Locked Out... ... and erased from the Internet! January 3, 2012 9:51 AM   Subscribe

I asked a question and nobody answered. I asked again, then jessamyn deleted my question. Do I have the right to ask a third time?

The question was: if you are locked out of Facebook, how do you get back in? The answer is, scan in your government-issued ID and email the image to them.

I think it is very important for the users of Metafilter, indeed the users of the entire Internet, to know that this is the answer to the question. So, deleting the question from AskMeFi seems like censorship. Please explain?

If a question leads to discussion and debates, why is that a bad thing?

You were asked to confirm who you are because our security systems thought you may not be using your real identity with this account or that you may have multiple accounts. If you’ve already tried to log in at www.facebook.com and followed the instructions to confirm your identity, but weren’t able to complete the process, we’ll need to see other proof of your identity.

Here’s how to proceed:

1. Use a scanner or take a digital photo of a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport), which shows your full first and last name and date of birth.
2. Reply directly to this email and attach the image of your ID to the message.
3. We will confirm that your ID and account information match. As soon as we verify your identity we’ll delete the image of your ID.

Did you not get the email I sent you back to your email to us? I said that if you want to re-ask the question, it's totally 100% fine but people will think it's sort of weird if you don't basically mention that you asked an identical question a week earlier. People were flagging your question as a double and it wasn't clear if you'd taken any steps since you'd asked the question (with almost no answers) a week earlier. I offered to edit and re-open your question again and I did not hear from you.

And no, MeTa is not where you re-ask questions that were deleted from AskMe. Please contact us if you are having problems with how the site works.

Generally isn't AskMe is for getting answers to your question? If you already know the answer to your question, why are you asking it? Diseminating information that people "should know" is only a secondary function and not a reason to ask a question.

However, if you've discovered the answer to your previous question, YOU can post the info there, which will disseminate it to the internet if that is important to you. You can then even mark your comment as the best answer.

Jessamyn's already tried to answer you on this a couple times now. If you need to re-ask a question you've already asked, it's important to at least make it clear what has happened since the last time you asked and why you're asking again—just flat out reposting without comment to "bump" it isn't really how we expect folks to use askme and tends to make people think something is up.

Because its identical to your previous question? And that question is still open, you can put the answer in there if you are concerned about it being used for future reference.

This seems like something that is of particular importance to users of Facebook.

Users of the internet can search for "locked out of Facebook" on any search engine and find this information pretty readily within just the first page of over 40,000,000 results of news articles, Facebook updates, blog posts, and Facebook pages referencing this topic. So I think the internet will be okay. But as noted above, you can post the answer to your own question and mark it resolved, and this will also benefit the internet.

This isn't censorship. This information isn't being suppressed. See above.

What Greg Nog says. You can even mark your own answer as "best answer".
And indeed, Ask isn't for discussing but for quality answers, in order to help the asker in the first place, and anybody who happens to walk past in the second. The entire internet isn't going to look at the correct answer no matter what.

We should anyway be more worried about all the instances where we become eternalized on the internet without even knowing about it... stupid facebook... mutter...

I get it --- you cannot just "ask again" to get fresh answers from a new audience of AskMeFi readers.

I get it --- the second question got derailed because the first question was still open, and all the discussion was about that instead of the answer to the question.

That is why I have come here to MetaTalk to ask --- will I be allowed to ask my Facebook question a third time, without having it deleted by MetaFilter mods?

If I am understanding you correctly, you now have the answer to the question, correct? If so, then no you can't ask a third time and I don't understand why you WOULD ask a third time. Questions need to have a goal or a problem to be solved and that has to be something other than "How can I provide a place to give an answer to a question I had before?"

I am sorry I am having a difficult time understanding you, but could you explain why you want to ask a third time if you already have the answer? Or am I misunderstanding you?

I'm not a mod but I think it's a safe bet that the answer to this would be no, especially because you'd be asking a question you've already asked, is already open, and which you already know the answer to.

I can't really speak to whether or not the information about how to unlock your account is Important Information, but I do know that the act of asking a question just to have the answer written down somewhere for other people to read, when you already know the answer to it, doesn't seem to be what the Ask part of the site is for.

Probably not - you already know the answer and if you'd just post it in your original question and mark that comment as "best answer" as others have suggested, all will be right with the world. If you already know the answer and can contribute it, what's the possible benefit of asking it again?

For instance, one of my questions got nearly no helpful responses, but I eventually figured out what to do and posted the best answer for myself and for the benefit of future people looking for similar information. A while later, someone even memailed me asking for more info about what I did, so the system worked.

If you post the answer in the original (first) question, then everyone will be able to find it. AskMe has pretty good Google rank.

Trying to explain here: the first question being still open means that people can find and read it. So it is still fully functional, even within limits for the use that you envision for it, informing the accumulated www of the correct answer. Now post it there, go ahead. Doesn't cost extra.

