Is there any chance of getting a 'maximum length of a front-page post' limit implemented? Or at least have a suggestion to the poster that their post is a little long?

I was just on my way here to suggest that myself for some strange reason.

there's hardly any point in providing a link if you cut and paste most of it into the post.

send Corky and quarsan to the stocks.
and remove the copy/paste functions from their machines.
and kill them and grill them.

If people can resist the urge replying to the thread with their snarky messages about how corky could have selectively quoted or how the link is 2 years old, it will scroll off, and that'll be the end of it.

I don't mind if the person posting actually puts a fair amount into it, but when all they do is cut and paste, it annoys the hell out of me. I thought the general idea behind making the posts is that you link the site and give a description of it. Not you post the link and copy what they say on the website.

you know crunchland, as a purveyor of trash links myself, i can tell you that it doesn't matter a damn whether you saw the link 2 years ago or the author created a page 5 years ago or if stile linked it in the prehistoric era on stinky mimeographed paper. if i bitched everytime i saw something on mefi that i linked 2 years ago that's all i'd ever be posting about. the web, and the web's audience, are dynamic and changing with constant churn. you've been around a while, good for you. you've seen it before, good for you. someone links something you've seen already, skip it.

I like to hear them. Could we add some sort of reader system to Metafilter so I could just listen to it?
And maybe let us program certain voices for certain posters, so I would always know when, for example, I was hearing a Stavros post because suddenly it would sound like a wonderchicken or whatever voice I chose for him. Matt would have to sound like the voice of Old Testament God, or maybe just the Great and Powerful Oz. And for a really long front page post, it would just read the first sentence in an increasingly exasperated-sounding voice and then go "Yadda yadda yadda... Shaddup already will ya?! Chrisakes!"
Or is this that great new feature Matt is adding today or tomorrow?

crunchland, samson,
I don't think it's a crime to tell a relatively new member (only 2 links posted, he's a 13,000-plus user) how things are usually done on the FP.
Imagine every FPP being 40-lines long. We have about 30 FPP a day, it makes for a huge FP for no reason. It's bad editing and terrible usability. (Actually this is Corkys' second post, his first was very confusing, didn't even mention the city where the van had blown up).
and, if you can't handle a little snarkiness when you make a mistake, MeFi is not the place for you

I trimmed the post and will add some posting flags to the post page.
What I don't understand is how someone can come here to make a post, after seeing thousands of posts before it, and not noticing that most posts are short. Doesn't the person posting know that they're posting a lot in comparison to others and that might not be a good thing?

Well, crash...just for you angel, here's the original hamster dance, and the satanic hamster dance, the eric cartman hamster bash, the "shoot the hamster" dance, and of course...How the Hamster Dance Stole My Soul...without which no hamster dance linkage would be complete.
