Sharks. Tornado. Sharknado. July 9, 2013 11:57 AM   Subscribe

I wanted to put this here because the odds of folks seeing it in the thread are pretty long, but ... this Thursday evening, it looks like there's going to be a MeFite group viewing of "Sharknado" in Chat.

... and thinking about whether to put this here or not got me thinking about other Chat-related events, and whether there has been any thought given to recurring ones. Is that something the community can just pull together themselves? Maybe some already are. But it seems like there's all kinds of things we could be using it for - Tuesday Night Diplomacy? Friday Night Fiasco? Sunday 2:30 PM Cat Enthusiasts Enclave? If such things are happening or start happening, can we make a directory of them somewhere?

If events start happening regularly in Chat it might be good to start a page at the MeFi Wiki that lists them.

I could also see doing a public Google Calendar of chat events. If someone leads each of the activities, they could get add/edit rights to a Google Calendar, and we could display that somewhere on the site.

But before we think out details on that, maybe see how things go on chat for this event and if it becomes a regular thing, we could add some stuff to support it.

why flying sharks are any more dangerous than flying lumber

I bet it's the teeths.

A relationship, I think, is like a shark in a tornado. You know? It has to constantly move in a terrifying death spiral or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark.

Friday Night Fiasco?

I liked this idea better before I realized Fiasco is the title of a game.

Your love is like a Sharknado, baby. I wanna ride.

"I'm worried that Sharknado is going to turn out to be the made-for-TV version of the letdown that was Snakes on a Plane" is a sentence I said out loud earlier today.

American Ninja Warrior is my favorite show that I've never watched. Every time I see the commercials, I think "I would probably really enjoy that."
posted by MCMikeNamara at 12:37 PM on July 9, 2013

The only reason anyone is tuning in is to see the big reveal on why flying sharks are any more dangerous than flying lumber.

Also why do sharks get Toto-ed while the other sea creatures are mysteriously nado-resistant?

The problem with ANW, as with many great shows in the lower reaches of basic cable, is that every episode is about 15 minutes of great television in a 1 hour bag. Perfect for DVR though.

I like the idea of Chat Events, but I hope that if they become popular, they could be spawned off into different chat rooms, so that people who just want general Chat with MeFites still have somewhere to go.

If this is the thing that finally gets me to venture a toe into chat, I'm going to be a little bit embarrassed. Although better that than the Cat Enthusiasts Enclave. (She said, just before recalling that she technically is a moderator of the Cats of Metafilter Flickr group and thus probably should give up on pretending not to be a crazy cat lady MeFite.)

Seconding Greg Nog: will this be viewable online? I want to hang out with the cool kids, but I don't have cable! Like elementary school all over again.

Thirding Greg Nog. I'm sure that some super-special technically inclined MeFites could come up with a variety of ways to help everyone who doesn't have cable enjoy the watch-along. Just, you know, find a way to communicate that solution to us without breaking any MetaFilter rules....

I'm a little embarrassed by how little initiative this shows. We're MeFites, damnit! We should be meeting up in and live blogging from an actual Sharknado.

No, Sharknado is Spanish for "Sharknaded."

All I can think of is the unholy smell that will occur after it's over. The Sharknado, I mean - not the chat, which sounds lovely.

Go watch the video. There are clearly very many CGI sharks just waiting to pelt us with their bits. And if you watch very closely, you can clearly see that half of the sharks were shaving themselves with straight razors when they were taken up, and the other half were refilling their salt shakers. Which is kind of far fetched if you ask me. Why would sharks need salt shakers? They live in the friggin' ocean!

I trust that Thunder Levin, the writer behind Sharknado, whose work you might remember from 2013's Atlantic Rim, 2012's American Warships (which you might remember from its original title American Battleships), and 2008's Mutant Vampire Zombies from the 'Hood!, will have put together a tight screenplay that answers all your questions from the trailer and more.