1. You asked a question.
2. You found the answer to your question on your own.
3. You tried to ask your question again for some reason.
4. Someone spotted it as a duplicate and the question was deleted.
5. You don't understand this.
6. You now want to ask your question a third time.
7. Everyone here but you can correctly guess what will happen if you do this.

If the answer you found to your question is important, post it in the thread that's still open.

Dude, all you have to do is the following:

(1) Go to your original question, which is still open.

(2) Copy the following text, then paste it in the answer box.

Hey! I figured out the correct answer. Here's what FB says you need to do:

(3) Hit "Post Answer."

(4) Mark that post as "Best Answer."

This will do exactly what you want to do - provide the correct answer to future askers who are looking for it, in the correct location - i.e., your original question.

Hang on everyone -- I think it's more like this:

1. Shipbreaker asked a question.
2. Shipbreaker found the answer to your question on their own.
3. Shipbreaker tried to ask a RELATED question, but failed to make the "new data" part of the question clear.
4. Someone flagged it as a duplicate and the question was deleted.
5. Shipbreaker didn't understand the reason for the deletion.
6. Shipbreaker posted this MeTa and Jessamyn clarified the deletion.
7. Shipbreaker clarified that the question was about new data and was related to the firstr question.

Shipbreaker, if I have that right, then:

1. You could ask your new question as a follow-up comment within your ORIGINAL question, and can also update your original question with a comment; or

2. As a new question, but CLEARLY indicate that it is a new question, emphasizing the new and different material.

...related to the same topic (getting back into Facebook), giving full written explanations of what has transpired, what my question is, and what my goal is, in the hopes that an Ask MetaFilter user can read the question and possibly help me find an answer to it...

So your original question apparently shot short, and the correct answer you're citing here above doesn't really help you? Is that it??
Well. If you're going about it really smartly, like: use the edit window and preview before hitting post and think about it for a while, I'm sure that you can go to that original thread, post a re-phrased, more precise version of your original question, one that is more likely to help you in the end, and see who answers what. I guess it needs to be really very visibly a more precise version of what you originally asked (as opposed to a totally new "I also have this problem with facebook" question).

It's like in these fix-my-car threads. A lot of times, the first batch of answers helps the original poster to re-think their question, and then you often get a "nope, i tried this; when I press here it sounds like that; now it said boom; Yup, that was the solution" - type of exchange, where the original angle can totally change, depending on the problem at hand.

Right. Without more information about the specific problems shipbreaker is having with the admins of Facebook, no one is likely to be able to help, though.

Yeah, but I think at this point asking the question a third time should be able to fly as long as shipbreaker is careful to mention the previous question and the solution provided by Facebook that didn't do anything in an effort to get more information. By now, the original question is waaaaay off the front page of AskMe, which, perhaps sadly, means that no one is ever going to see it and be able to provide more information on it unless they've been following the question from the start (which seems highly unlikely). I'm not a mod, so it's not my call, but a new question framed in a way that acknowledges the previous question and the insufficient response from Facebook should probably stand. I think the core problem here is that enough time has passed since the original question that no one's going to stumble upon it to be able to provide more info.

Shipbreaker, it is also worth mentioning that even if LionIndex is right and you do end up reposting the question to AskMe, it's possible you won't get very many good answers simply because Facebook's customer service is notoriously bad and prone to catch-22 situations like this. A Google search turns up a lot of people with the same problem you have and not a lot of solutions beyond "email Facebook and hope for the best."

Your best bet might be that some Facebook employee is surfing MetaFilter and happens to see this thread.

posted by carsonb at 11:37 AM on January 3, 2012 [3 favorites]

Yep, Jessamyn offered to edit the one posted today to do what you describe LionIndex. Just so everyone reading this knows, if you post a question that's deleted, you can use the contact form to find out why, of course, if it's not clear from the deletion reason, but also, we can edit the question to meet the guidelines with your input, if possible. However, it needs to happen within the first hour or so, because when it's restored with the edits, it stays in its same page position as when it was first posted.

So as an example, let's say someone posts: "What was your favorite cartoon as a child?" and it's deleted as chatfilter. Then the poster contacts us right away and says, "oh, hey, I wanted to know because I'm trying to introduce my child to the best cartoons from each decade as a sort of fun little project; can I ask 'What are considered outstanding children's cartoons for each decade beginning from 1950 to present'?" We can make the change and reinstate it. But if it's a couple hours later or more, it's probably not going to be as useful because it's fallen too far down, and it's better to wait and post again.

I think it's very important for the internet to know that Garak is omnisexual and when Cardassians yell at each other they're actually flirting which means that his relationship with Odo is slashier than his relationship with Bashir.

