What happened to the @askmetafilter Twitter? February 19, 2014 1:26 PM   Subscribe

I'm pretty sure it's one of the unofficial Twitter accounts, but does anyone know what happened to the @askmetafilter feed? It looks like it stopped updating on the 5th. This feed was nice to have since it used the question title as the tweet rather than starting with the question itself like the @mefigreen feed. Thanks all.

@askmetafilter is the official feed. I'll take a look.

Sorry about the trouble. Looks like we had a technical glitch and it stopped working more silently than it should have. It's back on the air.

Oh, wow--it looks like it's back! Thanks, PB. I didn't realize that was official. So the official Twitter accounts are now @metafilter, @mefipopular, and @askmetafilter? Are there any other ones?
posted by jroybal at 1:39 PM on February 19, 2014

No, those three are it. @metafilter shows most of the same posts at @mefipopular but includes Best Of posts and some Status announcements too. I'm not sure how long we'll keep @mefipopular going. It's not as, er, popular.

We also have a similar Facebook page if you're more of a Facebook person.

Pretty certain it's my turn to say pb rocks this place. Thanks now and always!

OK, who's going to start @fakemetafilter?

OK, who's going to start @fakemetafilter?

I would do this. It would just suggest therapy and mindfulness meditation to everyone, every day, forever.

There is already kind of a mean spirited metafiltercomments twitter account. Idk what that's about.

Also call a doctor and whatever it is, eat it. ETMF.

I liked it well enough. It hasn't posted in a while, though.

it's a twitter account called Metafilter Comments (@MeFiComments)

First reaction: "Wow, this is a spot-on parody. Whoever's writing these really gets the culture of the site."

Then: "Wait, I remember seeing that one in a thread."

Followed by: "...ah, shit, they're real." Which does somehow make it seem more mean-spirited.

Hey wow cool I'm the second one in there! This is like the the other day when I was browsing jwz and he quoted a comment I wrote! It feels like fame but is actually the absence of that!

I'm in no way obsessed by it, but in the Facebook cover photo:

1) Who are the people? Are they MetaFilter users?
2) What are they laughing at?
3) Why is she pointing at him?
4) What sandwich is he finishing?
5) Why is the table so narrow?
6) Is the heavy-looking ring she is wearing on her thumb uncomfortable?
7) Is sandwich man the son of Ryan Stiles?
8) Is the box a takeout box?
9) Does it belong to headscratch man or sandwich man?
10) Who quickly drank at least half a pint of stout before others had drunk theirs?

1. JaiMahodara, Lutoslawski, Sibrax, and dersins. Yes.
2. How much dersins looks like Jason Bateman, probably.
3. Because "hey, look, it's Jason Bateman" wouldn't work as well without hand gestures.
4. Some sort of panini on ciabatta, I think. Eastburn makes pretty good sandwiches.
5. Because it's hard to find skateboards that are much wider than that.
6. She was in constant pain.
7. No, but he did write some ladder code for Fallout 3 that never got included in the released game, so.
8. Yes.
9. Maybe.
10. Possibly me, not pictured.

There was some Twitter speculation about which MeFite (or recent ex-MeFite) it was when they first started posting, but I guess we'll never know. Whoever it is follows a bunch of MeFites, which is also slightly unsettling.

I didn't think it was mean-spirited. Some of those comments are hilarious. I have no idea of the commenter or context, but this one made me do a lol:

I'm not totally sure what your intention was but now I want literally nothing more than a Blippity Boo at PJ O'Pootertoots.

That should be pretty easy to do. Wasn't there a Markov comment generator at some point?
posted by maryr at 1:26 PM on February 20, 2014

It might not have been Markov-related. I don't really know what that means. It just sounds technical-like. I have vague but painful memories of something called Markov chains from my Probabilistic Systems and Stochastic Processes class in college that I remember nothing else from but deep senses of futility, loathing, and stupidity.

But enough about me. How are you doing?
posted by maryr at 1:28 PM on February 20, 2014

Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?
