MetaFilter Fantasy NFL Football August 23, 2013 10:58 AM   Subscribe

Hut, hut, hike! The HGH has been injected, the CTE has been diagnosed, the ACLs have been torn, and now it's time for some NFL football! Please join the MeFi Fantasy Football League. It's a Standard scoring, 10 team league, and the draft is scheduled for 9:00 PM (Eastern) on Sunday, August 25th. The league password can be found inside.

The league ID number is 1075392 and the password is "pancake". I'd rather not expand the league past 10 teams, so sign up quickly!

Apparently, "Camouflage" is profanity. WT*, ESPN.

Might have to do auto-draft because of conflict with Breaking Bad, but looking forward to playing. Will have to make some mental adjustments to playing in a non-IDP league with standard scoring.

See if "Concussion" is legal.

I'll admit it - I'm the guy who saw this thread, immediately started a team, then remembered how much fun I had watching games last year when I took the year off of fantasy football, so I quit the league 3 minutes later. RIP Human Growth Trombone

Really, antonymous? I find that I have way more fun watching when I'm playing fantasy. That may be due to the fact that I'm a Lions fan.

Having a fantasy team makes watching the games less fun? How's that?

It's actually kind of true. I get maybe a bit too pissed off at my players for not performing as well as they should and I don't enjoy the game as much as I would as a disinterested observer. This year I am doing it in memory of my recently departed father, who was a big Fantasy Football fan. My team name this year, and my brother's -- he's the other player in the league surnamed Provost -- are tributes to him. One year he had trouble remembering his username and password, and so my brother and I had to help him out. Turns out he had set his username to "Z. Z. Pitts" (not at all his name, his actual name was the same as mine) and his password had been "billymays". He claimed he had no memory of why he had chosen either of those things.

Fantasy is fun, don't get me wrong, but sometimes it's hard to enjoy and appreciate a team sport like football when you're not-so-secretly rooting for an unlikely individual outcome. Hoping that a drive stalls just so your FG kicker can get you three points, or cheering for your favorite team, but cheering for certain guys on your team a little less because you're playing against them in fantasy this week. And if you get obsessive about this stuff (as I do), choosing which defense to play based on the opponent's offense, or not playing a guy because he's playing a good defense next week, or staying glued to Twitter at 11:58 on Sunday to learn that guy who started the week as "probable" is in street clothes...like I said, fantasy is a blast, but I feel a little more liberated as a fan by not paying attention to all that. I'll admit that my knowledge of each team's personnel is a bit weaker than it was during my fantasy days, but I try to make up for it with Madden.

I hate situations where my fan interests and my fantasy interests conflict, but I am completely okay with rooting against the Eagles this year, so I'm in.

I can't add another league to the mix, but I'm in for the pick 'em group!

woohoo...i was wondering when this thread would show up. played last year in a yahoo league and had a lot of fun doing it.

Rock Steady...dude... I've already started watching American Ninja Warrior on your suggestion and now this. If you want my free time, you could have just asked.

But seriously, thanks for setting this up. I'm in.

My enjoyment level of the NFL as a whole increased big time with combining NFL Red Zone and fantasy teams last year. Mostly I am just a fanatic Eagles obsessive and I didn't really have motivation to care about teams outside of the NFC East that much.

In as Fillydelphia Wonderbolts.

I follow NASCAR too and did a fantasy NASCAR team this year and THAT has really frustrated me. May not do it again, it's just way too easy for a good pick to go bad over pure luck in a race.

That's adorable.

Been saying it for over 20 years now, it's the joke that keeps on giving.

One day, guys, one day...

Weeden has actually looked really good vs vanilla D in the preseason so far. If I were a Browns fan looking at some of the success Rob Chudzinski had with Cam Newton in Carolina, I'd be a little hopeful.

I'm in the pick'em group, but football is becoming harder and harder to be a general fan about. Every week during the season, I go into a total media blackout until I can finally watch my Bears game (and no, for the most part, they aren't one of the frighteningly small handful of games that get broadcast up to a week after the game, so I use... other methods).

I love football, but I can't watch the games if I know the score. Highlights, sure, I guess, but the tension of watching the game without knowing the result turns into the slog of waiting through all of the downtime when you know Cutler is just going three and out.

So I don't really 'follow' the NFL anymore, because following all of the teams is something that would most likely spoil the results for my Bears game.

What I'm trying to say is, I'm in for the pick'em, but I barely have any idea who's good anymore. It looked like they were trying to say that Baltimore is somehow the underdog against Denver, which looks like it shouldn't be. Bizarre.

I tried to sign up for the pick'em, but I can't for the life of me understand how the Yahoo! Sports page works. I am completely baffled right now.

I would love to play, but last year I moved mid-season and my new ISP (AT&T U-Verse) somehow took over all of my Yahoo sites leaving me unable to sign in anymore and I am still stuck with that. It only wants to let me sign into Yahoo using some non-existent AT&T account. I tried to follow the steps to sign in with my old account as they were presented last year but I didn't have any luck. Has anyone else run into this crazy issue?
posted by feloniousmonk at 9:47 AM on August 24, 2013

Hah, I crossed discussion forums there. I'm really glad this is ESPN this year rather than Yahoo! But naturally, it's full. If you end up expanding the league, I'm interested.
posted by feloniousmonk at 9:51 AM on August 24, 2013

I'd be happy to see it expand to a 12-team league, myself -- might want to shrink the rosters by combining the TE/Flex position, though, since getting a usable tight end is tough in deeper leagues.

Maybe another league is in order, because I'm interested, too. That's 33ish percent of a league in the last three posts.
posted by Ruki at 11:18 AM on August 24, 2013

Actually, as far as I can tell, I can't make any changes to the league settings, now that it is set up.

Look under "LM tools." League settings just tells everyone what the current settings are.

Draft for the first league commences in a little less than half an hour, in case any of you are hanging out here and forgot about it.
posted by Rock Steady at 5:37 PM on August 25, 2013

I'd be happy to play in both MeFi leagues if nobody else fills the last two spots.
posted by tonycpsu at 7:42 PM on August 27, 2013

puckupdate, I just joined leaving only one more spot to fill. I became a fantasy junkie last year so it only makes sense to double up this year. I just want to point out our draft is scheduled to be after the real season starts Sept 5. I know this doesn't matter from a fantasy perspective but wanted to make sure it wasn't an honest oversight.

puckupdate, found it buried in the FAQ but once the league is filled, you can change the date with a league-wide vote, with 6 votes to change. I'm used to NFL.com where LM has supreme power and can do anything he/she wants. Who else wants in? Anyone? ANYONE???

If there isn't enough interest for a 3rd MeFi league, I bet there will also be a SportsFilter league at some point, although I haven't seen it open yet.
