Pfft, finally.

Welcome to the club, or something. We don't have a proper club house set up yet, and the idea of badges has been shot down. You'll have to settle with the knowledge that there are more interesting topics out there, waiting to be shared. At least you aren't alone.

I'll make sure we get a club house put together in time for when I cross the threshold myself. Which at this rate will be—

Congrats!

Thanks for the reminder, flex, I meant to bookmark that one to come back to later (this is something I often have to do with Katullus's posts), but forgot. And thanks, Kattullus, for a body of consistently high-quality MetaFilter posts (and excellent recommendations on European pop music).

Good on you. I have been telling myself for a while that I've been sort of a lazy bastard, participating in conversations but not initiating any. Your effort provides incentive to contribute more to the community.

In case anyone is curious, per the infodumpster:
quin made the most posts last year with 221.
Artw came in second with 174,
the man of twists and turns was third with 156,
and fearfulsymmetry came in fourth with 156.

I keep thinking about creating a 2012 datawankery post based on stats from the infodumpster, but I don't know when it was last updated.

Kattullus is like a mountain, topped in snow and wreathed in clouds, seen from a great distance.

As mountains, topped in snow and wreathed in clouds, seen from a great distance, go, he is extremely nice an approachable. It must be all the volcanoes and hot springs of his icy northern home.

Thanks flex and everyone else.

MetaFilter is a wonderful site with a great community, and sharing links with all of you is a privilege. I like so much having a place where I can post interesting things I find online or draw together links on a subject I'm fascinated with. If MetaFilter and its community didn't exist, my life would be much poorer. So thanks all of you for being such a fantastic bunch of people to share links with.

posted by shakespeherian at 1:26 PM on January 2, 2013

Try finding out you're on the top of that list!

Wow, it's been ten years. 5400 comments in a little less than three years, but today I've added about 8000 in the last decade so ... 1800/yr (actually a lot of that was post-9/11 so maybe 2400/yr for two years running) to 800/yr. At least I'm out of the top ten!
posted by dhartung at 1:50 PM on January 2, 2013

Just realized I got knocked out of the top 10. Now I'm only the 11th best commenter, which really does not have the same ring as 9th. Unfortunately I'll have to remove "top 10 best commenter on internationally know and locally respected website" from my resume and LinkedIn. When I first made the top 10 I remember thanking my parents, my coaches and baby Jesus but now I'll have to apologize to them. I've failed. With their love I will mae it through this tough time and with their support I'm sure I'll be back on top soon.

Ha, I remember that list, that was right after I joined, and it impressed me deeply:
25 Contribution Indexes

  9.94 MiguelCardoso
  6.56 y2karl
I was convinced nobody would ever catch up with Migs.

And then in a few months or maybe a year I found myself in the top 10, and I gave myself a good talking-to and gradually slid off the list.

Oh, and hooray for Kattullus!

I gave myself a good talking-to and gradually slid off the list.

languagehat slid off the list
while others worked their way up
some just snarked, some just linked
some drank from the lurker's cup
and Kattullus all the while
kept making his quality posts
so raise your glass to Kattulus, friends
it's time for a Mefi toast!

Kattullus is like a mountain, topped in snow and wreathed in clouds, seen from a great distance.

There are the Alps. What is there to say about them?
They don't make sense. Fatal glaciers, crags cranks climb,
jumbled boulder and weed, pasture and boulder, scree,
et l'on entend, maybe, le refrain joyeux et leger.
Who knows what the ice will have scraped on the rock it is smoothing?

There they are, you will have to go a long way round
if you want to avoid them.
It takes some getting used to. There are the Alps,
fools! Sit down and wait for them to crumble!

Those who esteem Kattullus less might prefer a different line of Bunting's, from the end of one of his overdrafts: "— and why Catullus bothered to write pages and pages of this drivel mystifies me."

But not me! Not me!

kenko: "— and why Catullus bothered to write pages and pages of this drivel mystifies me."

I knew exactly which Catullus poem Bunting said that about (well, suspected and then looked it up to confirm) and I kinda agree with him (and kinda don't) but damn if my eyes didn't narrow and my irrational fandom didn't kick in something fierce and I momentarily resolved never to read another Bunting poem ever again. Then I got better.

Congrats, Kattullus! Count me as another MeFite who appreciates the posts you've made. It would be difficult to choose favorites (especially from the more comprehensive, historical, or otherwise very-serious-subject posts), but I'd like to mention just a few of the more recent ones I found especially fun:
- Comics by Anne Emond (thanks also for introducing me to Kate Beaton's comics via one of your comments a few years ago)
- Amy Sedaris crafts things
- Classic Covers of Penguin Science Fiction Books

And I somehow didn't connect the following posts with your username until I just saw them in your history, but I played the linked games a lot! So, thanks also for:
- Addictive as heck baseball game
- Lone Wolf choose-your-own-adventure series (I read many of the books way back when, so it was cool to be able to play them online.)
