AskMe Has Changed My Life May 12, 2013 2:21 PM   Subscribe

Back on April 20--three full weeks ago--I saw this AskMe about Sherlock/Watson fanfic, and idly clicked on it. Then I followed a few links, because why not? I'm a curious sort of person.

Three weeks later, I've read hundreds of thousands of words, my children are neglected, my house is a mess, I may need in-patent rehab if they have that for addictions to angsty heartbreaking John/Sherlock porn, and... well, let's just say that things are very good between me and my partner just now.

I'm not sure whether that thread ruined my life or improved it immeasurably, but I'd like to thank Jacqueline for posting the question, and everyone who made recommendations, especially tzikeh, Frowner, That's Numberwang!, exceptinsects, and snakeling. I'm basically posting this because I can't invite them all out for coffee to giggle together about our embarrassing obsession, like teenage girls with a copy of Tiger Beat.

Sherlock is one of the best examples of the bleed between mainstream fiction and fanfic, as he has been the subject of endless revisitations, revisions, reinterpretations, new stories (there's a very good author from Minnesota who has published several books about Sherlock visiting the Home of the Frozen Chosen), and whatnot. He's one of the most limned characters in modern performance, and everything from House to Lyserg Diethel from Shaman King borrow from him.

I think the only line between fanfic and legitimate fiction based on Holmes is how it gets published.

My current sub-project is a piece of fanfiction for a Sherlock Holmes TV reinterpretation that doesn't actually exist. It's either a brilliant solution or unadulterated wankery, but, as Bunny says, either way people will generally recognize it.

also I would pick Elementary over Sherlock any day of the week and not just because of Lucy Liu and the fact that they have a trans character who is not mocked or fetishized or victimized.

I also like how even though Holmes and Watson in Elementary are both straight(ish) and opposite gender, there is never any implication that they should or would or could hook up, they're just friends and coworkers and this doesn't have to be some sort of a Moonlightingesque "will they or won't they?" plot point. And yes, that trans character is great.

But damn some of that fiction out there is fantastic. I love it. I love that people write it and that they write it enthusiastically and (mostly) well. And I love that other people love it as much as I do.

When did this happen?

Episode 19. Candis Cayne. Not a recurring character, that I've seen, but just another one of the people whose life intersects with Holmes/Watson and whose somewhat different life choices (not being trans but the relationships she chooses to have which she talks to Watson about somewhat) are seen as human and normal.

And I think Elementary's Holmes appeals to me more than Cumberbatch because there's not the "Oh everyone jokes that they're together" angle. Miller is portrayed as attractive-but-not-striking and a little weird and occasionally unlikeable (and not so handsome and well-dressed that you forgive him) and the autism/aspie angle is something that shows up (as PinkMoose says, obliquely) as both a benefit and a hindrance even to the detective work he's doing. Liu has her own backstory (and always impractical footwear) and even though she's technically the apprentice, the show wouldn't work without her.

This really drives me nuts. We just re-watched the first episode, and they started with this business right out of the gate.

It reminds me of many years ago, when I attended a women's music festival called Rhythmfest in, I think, Tennessee. The producer was a friend of Melissa Etheridge, and every year, ME would show up to do a "surprise" set on the Saturday night stage. The year I was there, probably 1991 or 1992, ME hadn't come out yet, but, playing to an audience made up almost entirely of lesbians, she spent the entire evening dropping coy "am I or aren't I?" comments. The crowd ate it up, but it really pissed me off. I thought she should either come out, or shut up about it.

That's how I feel about Sherlock. They should either stop banging that drum (or, ideally, not have started it in the first place), or get them together. As a joke, it gets tired, and John's constant denials start to smack of homophobia.

Ooh, are there social features on AO3? Could we follow each others' bookmark lists or something? I just recently got my account there so I don't really know yet.

As far as the John & Sherlock "do they or don't they" stuff goes, their UST is essentially canon. While it's mostly subtext in the ACD stories, it's definitely there if you look for it, and many generations of fans have explored that aspect of the story. Holmes/Watson was a thing well before the BBC adaptation. I actually think it's nice that everyone wants them to get together on BBC Sherlock; instead of it being some Victorian love that dare not speak its name that everyone pretends isn't there, they acknowledge it and play with the possibility. I actually prefer that, because even in the original ACD stories, John and Sherlock are pretty obviously in some kind of love, whether it's sexual or not, and I like that the BBC adaptation is faithful to the tension and chemistry between John and Sherlock.

