Memorial Day MetaTalk Queue May 23, 2013 11:37 AM   Subscribe

It's a holiday weekend in the US and we're turning on the MetaTalk Queue.

As we often do around holidays, we're going to queue MetaTalk posts instead of posting them directly to the site. If the post can be handled by a moderator via email, we'll do that. If not, the post will be added when there are enough moderators around to help out. This helps the MetaFilter staff take some time off to be with friends and family. Thanks, and have a good weekend.

Before you post to MetaTalk this weekend, consider taking a moment of silence instead to honor those brave men and women fighting flame wars overseas.

I imagine the queue is turned on by flipping a giant Frankenstein-style knife switch. When you flip it, a red rotating beacon goes on at the top of MeFi Tower until The queue is turned off. Please do not disabuse me of this notion.

Have a nice weekend!

The kids at the local tech school that I work at did that this past weekend. All our cemeteries in town have flags on the veteran's graves and the parade route has been marked as well. I'll be out of town. I've done that "Get paid to clean your house" thing for the weekend (aka AirBnB) and I'll be down in MA visiting family and the SO (and also working part of the time because restless_nomad is away). Anyone wants to chill out by but not at the beach, feel free to come down. I will probably miss the Boston meetup, alas.

Will my new Toyota MR2 pull out,
The soft top down, all cushions hot, all sense
Of being in a hurry gone. I'll drive
Down roads with speed bumps, cross a street
Of teenage drug dealers, smell the rape-seed oil; thence
The river's level drifting breadth began,

Sorry, mod holiday weekend has been cancelled.

I feel like I could be on a Trans Kid MetaFilter Thread bingo card, right next to "They are too young to make this kind of decision": "not that girl tells anecdote about son/partner."

Sometimes I feel this weird envy that all these other people are getting famous for having trans kids. But I don't think you get a hundred thousand hits on your blog or invited onto TV for "parents raising trans kid, everything going very well, medical professionals and school totally supportive." I mean, seriously: the principal of the school where he's going to kindergarten in the fall had never encountered a trans kid before, but by the time we met to talk about the issue more thoroughly, she had thought through confidentiality issues (who does and does not need to be told), record keeping (to what extent could the school records accurately reflect his choice of gender and name without legal documents), and bathroom use (the kindergarten bathrooms are unisex already, but other bathrooms throughout the school are boy/girl, and, while she supports him using whatever bathroom he is most comfortable with, she seriously though briefly considered whether the solution might not be to make all the bathrooms in the school unisex).

My dad did disown me over this, but he's always been an asshole so mostly that's been a blessing in disguise. Our interveiw would be like, "So, it's going well then?" "yes, going very well." "Good, good." "Yep." And then 40 minutes of dead air.

IN other news, I could totally be a person who posts on askme saying "hey I want a pic". In the four most recent MeTas that were posted, a mod was the first to reply with answers and that set a good tone for the threads as well. I liked it. It was nice not to see that first snarky answer that always seems to be the first reply of one. I wonder how many MeTas weren't posted because a mod answered a question directly.
