A navigation oddity July 14, 2013 3:03 PM   Subscribe

Small oddity on in-thread navigation: when I click on the timestamp of a comment, it goes to the top of the screen but with some buffer above it. When I use "." and "," to navigate through the page (or "j" and "k"), there is no buffer. More oddly, clicking the timestamp then using "." actually takes me to the same post, just removing the buffer. Am I the only one having this issue navigating?

This is in Chrome v28.0.1500.72 m on Windows 7. I've noticed it on Mefi, Ask and MeTa.

None of that occurs for me, i.e. no "buffer" (or always the same), clicking the timestamp then using "." correctly advances to the next comment, etc.

I'm using Safari 6.0.5 on OS X 10.8.4.

Same version of Chrome and also on Win7. Same behavior as graymouser reports. Not that it bothers me.

I realize many people probably don't do that for navigating through posts, but I like it to keep my place in the thread.

At least on my Win7/Chrome setup, the buffer mentioned seems to be exactly the height of the blank space between one comment and the next. To my eye it's actually more aesthetically pleasing. Maybe it's the j/k navigation that's slightly off?

Yeah, I'm seeing this too in Chrome and Firefox on OSX. I'm not seeing it in Safari.

So yeah, it's a slight hassle because you have to click j/k (or ./,) one extra time if you've already clicked a timestamp. I'll see if I can get rid of that.

Just in time for Metafilter's anniversary, it's my annual reminder of the awesome keyboard shortcuts that I somehow I always forget about!

I tweaked the keyboard navigation to account for the space Firefox and Chrome are adding above a targeted comment. Most browsers shouldn't have that extra keying after targeting a comment now.

Yep, fixed for me. Thanks!
