Just the above really.

I see someone doing something interesting at 140 by 140 and I think, "What the hell is The Whelk doing to that sloth‽" Then I am all, I know how to get an interobang!

Where metafilter lacks is a profile that has some user options.

Bowing out now due to poor formatting. Short: I want more options in the account profile. Long: hit me up later.

Seriously, let's make the user profile be the playground of the person ponying up the cash for the account. All else relies on the person signing in.

I'm not quite clear what you're asking for, but you might be interested in this historical MeTa where mathowie added user customization for profiles, and very quickly disabled it due to security holes.

Here is a thread about how to modify your profile using the style tag, although I can't find any discussion of when or why that stopped.

IIRC, for awhile, ThePinkSuperhero had her own uniquely formatted page as a legacy thing from before profiles were filtered. I think she was unique in having this after the filtering started, though I could be misremembering. Maybe it wasn't even TPS, I'm not sure.

I would love it if there were a safe way for us to add our own custom CSS to our user profiles, saved local to the site itself. I'd spend hours cruising profiles, and more hours tweaking mine, probably.

I'm sure it's doable, but I do recall it being said in the past that it probably wasn't going to happen (or happen again, anyway).

It'd be neat to find a way to bring back some more formatting flexibility to the user pages, yeah. Like jacalata notes, this is something we did do at one point; the big problem is with finding a way to simultaneously let people go nuts with their custom stylization while also absolutely preventing userpages from becoming potential sources of malicious cross-site scripting or other exploits. Details of that are a bit beyond my own experience, but the short version is that the reason there's not more flexibility currently is because it's a pain to provide that correctly.

I'm neither here nor there on larger profile photos, personally, though I think that between the also-on stuff and the free-form text of the profile page it's pretty easy to provide direct access to a larger photo or photos if someone wants that to be what people find on their page.

It's actually quite a pain to keep styles both full of deliciousness and free of maliciousness. It seems like with HTML and CSS, everywhere an external file can be referenced, javascript can be injected inline, which is poop.

OK, granted, they would probably just feed it to a minion, but maybe our mefite evil overlord has already exceeded his minion budget and is holding back.

Given that TPS is the second best of the Day One $5 n00bs, that she is universally known and loved on this site, I think it is only fair and right that her profile page be hardcoded to whatever shade of pink she desires, such that she may update and modify preferences without losing the specialness.

People with disabled accounts don't have the ability to change their connection status so I'm not sure it's fair to list them in the linked-by section. I get this, but at the same time upping the size or allowing a larger photo to be shown when clicked wouldn't increase bandwidth overhead or storage costs by anything significant. Many people wouldn't take advantage of the option, and I can't imagine there are many people who do a serious amount of profile spelunking.

Maybe enable the image tag in profile pages only and allow people to host their own?

No, anytime you can put an image inline there's the possibility of Doing Bad Things. We're still cleaning up old threads with inline images that turn into problems as hosts change hands.

People can link to images if they need to. I know it's more fun to have them inline, but we don't want to get into the hassles involved.
