There are two things it could be:
First option: your DNS server, whatever it is, had a cache of metafilter.com that predates the root server getting an update on the metafilter.com domain, but did not have a cached entry for www.metafilter.com. Thus, whenever you look up metafilter.com, you get the old entry, but when you look up www.metafilter.com, you get the new entry. Once the TTL (time-to-live) for the metafilter.com entry expires, it'll update it and be correct again.
Second option: the new DNS servers don't support root addresses (addresses that live at the root of a domain name), for whatever reason.

www.metafilter.com is working for me, but metafilter.com (sans www) is not.
Same was true for me yesterday afternoon, but today it seems fine.

Metafilter works fine, but my little cardboard pine tree has gone past it's best. Everyone stay out of my bathroom.

Also, irc.metafilter.com resolves to www instead of (the currently kaput) irc.turlyming.com. Is this a permanent change to the zone, or just that zoneedit.com doesn't have the complete data? Or is #mefi supposed to curl up and die now?

i assume that matt is using wildcard DNS settings with zoneedit - so, www/irc/whatever.metafilter.com would naturally point to www. when this is resolved, #mefi and #blogirc will be back ... and i will finally get email again.

Thanks, chrish! Hell of a backhoe day, isn't it? I go nuts when my link dies for a day or so; dealing with a multiday outage must be pretty irritating even if it is due to an "act of Tonka."

I thought metafilter was down all weekend, because I'm too lazy to type www.
