I don't know about you, but I'm curious May 24, 2002 5:47 AM Subscribe
I don't know about you, but I'm curious. The membercount has been hovering at 14000 for the last week (?) or so, and just this evening went to 14001. Strange that the profile for user 14001 says "member since: March 15, 2002." Is there an interesting story here, or do I just need another hobby?
oh, its a VERY interesting story. but if we tell you, we'll have to kill you.

The latter, not the former. I suggest gardening or cooking, but travel is also fun, too.

Ak-chew-ally, 'twas I that just ticked the MeFi count to 14,001 altho' my user no. is 14162 so there's some kinda mystery there Mr WonderChicken...
...and after 8 months I'm no longer limited to random jabberings / dodgy tag closing in jonmc & owillis's comments boxes.
Should I sing a song or something..?

Yes, you do need another hobby.
Yes, I noticed, too.
As for the rest, I just figured it was kind of pointless to bother asking about user numbers anymore. Remember that every once in a while, someone will pop up with a number higher than the actual current "top number." Maybe this is one of the one's Matt mentioned that he's given as a result of a donation, and it only showed up today, for whatever reason.

On refresh : well, OK, Su. That's way less interesting than I'd hoped.

I've been curious about this for a few months but have not taken the time to search MetaTalk for an explanation. I assumed the discrepancy was due to the fact that some folks have been weeded out for whatever reason (re: settle). Seemed like too many though. Oh well, just curious. Welcome i_cola.

All right.
So I went to visit member 14012. There's a link there, in the site, surfacelevel.com or some such.
I clicked the only link on the site.
It led to URBN.com. Urban Outfitters. I "Eh"ed and moved on.
About thirty minutes later, I receive this:
Soooooo, what's the trick here? I'm curious. (I see something in there about localhost, not quite sure how to decipher all of the headers.)

Hi, i_cola, welcome to the big tent, good to have you aboard. We'll be performing your initiation ceremony shortly, as soon as we can round up two goats, a skateboard, a jar of mayonnaise and some Tito Puente records.

localhost just means that the originating computer that sent the email was the same as the mail server. (localhost is computer terminology for "myself.")

The total indicated seems to be the total number of legitimate accounts; there have also been, however, a number of test and bogus accounts set up at various times. The total number of real accounts + the total number of bogus accounts will give you the number of the last account registered; at this moment, that would seem to be 11462 (whose owner has commented in this thread).

moz babe! I know what localhost is. *grin* I was just wondering if, oh, I dunno, there was something in the site that maybe found my e-mail address in a cookie or... I'm reaching here. Genuinely confused! This is too coincidencey to be one, y'know?
The getting an e-mail after visiting the URBN.com site, I mean. It's too early in the day to ferret out another MeFi conspiracy.

i don't believe websites can access cookies not set by the same IP address. (i.e. by another server.) and there may be a more unique form of identification involved.

precocious -- the surfacelevel site is registered to a guy who apparently works for a an email marketing company (promotif) which does not list urban outfitters or anthropologie as a client. The Weblinc in your email header is the name of URBN's web development partner I think. No idea how they got your email, its very interesting.

I think stavros' new hobby should involve building spacecraft, into which crunchland could be placed and subsequently flown into the sun's core.
