his toadie sidekick, and if anyone can think of a better defense than a spikeosaurus, well, I'd looove to hear it.

I wish my name was Randy.

Back in university (1983, this was) when I first met a guy who shares my given name, for some reason I thought his first name was Randy.

Some some reason, he also though my first name was Randy.

We called each other Randy for a couple of years -- both thinking it was some kind of quirky nickname thing -- before either of us realized that neither of us were actually named Randy, and in fact shared a different given name.

Nearly 20 years later, we still call each other Randy.

The Owl and the Pussy-Cat went to sea
In a beautiful pea-green boat:
They took some honey, and plenty of money
Wrapped up in a five-pound note.
The Owl looked up to the stars above,
And sang to a small guitar,
"O lovely Pussy, O Pussy, my love,
What a beautiful Pussy you are,
You are,
You are!
What a beautiful Pussy you are!"
posted by growabrain at 2:32 AM on October 27, 2011

I heard that poem the first time in kindergarten and was confused because our cats were cat or sometimes a kitty. So I went home very annoyed and yelled at my mom, "Why didn't you tell me we had pussies?!"

To this day, remembering her face at that moment cracks me up.

For my work halloween party I dressed as the profane offspring of Pebbles and Bam forty-four years later. I have no photos (well, there's one on the work intranet but we won't speak of that) but basically it consisted of a lovely long patchwork green dinosaur tail protruding from under my usual outfit of t-shirt with long, unbuttoned shirt over the top and jeans, and my faded red and frizzy hair pulled up on top of my head with a bone-shaped clip fastened at the front.

I won a $20 Coles gift voucher! Take that, sexy pterodactyl!
