My milkshake brings all the boys etc. December 30, 2011 6:56 PM   Subscribe

Two of the top 20 posts that Mlkshk saw this year are Metafilter related.

Personally, I was disappointed not to see these ones make the cut. Previously.

Err, top 20. Dammit, I previewed and everything.

Top 20, rather, but, yeah, Haughey's mlkshk is better than yours for most values of you.

You could have just said it was better than most, you didn't have to make it personal...sniff.

I'm always surprised at how many people like to look at the cat pictures I post on mlkshk.

i've tried to guess which of my mlkshk uploads will be popular. i've basically been wrong every single time. i don't really know what people like of what i post, so i just keep posting things i like.

Also, why does mathowie have a cast? And why is he eating a magazine?

Nothing to do with the website, but the other day mr. desjardins mentioned he wanted a milkshake. I smirked and said "to bring all the boys to the yard?" He had NO Idea what I was talking about. It was very awkward.

Trying to holler at her

One of my coworkers and I have a long-talked-about plan to play Milkshake over the intercom at work. We'll probably never do it, and everyone would probably have NO IDEA what was going on, but it still cracks us up.

Uh, in more relevant news, here's to mathowie's Mlkshk!
posted by grapesaresour at 8:28 PM on December 30, 2011

When I worked at a movie theater, during a particularly slow winter matinee, the guy working the ticket counter picked up the phone, hit intercom, and tapped on the mouthpiece, for like a minute... and then began, "In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit..."

He actually got tips as well as applause by the handful of customers at the nearby concession stand.

I used to up the ante in jokingly antagonistic back-and-forths with my friends by singing "Milkshake" but substituting the title word with "woodshake."

TL;DR: this is pretty neat.

I'm a n00b and the webz are moving too fast for this tired ol body to catch up - what's the difference between Mlkshk and Tumblr or twitpic type of capture and share?
posted by infini at 10:45 AM on December 31, 2011

MLKSHK is pretty much just for sharing images and videos. It has a few friend functionalities and very very few settings. It creates simple URLs for your images, you can link directly to an image, doesn't allow much in the way of tagging/sorting, though people can curate their own "shakes" that can be stuff they've uploaded or things they've "saved" from things other members have uploaded [the Tumblr version of reblogging].

While some people make little blog-like things out of their shakes, they seem to mostly be for meme-like images and people who collect images on certain topics. There's a pretty basic iphone app you can use to upload pictures there. I don't know anything about Twitpic at all, it's never seemed like a community to em. The big thing for me with MLKSHK is that the people who I like to interact with are there, at least a big chunk of them, so it's a fun place to check in on a few times a day. I check out the Popular images once a day and usually find something I like there. Plus it's created by MeFi's own and that sort of thing always makes me happy.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 11:03 AM on December 31, 2011 [1 favorite]

ah, thank you. I will try it out then.

twitpic is used by frequent tweeters to take pics and upload them to twitter (or at least that's how it started) there's no community there that I know of, its more of an accessory

that's why I wasn't sure what mlkshk was
posted by infini at 11:23 AM on December 31, 2011

I fell into mlkshk because Tumblr seemed like too much stuff - too many choices for what I wanted to do, which was basically post pictures of cats - and I am terrible, terrible twitterer (apologies to mefites who follow me expecting me to tweet things, because I almost never do), so twitpic seemed wrong, given that I barely tweet.
posted by rtha at 11:38 AM on December 31, 2011

Oh, and I hit post too soon - also what jessamyn said about there being people on mlkshk I like who post things I like.

Ok, I'm on as infini (duh) how do I find and follow people? or is it just Incoming?
posted by infini at 11:49 AM on December 31, 2011

er, forgive me if I'm doing something wrong here... but I really liked the thread where everyone shared their tumblrs and it got me started there - maybe something like that here for mlkshk?
posted by infini at 11:50 AM on December 31, 2011

You can go to the social explorer and see who has them, or find a few people and see who they are following and who are following them.

I should warn folks that I will follow my tumblr method which worked extremely well - follow every single one of you and discover a whole new world and way of looking at things. (in case you start to wonder why infini is following everyone and is it spam or just an ape on an iPad)

The lines this paraphrases always bothered me. It's tautological, dammit! You just defined a scrub as a guy that can't get no love from you! Of course she then don't want no scrubs!

Looking at MLKSHK is a super-peaceful end-of-day ritual for me. Part of what makes the experience is the crowd, but part of it is also that there's very few words to draw ire or inspire conflict.
posted by ignignokt at 4:46 PM on January 1, 2012 [3 favorites]

i agree that mlkshk is a combination of like minded folks, ease of use, lack of words, sleekness/cuteness of design, and that undefinable quality that is satisfying for 5 minutes or 5 hours of clicking.

this is me.

MLKSHK has convinced me that mefites would be hilarious if allowed the IMG tag.

I am always subbes.
posted by subbes at 12:30 AM on January 2, 2012

Indeed subbes, mlkshake provides something that we had at metafilter back when we did have the img tag. I used to find img threads at mefi hilarious. So I'm very glad to have something with that atmosphere again.

I am unable to articulate why I've dived in with an enthusiasm that did not occur with my personal Tumblr. The work tumblr is easier since it captures news articles online better - mlkshk's grab and post function needs more work and it really screws up my Google settings upto and including logging me out of gmail for some odd reason but its giving me something I'd originally sought from flickr a long time ago - Where to share my crapload of images?

This is probably something to take up with them over on their bug tracking forums if you think it's them and not you.

It might be teh app settling in - the first day every favicon (google, twitter etc) was replaced by mlkshks, has calmed down today. The capture is still temperamental though. If it happens again, I will put a report.

infini - are you using the bookmarklet or the context menu add on? or iOS?
posted by nadawi at 9:57 AM on January 2, 2012

firefox, XP - and I dragged [mlkshk] to the browser bar (whatever that is called - I like stuff there - can show screenshot if req)
posted by infini at 10:42 AM on January 2, 2012

I'm also not using it so much right now, mostly uploads from archives - I can try it again once and see what it does today ;p
posted by infini at 10:44 AM on January 2, 2012

I don't like that "capture everything on the page" bookmarklet, I find it really kludgy. Try installing their contextual menu add-ons for the specific browsers, it gives you the option to "save this image to MLKSHK" when you right click on a photo, right underneath "save a copy of this image". They support Chrome, FF and Safari so far.

It's fantastic, and I may or may not have it installed on my work computer because that's how addictive it is.

Ahem.

I also installed the Firefox add on that lets me 'save to mlkshk' with just a right click - its neater but doesn't automatically fill in a title. This is probably a good thing.
posted by infini at 10:33 PM on January 14, 2012

It does, actually. If you leave that blank, it'll get posted with just the name of the image. I think the reason that it looks blank when you're first posting is because people have been complaining about the automatic Tumblr-generated names attached to a lot of images being completely non-intuitive. This way, with a blank field, you're more inclined to at least try to come up with some sort of description of what you're posting.
posted by Phire at 10:35 PM on January 14, 2012

Otoh, trying to capture a mlkshk image by 'share on tumblr' is now borked ;p