Your OTP might not be my OTP, but everyone's OTP is OK

"

If I recall correctly the writer/producer/head honcho was pretty adamant that there will be no ship. Which makes me love it even more. The local channel it is on had to use clips from all five episodes out at that point to have a 30 second montage (intercut with THURSDAY NIGHT 10PM and HERE'S OUR BIG FUCKING LOGO and THIS IS THE SHOW NAME) to even hint at a ship. Which was cool. Plus I love the non-sexual physical comfort thing (not as in hugging, as in the comfort being around each other - I empathise because I am so bad at it).

There are plenty of Ask Metafilter posts asking for recommendations for non-fandom porn of various particular kinds. And I suppose a fannish response might be "try it, it could be fun!" - part of the culture is the idea that porny writing can be complex, interesting, healthy, and something to share with acquaintances who have similar interests.

But it's not just porn, really. It's hard to explain to people who haven't fallen down the rabbit hole, but it's this...very friendly, joyful, feminist, smart, collaborative, imaginative community of writers and readers (and artists of various kinds), with the shared belief that it's good to dive into the subjects that many other kinds of interesting media treat hesitantly (or not at all) - both pleasurable subjects like sexy porny fetishy sex and not-so-pleasurable topics like every kind of tough life issue. But part of the idea is to try to dive into these subjects with respect, so for example if an author decides to write about a character dying, that author will tag the story with "character death" so that readers can choose to skip it. Anyway, I'm generalizing a lot and mostly paraphrasing this article about the "Id vortex", but hopefully this provides some context.

Fandom is life-changing in a positive direction for a lot of people (including me), and I hope finding your favorite porn stars did that for you, but it seems more frequent in fandom.

Since The Whelk shared, perhaps I will too. I have actually written a single piece of fanfiction myself. It's a Pride & Prejudice fic in which Wickham and Darcy have a past. Rated PG.

Re-reading all the Sherlock/Watson stuff, I remembered that in high school, way back in 1982 or so, I had been reading Arthur Conan Doyle and also read a long book about Jack the Ripper. Intrigued by the idea that they were active in London at the same time, and that Jack the Ripper had never been caught, I started a story in which Holmes investigates and comes to the inescapable conclusion that he himself is the Ripper. I couldn't manage to write my way out of it, though, so I never finished it. My first fanfic!

My biggest complaint with Mass Effect is that when it came down to "who dies, Ashley or Kaiden" there was no option for "both".

Metafilter should not become Tumblr.

Metafilter's had silly obsessions with pop culture since forever. To complain vaguely about mefi's Tumblrism is to establish one's ignorance of mefi's old-school Livejournalism. It's up there with complaining about cat posts ruining the site.

I feel badly for both members of Team Milky Way, since in 2 the survivor's given the unenviable plot position of telling the player no, they can't put the entire team back together and gets a lot of fandom blowback for that. It's an important role -- the only thing that saves the shaky setup plot of 2 for me, really, and I'm glad that Miranda's dialogue in 3 and the Citadel DLC back up the Virmire Survivor's point that Cerberus/TIM being completely aboveboard in resurrecting Shepard is unlikely to say the least.

That said, I feel worse for Ashley, as I can never in my many playthoughs justify saving her. I always send the tech guy with the bomb and the soldier with the advance team, and then go back for the bomb because trusting that the geth couldn't disarm it seems to be a bad command decision. The storyline makes sense & feels right to me -- formerly xenophobic woman dies a hero to the Salarians and redeems her family name -- but I'd like to see her storyline in 3 without going to YouTube. Oh, well.

1) You're welcome! Always happy to help people form addictions.

2) I am not much of a fanfiction writer -- I mostly edit for other writers -- but if anyone wants to look at my (strange collection of fandoms) work, it's at AO3 under tzikeh. Mostly I end up writing for Yuletide, so you never know what the hell is going to turn up. I do have a BBC Sherlock story, but it's gen. (Also one vid, put up by my collaborator. I haven't vidded in years and years--maybe one day I'll upload my old vids....)

3) I... really wish people wouldn't rag on BBC Sherlock/Elementary by comparing it to Elementary/BBC Sherlock. They're such incredibly different shows. Impossible to believe, I know, but I like BOTH of them! Yes, BBC Sherlock has problematic elements. No, Moffat is not my favorite person. But, seriously, everyone should let people love the shows they love and play in their happiness and be happy and do the same! (Man, if I couldn't find a way to enjoy problematic entertainment, there really wouldn't be much out there for me to watch.) Do we really need to go the "Your favorite Sherlock sucks" route? Makes me sad.

