End-of-year AskMe Followup Reminder December 30, 2012 9:23 PM   Subscribe

It's the 31st of December, so now is a good reminder to look through all the AskMe's you posted in 2012 and add any followups, as they will start to close over the next year.

They close after twelve months. Today is no more special in that regard than any other day.

While that is correct, I think one annual reminder on some calendar specific date is probably sufficient.

Yeah, I feel like it's an easy reminder. Obviously some questions will be fresh and may not be resolved yet, but others may have slipped your mind and the start of a new year is an excellent trigger for going back and examining them.

This is the end, my friend.

Any reminder for people to post updates, mark best answers, add resolved tags and thank respondents for taking the time to answer AskMes are a good thing. The miserable buggers who leave orphan questions are Metafilter's equivalents of people who don't tip their server.

Thanks for the heads up. About 3 years ago I posted and AskMe looking for a pecan recipe; although it never came up in the answers I was able to find it off-line (thanks, mom!). I thought about posting it in my own thread and marking it "resolved", but kept putting it off, thinking "Hey, I've got a whole year, what's the rush?" Well eventually I got around to going back to my question for an update, only to find out my year was up the day before! So let my tale of woe be a lesson to others; follow Deathalicious's advice and update your AskMes, before it's too late!

Can the mods make an exception on the "No Recipes in Metatalk" rule and let TedW share his recipe with us just this once?? Pretty please with cherries on top*??

only to find out my year was up the day before!

This is my excuse to say the same thing happened with me with the 30 day comment limit on the Blue after I forgot to revive the dead thread to tell everybody about my dream where I was living in the Mystery Shack on Gravity Falls. It was just as awesome as fans of the show might imagine -- like you wake up and desperately try to fall back asleep to continue your dream awesome. Then I didn't write about it that day and then a day later I searched for the thread. And I'd just missed the closing time.

On a related note, I'd like to thank Metafilter for giving me a safe space to not only admit but brag about one of the highlights of my holiday season being that I fell asleep in front of the TV and having a dream in which I was best friends with two 12 year old cartoon characters.

RE - This question:

WEAVE seemed like an awesome package, but not so much for what my team was trying to achieve. Same deal with Crossfilter and d3.js.

I looked over questions on stackOverflow too. Somewhere along my search there and here I stumbled upon Dygraphs, which is more or less perfect, and got even more perfect when they introduced custom plotters, albeit late in initial development. The only hurdle in the development of a product based on that is more or less related to complications with HTML 5 and trying to make it a true alternative to Flash.

So, what's the result? Flash version here, HTML 5 draft here. Updates and revisions pretty certain to come within the first half, three-quarters of 2013. I mostly made speed increases by exploiting properties of Adobe Flex/ActionScript and Javascript data/object structures respectively alongside properties of the source data files.

Thanks to all who responded to it!

Have a happy new year everyone!

Looking over my past questions, my new years resolution should be: "If you have to make more than two askme about this person, DTMFA!" Reading over it is like watching things slowly go down hill: "This is sort of a problem, how can we fix it? ... So this is a problem and it's gotten worse... oh god what's happening..."

Also: ask less askmefi questions. -slinks away-

Well, happy new year all. I just finished off two six packs with my father in law on new years morning, all before noon while gorging on sea food. I'm going to claim that this is a standard Japanese tradition. Yes, indeed. Unfortunately, the passing out part of the tradition seems to have been overtaken by the "let's go shopping" urges of Mrs. Ghidorah and my sister in law.

Anyway, happy new year, all. May you be healthy and happy, and able to celebrate with the tipple of your choice.

Happy New Year. 2012 was weird; it wasn't as bad emotionally/personally as 2011, and yet I know more people beset by serious external challenges (money, Sandy, business, reproductive) in 2012 than in any year previous. I join those who say, don't let the door hit 2012 on the ass. Hoping Lucky 13 brings all of us some of life's great joys and lucky strokes. Best to you all and thanks for the wonderful, thought-provoking, humorous and always interesting community.

Happy New Year! Looking forward to another year of fun and discoveries here and out in the world.

I'm also enjoying the refreshing drizzle amidst the sounds of fireworks in Austin, TX. We had a toddler version of NYE that ended with the TS ball drop, so it was almost startling to realise the increased crackling and booming was really marking midnight. Made my heart warm to see all the "voices" chiming in from near and far through various technologies in the relative peace of a corner bedroom facing a parking lot from which every firework in my zip code is being shot, apparently. Thankfully not disturbing the sleeping toddler, 2" from my arm.

Welcome, 2013!

Whew. Kind of a tough year--ups and downs and ups and downs. My father died in January (more of a relief than anything, to be honest), I quit my crappy job with the owners that were trying their best to run the company into the ground (when I left, I was owed 6 weeks of back pay, which was eventually paid with a check that bounced, then finally a cashier's check at my insistence), was offered my dream job which was then snatched away, went back to school, a friend from 20+ years ago found me on Facebook and now has become one of my best friends, lots of physical pain and medical bills, had to put down a cat and adopted a new one, etc., etc. A bit more beat up by life than last year at this time, but hopefully a bit smarter and stronger, too.

Happy 2013 to all.
