117: Voting For Anarchy
 transcript  June 3, 2016 11:43 AM   Subscribe

This episode is jessamyn, me, and a collective inability to stay focused, as we discuss hiring frimble, choosing usernames, beverage routines, hidden double-reverse-sexism in Wikipedia charts, how to hand change to a customer, and also some stuff about MetaFilter. This episode covers May 3 through June 2 and runs just under two hours.

how to hand change to a customer

Oooh, I know! Is it dumping the change on the counter next to their outstretched hand?

(Why, movie theatre cashier, why!?)

Where is the ask about coins over bills for change?

The anarchy portion of that podcast overtook the note-taking part and so I haven't posted it yet.

I have yet to actually listen to a podcast, but I have strong opinions on how change should be handed to a customer.

The bill+coin question. I will trust y'all to remember whether you're on the green or in here when you choose how to answer.

My mind is breaking over the coin Ask going up after the podcast it's mentioned in. Do we have to listen first in order to answer? How do I what do I how.

I remember reading about it like twenty years ago, in Ann Landers or Dear Abby (or possibly Miss Manners or the horoscopes or the bridge column?), and the general consensus was that it was more polite and convenient to hand over the coins first and then the bills, but lots of cashiers did coins on top because shrug whatever.

It's especially nice if the cashier counts out the money as they hand it to you ("and that's four, five, ten, and twenty") but it's also slow.

Do not bunch, bundle, or bandy the currency.

Absolutely count it back, crinkle the stiff bills and a nice lite snap of a Franklin always let the customer know your alert and trading has commenced.

Voting.

For anarchy.

Something not right here...

Probably should listen to the podcast.

If anyone has time (from 2 minutes upwards, in fact) to join the effort to transcribe MeFi podcasts, led by Pronoiac, come join us! (Also: I'm only 14 minutes into the last one, time needs to slow down, please).

I also haven't listened the podcast yet so this might be mentioned in there but am jumping into the comments now so people who come to comment might see it...

My mind is a little bit blown that there is a person alive today that was born in the 1800s, and moreover, that she is the only such person, the sole living survivor of the 1800s. What a weird and strange honor.

My fingerprints are all over whippedy doo!!! I'm happy for it to live in the past.

I will trust y'all to remember whether you're on the green or in here when you choose how to answer.

My answer is to:

1. Realize having bills of different denominations be the same size and color is a really bad idea as it makes counting change much harder
2. Enact appropriate change on a national level
3. Use the method of your choice to solve the now drastically simplified problem

I understand this goes on the green, right?

Oh wow, my piece was mentioned on the podcast! Just a note, the offer to create melodies based on usernames (or any other piece of information like birthdays -- basically any collection of characters) still stands. And the melody is generated for a poem fragment from Sappho (the earliest woman composer/poet I could find information about) and was created for the July By Women MeFiMusic challenge. This poem fragment is all that exists today from whatever that particular larger work was. We only have one complete poem from her but a bunch of fragments like this one. I tried to make the music as accurate to Ancient Greek Music Theory as I could.

I always thought the "left luggage" emoji was actually super-secure luggage, like the kind spies handcuff to themselves. Can't see that one getting much use, either, though.

Thanks for mentioning Link Finding Things!

The reason it went on hiatus is because it's a pretty resource-intensive bot at least for one running on a tiny VPS that has like 20 other bots on it. It replies to people's tweets, and in doing so, it ended up having to generate a lot of images, using a lot of memory, and getting its child processes killed a lot, in addition to just using up a lot of resources. (And the way it generates images is not the most efficient, a trade-off that saves development time). A queuing system's been worked out, though, and it's back!

…which reminds me – I meant to do the image rendering efficiently, way at the beginning and totally forgot about that. I should get back to that! Also I should go to sleep

If you like, you can see how IBM Watson transcribes the first 20 minutes of the podcast. It's a wall of text, a bit more coherent than Google's take of another episode.

Baseboard vacuum! Closest I've ever been to getting mentioned on the podcast!

Forget the (no-)cabal, do what I do. Travel back in time a decade or so, generate some vaguely musical noises, post them in the here-and-now. Instant namedrop, solved problem.
posted by comealongpole at 4:22 PM on June 6, 2016

I do actually have Opinions about the content of the podcast, but I'd have to re-listen in a notetaking-friendly environment to respond as I'd wish. Speaking of notes though, coins on top is totally fine IMHO. This may be skewed by the relative value/encounter-frequency of the $1 bill and the lowest UK note being worth $7.2 dollars-ish. Ubiquitous 69p-equiv notes would drive me much mad(der).

Baseboard vacuums! We have those. I don't think you'd have them without a central vac, since they're kind a no-brainer option for that. With the central vac you have a pipe running through your house, to a couple of outlets where you plug in the hose. The canister is in the garage or basement. Since the pipe is there anyway it's trivial to put in some baseboard vacuums so you can quickly suck up crap in the kitchen or mudroom.

I grew up with a central vacuum and just kind of thought that was a normal thing. I didn't even use a regular vacuum until I had my own place. So when we were looking for a vac for our new place it just made sense to go with central.

Anyway, baseboard vacuums are as neat as you think they are.

Carry on.

I don't have a commute anymore, so I've been listening while doing dishes. It's the 24th, and I'm 80% of the way through. Just realizing a 120-minute podcast can last a month if you listen to four minutes a day!

Super chuffed to hear cortex liked the song! Like a lot of songs, I always figure it's just going into the void once it's done.

A Cuidado/Caution horror movie would be a prime opportunity for a monster with two heads, each of which that speaks a different language. Now that I think about it, surprised Sesame Street didn't already do that.