4) Those who wish to follow elizardbits' tumblr, but cannot because of the NSFW element, just install tumblr savior (I know it comes in at least Chrome and Firefox flavors), and put "hey ladies" and "penis tag" on the black list. Then you can see all of elizardbits' fine madness and hilarity without risking teh pr0nz coming up on your screen. She is EXTREMELY consistent with her tagging. Caveat lector: as others have mentioned above, you run the risk of things like the phrase "WHAT IS HAPPEN" becoming part of your actual spoken vocabulary.

5) To assuage Charlemagne in Sweatpants' terror that Metafilter is becoming tumblr (short response: what), anyone who wants to follow me on tumblr can find me there. Look! Where I post things entirely separate from Metafilter! (Currently mostly stuff about Person of Interest, Sherlock, feminism, and American politics.)

Finally

6) #OH GOD HOW MUCH LONGER UNTIL SHERLOCK COMES BACK #MARTIN FREEMAN SAYS MAYBE IT WILL AIR IN DECEMBER #I AM EXCITE #TAGS LOOK RIDICULOUS IN A METAFILTER COMMENT #THIS IS HOW YOU KNOW METAFILTER WILL NEVER BE ANYTHING LIKE TUMBLR #WOFL WOFL WOFL

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
Parade's End
War Horse
The Hobbit
Star Trek: Into Darkness
Twelve Years a Slave
August: Osage County
The Fifth Estate

I still can't imagine how Freeman must have felt when Peter Jackson *rearranged the entire shooting schedule of what is now three movies* just so that he could play Bilbo while filming Sherlock, because Jackson simply would not have anyone else.

NO PRESSURE, MARTIN.

I started following Arrow mostly because I was weirdly enthralled at how it was way better than it had any right to be. Not good, exactly, but with far more solid writing and acting than you'd ever expect from a CW show about Green Arrow.

The thing is though, it's actually turning into a legitimately good show. There's still some weak spots (pretty much everything about Dinah Laurel, for instance), but they've really hit their stride on some of the elements that weren't really clicking at the beginning of the season.

(Also, yes, the showrunners seem fully aware that Stephen Amell's abs are one of their prime assets, and they don't skimp on them.)

But why is this site related? What makes this worthy of a callout? What does this say about the culture of Metafilter - is this what we want to be highlighting about the site? "What makes Metafilter different? Well, unlike the rest of the web, there's slash fic".

Charlemagne in Sweatpants: But why is this site related?

When a user sees something interesting posted in AskMe, follows up on it, and find that they think it's awesome, they sometimes come to MetaTalk to say, "Wow, this AskMe introduced me to something new and wonderful! I'm so glad it was posted!"

Just because this particular AskMe was about something you don't care for doesn't make it wrong and bad, and it certainly doesn't make it what we're "highlighting about the site." It's not like not that girl took out a full-page ad in the New York Times about it. I keep meaning to look up the very interesting essay--that I'm sure must exist--on the transition from 'filk' to 'songfic' and 'vignette' to 'drabble' and the new phrases coming up to replace those ('whump' and 'feels' are both new phrases for say, 'hurt/comfort' which itself isn't that old, since I joined fanficland in the late '90s). Fanfic vocabulary is fascinating.

If a song about a geeky topic is released by a professional musician (like a Wu Tang song or a nerdy indie rock song) to a general audience does it still count as filk?

Yay, so glad this thread has been making people happy! Everyone I know IRL who knows about my fannish identity forwarded me this AskMe thread -- some of them twice. Because basically this has been my life since last November:

1. Start thinking about fanfiction one day, and how I think it is cool in theory, but have never really gotten into much of it, and never really had any "ships". Wonder idly how much Sherlock fanfic there is out there.

2. Discover this thing called AO3 exists now, with lovely filtering and sorting capabilities.

3. Search, sort, filter.

4. OH HOLY CRAP

5. Realize that I ship John/Sherlock like if FedEx, UPS, and the post office got together, Voltron-like, to form a package delivery super service.

6. Read millions of words of John/Sherlock.

7. Start a Tumblr and follow ALL THE BLOGS that use the #Johnlock tag on a post.

8. Unfollow most of them... *wince*

9. Start writing my own fanfic.

10. Stop denying to all my IRL friends that this is a serious change in my life, and finally admit that I am now a rly srs Johnlock fan.

(And then I finally delurked on AskMe for that thread, because I was so excited, like TN!, to have relevant info to share.)

I still don't get why I'm so invested in this particular fandom & pairing, as opposed to my happy but less searingly intense investment in other fandoms and relationships. But I have finally surrendered to the fact that I am. And when someone else gets sucked into fandom (especially Sherlock, but really, anything that they're that excited about), I squee like I do when one of my friends starts an awesome new relationship. So this thread, it is squeeful for me.
