Jabiru for Android for Mefi Chat November 16, 2013 3:54 PM Subscribe
I have been using Xabber on Metafilter chat. I had a lot of problems with it. Pb kindly did some research and found that Jabiru is more compatible with the chat program used by Metafilter. For mefi chat, Jabiru is superior in every way to Xabber except one: Initial setup is a confusing pain. It took me two days with help from pb to work out the bugs. So I have written a tutorial.
The tutorial is a page on one of my websites*. I have put the link in my profile. Hopefully that will allow others on Android to be happy chat participants.
*I am well aware someone will have an issue with that. I am routinely accused of doing it wrong. I did it that way because I can display images (screenshots) which I cannot do here on Metafilter or, as far as I can tell, on the mefi wiki, I am familiar with how to load it, etc. And I am quite busy right now and cannot give this tutorial any more of my limited time. It had to be convenient for me or it wasn't happening. I was going to make it a stand alone page, unfindable without a direct link, but technical issues prevented that. Sorry, everyone who hates me.
No, I don't have an issue and I don't need community input. But I promised pb I would announce it here after the tutorial was done as a service for the community.

Wow, thanks!

Yay, it works! I just set it up on my Android phone using your tutorial. It took less than 5 minutes. Thanks so much!

Anybody who dings you for doing this wrong is doing it wrong.

This looks helpful. Since 97% of my internet use is via an android device I haven't been interacting via chat. I'll try this out when I have time. ( and report back about my experience) Thanks.

Cheers, I'm going to do this tonight and finally peek into chat (unless I get too nervous...)

I just got online for the first time today and made a couple of minor edits to the tutorial for clarity's sake. If anyone has questions/critiques, don't hesitate to speak up (here or email/memail).
For those looking to try chat for the first time, I think it's overall a great group dynamic most of the time. Chat is basically food porn 23 hours a day, followed by discussion of sex and other topics. ;) So if it would be a personal tragedy for you to feel inspired to bake more or eat better cheese, just don't go. You will regret it. :-P
