METATALK FACTS

Posting in MetaTalk is illegal in 12 countries but is rarely enforced.

MetaTalk comes to us from Italian, the name for a burned loaf or bread or soured wine

MetaTalk's color comes from the famous Maftiere Tali ranching hound, a " spoiler" breed designed ti throw aphames and loose. It is extinct.

MetaTalk is the only word in the English Language to contain the words MetaTalk

" MetaTalk" referes to conversation the wealthy would have with each other before conversing with the local peasant folk, the talk before and about the talk, mostly MetaTalk consisted of " ugh look at this one" and " do we really have to do this?" which begat the common slur that someone being rude was "Speaking above ones head." This would later be bowlderized and softened to " that went over my head" to describe a confusing or poorly understood phrase, rather than referring to an outright insult.

After reading through a couple of the linked treasures, I think Blasdelb should team up with Matthew Vines. Well done. Was surprised to see fewer favourites than I expected, but then noted the setting it was posted in and nearness to the end of the thread. Still! Good stuff.

Also: there is no "worse" about posting or answering in AskMe, really, as long as participation is in good faith. I don't understand why it's looked upon so sneeringly by some when it has some of the best features of the whole MetaFilter world: great resource, great contributors, and endlessly interesting.

Wow, this is fantastic. And now I feel better about my MegaPosts. I'm not even on the top 10 this year! In fact, I haven't been #1 ever!

Though I am confused about how my Royal Institution Christmas Lectures post of 2010, with it's mere 33,390 characters in the main post was cut off by system limitations, when Nomyte's awesome 17 Hours of Russian Animation post clocked in at 90,521 characters. The character counts appear to be based on HTML, not displayed characters.

I think the split between the Blue and Green (or White and White, if you're the professional sort) is due to the Blue being the original MetaFilter, and the Green is a sub-site. I could imagine that people who came to MetaFilter for the posts on the main site would be surprised to find that they actually spend more time trying to be helpful and answer questions (or posing questions of their own).

But for more direct sneering, I could see AskMe being (incorrectly) lumped with Yahoo Answers and other crowd-sourced solution sites. It could be a mental evaluation made without thought, or intentional.

I think it's one of Ramones/Sex Pistols things where the Ramones (MeFi) were on the scene first but the Sex Pistols (AskMe) rode that wave and got more popular than the Ramones ever were.

Rustic Etruscan: ah, I understand. My apologies.

I think that some of that sneering got to me and I've been a little irritated about that for a while - while I paid up in '06, I'd been reading for a looong time prior, yet it took until '08 to finally delve into AskMe...and I was shocked at how useful, fun, and thoughtful it was. I don't know what I expected of it, but not what it is, hence my overeager defense of it.
posted by batmonkey at 12:14 PM on January 4, 2013

I have (fortunately?) never actually seen this sneering, but then I am not exactly Captain Paying Attention. Where does it happen? I mean, talking about other subsites -- in the gossipy "what they do over there" sense, not the "check out this relevant thing happening here" sense -- is considered about as gauche as talking about favorites outside of an official discussion of favorites.

Plus, it's not like anyone who spends a significant portion of their MeFi time on the gray has a leg to stand on about sneering over someone else's habits.

Compared to RI, there's less institutional corruption in your pants

Another problem with Favorites in RI is that you are always giving up 10-15% in kickbacks to legislators on various favorite-laundering schemes. Don't believe me? Go up to some of the small restaurants on Federal Hill; you'll see shady-looking fatcats trading bags of favorites for co-sponsorships all the frakin' time.

And honestly, I don't want to meet the person who has more institutional corruption in their pants than RI....

...if the Infodumpster doesn't filter out counts of deleted posts or comments...

Halfway down the list I started looking for the "worst of" awards: most metatalk callouts, most deleted posts and comments, most flagged, and the timeout leaderboard. Who's posts had the most attempted doubles? Who had the last word [last comment] in the most threads? Who made the most favorites, and did the most flagging? Who lost the most favorites? Who made the most edits? What are the banhammer batting stats for each mod?

But if the infodump doesn't track those, then I guess we can only have nice things.
(We could still graph them, though).

ceribus peribus: "Who had the last word [last comment] in the most threads? "

This has come up in MeTa before, although I can't find the thread. I ranked pretty high on the list; I often leave a threads unread in my browser for a long time, and end up leaving a comment after all the discussion has died down.

No.

Edited to add: Actually, it's not my call

(FYI: Not really "Edited to add" for real. God I'm so afraid of getting into trouble, I had to stop all over my not very funny joke. It's like elementary school all over again.)

If one of the categories was, who made the most comments in the Ask category "clothing, beauty, & fashion" during 2012, excluding Sidhedevil, I'd be first!

And I'm also first in the category who posted the most Ask questions in the category "pets & animals" during 2012, excluding Anonymous and patheral.

Very exciting!

Hmm, filthy light thief, if I c&p your displayed text & run it through wc

My character total came out close to the listed total from Infodump by copying the HTML of the post into MS Word and checking the character count there. I didn't check Nomyte's character total, assuming it was close if my post was. pb talked about the length cap on comments:
We have a 512,000 character limit set for text at the ColdFusion level. I was confused because Rhomboid's comment text that made it though was about half that. Since this is UTF-8 text, it must be throwing off a standard "character" for ColdFusion.

Anyway, 256,000 characters seems like an ok upper-limit. That's almost three treaties westphalia.
But nothing there about limits on FPP lengths.

This was an heroic effort, zarq, bravo!

In my dream Mefi we have an employee with the official position title of Metafilter Datawanker who does nothing but wank data all day and night and serves it to us in myriad splendid and intriguing ways. When the site is dull and uninspired, s/he serves up a dashing and provocative histogram appetizer to whet our posting hunger; when skies are gray and spirits are down, a tasty and filling pie chart to soothe our souls; when things are tense and testy, a gentle amuse bouche of unexpected correlations. I long to know how organic food sales affect number of favorites, for example. Do we need to relax and wind down after work? An "Open Bar" Chart of time and frequency cocktails! And, O! The Venn Diagram Buffet every Friday! Wear your yoga pants!

infini, you're just not applying yourself. I bet that if you really worked at it, slacked at your job, gave up real-life social relationships, and really and truly devoted your time and effort to metafilter, then you, too, could play second fiddle to griphus.

It's really all about envisioning what's possible and setting your mind to it.

Whose comments were most favorited? All-time record holder: DarlingBri (17595)

I had no idea. I mean, I was vaguely aware I am approaching 25,000 favourites (I am planning to buy myself a cupcake) but I didn't realise there were records or that I held one. That's big fun, thanks for pointing it out. Also, that is a classy list of people to find myself lumped with. Like, I actually feel better dressed now than I did when I put this bathrobe on this morning. Way to go, Ask!