I first run across "hir" in the short story "With The Bentfin Boomer Boys In Little Old New Alabama" by Richard Lupoff, as a pronoun used to describe an alien parasite (of no specific gender of course).

However I have seen it used as a pronoun for people who are transitioning or are of ambiguous gender. So don't complain too forcefully, please ;)

It's a multistage process. The good news is that you're halfway there. The bad news is that this is when things get complicated.

Stage 1: Ask a question. Do not receive a response.

Stage 2: Ask the same question again. Wait for Jessamyn to delete the question.

Stage 3: On a quiet moonless night, sneak into the forest. Whisper your question into a tree hollow. Tell no one where you've been or what you've done.

Stage 4: Within 4-6 weeks, your answer will arrive in a dream, sung by a barbershop quartet. Or in a Morse code message from a leaky faucet. Or possibly in a fortune cookie. We can't be totally sure about these things. But it will come to you, so make sure you're paying attention.

posted by futz at 2:10 PM on January 3, 2012 [1 favorite]

Serious answer that might be missing from this thread: not all questions get answers in a timely fashion, if ever. And even though questions can be closed to new answers, someone might still find your question and send you an answer.

You ask once, hope you worded your question well enough that you get your question across clearly, and clarify anything in follow-up comments under that same question. If no one answers or you don't get the perfect answer while the question is still highly visible, you don't get to ask again later and "bump" your question.

MetaFilter has enough "Google juice" that questions on AskMeFi quickly rise to the top of many relevant searches, so your question will be seen by many people with similar questions, sometimes within minutes of your question being posted. Just because it has fallen from the first page of questions doesn't mean it's unseen.

Getting back to the important question - what exactly is the backstory with Garak?
posted by panboi at 3:15 PM on January 3, 2012

Well, let's see if I can remember from watching all of DS9 start-to-finish about five years ago...

Um, he was basically the protege of the head of the Cardassian intelligence service. And then something happened that I don't recall. Either his mentor became a renegade, or Garak became a renegade against him. Either way, Garak eventually had to flee. And then I think he spent time elsewhere and then on DS9 doing some freelance spycraft for his homeworld, because he's still a patriot, but also being persona non grata. So he spends his time pretending to be a simple tailor on DS9 while actually being the most interesting and amusing character on the entire damn show.

He's actually Bashir's father, but he was corrupted by the power of the Pah-wraiths and turned to the dark side. But then Captain Sheridan and Lenier stole a couple of Starhound Vipers and flew them into the Lexx where young Will Robinson was being held captive, and that collapsed the Mumyian timestream and prevented the nuclear explosion that would otherwise have hurled the moon into deep space, which is how Space: 1999 got canceled.

shipbreaker: “And threats from the admins! My points were quite valid, re-read them more carefully.”

It's not really a threat; cortex is just letting you know the boundaries. And they're not really boundaries he and the moderators decide on arbitrarily.

I know a lot of this has been a bit confusing, and having a question deleted can be disoriented (as can being locked out of your Facebook account). But you have to accept that we, the people of Metafilter who try to answer your questions and the questions other people ask here, sort of expect certain things when we answer those questions. We expect that you're not jerking us around, and we expect that you're not manipulating us to make a point. I know I speak for a lot of us when I say that we put a lot into giving good answers on ask.metafilter. It's really not fun or cool for anybody to work hard on an answer only to discover you've been tricked into giving it. Can you see why some of us might be a little annoyed by that?

Like I say, I know it's disorienting to have questions deleted, so you might have missed this, but that's how a lot of us feel when we find out people have been posting questions or metatalk posts in a trollish way.

Muuuuch as I enjoy a pileon, this is why the green and the gray(brown to some) get different moderation. shipbreaker didn't get it, and didn't correspond with the mods, and maybe hasn't spent the last 10 years geeking out on teh web. Then thought that metatalk, where we talk about the site, was a good place to try to figure it out.

Once in a while, it's okay to be nice to people.

shipbreaker, spend some time emailing the moderators. There's a way-too-small link at the bottom right of the page - contact. That's how you launch a correspondence, though maybe they've contacted you by now.

Jesus, if this was Reddit and shipbreaker pulled the same stunt, there would be a subreddit devoted to hijacking this maroon Facebook account. Gotta like MetaFilter, even if it means having to tolerate idjits once in a while.

Unless you are deliberately trolling.

And, as far as I know, there is no way for him to get his account back once he is locked out!

Once in a while, it's okay to be nice to people.

And once in a while, people admit to deliberately trolling. And then patience becomes an exercise in futility.

Also, he did memail with the mods; the very first post in this thread is Jessamyn asking if he read the mail she sent him. He trolled them. Because he was trolling.

At this point I'm pretty sure what your problem ACTUALLY is may not be what you THINK it is.
