#keepmefiweird April 29, 2016 9:58 AM   Subscribe

Inspired by Greg Nog's comment in an earlier MeTa, I want to suggest Keep MeFi Weird May.

All you have to do is post weird shit. It doesn't have to be new, it doesn't have to be comprehensible, it doesn't need to inspire conversation or debate and you don't even need to particularly understand what you're posting. It can be something you stumbled onto and don't know the origin of. It can be something you think a million people have seen before but you still want to share with MeFi because it's just far-out. The whole point is to make things around here a little weirder and maybe get more people to post stuff just because, instead of posting with a goal in mind.

A YouTube video, an off-the-wall Reddit post, some stuff from Tumblr or Twitter, something pulled from the Old Web of newsgroups and Geocities websites, anything goes! There's no length requirements or content requirements, just that you, the poster, thinks is odd or strange or weird or interesting in some ill-defined and alienating way.

Forget what you think expected house style is for FPPs. Throw self-consciousness out the window. Don't think about the response your post will get. This isn't a call for finely-crafted comprehensive megaposts that show off your erudition and educate the populace. This is for that grainy third-hand video you see on your phone and immediately call over your friend because holy shit check this out.

I like this and am pro-weirdness. More neat weird stuff on the front page!

I will make one boring responsible adult disclaimer here that sometimes weird shit might land badly and get deleted, and that's part of the process of posting on MetaFilter and is not a big deal.

did someone say weird social justice post?

Social Justice = I JAIL STUCCOES

Traditional stucco is made of lime, sand, and water.

*Modern*, hegemonic, stucco is made of Portland cement, sand, and water which, as everyone knows is controlled by nestle these days.

Lime is added to increase the permeability and workability of modern stuccco, which is good because alkalinized materials help the body's natural energies from coming out of whack with all the EM radiation emitted by the black helicopters and ted cruz's sovereign citizen contract with pfizer and lil' debbie.

Sometimes fascistic additives such as acrylics and glass fibers are added to improve the structural properties of the stucccco - which is a polymeric boot on the face for the artisinal appropriation of traditional materials to make siding for our narwhal jails.

Stuccccccoing with these newfangled flangewibbets is usually done with what is considered a one-coat stuccccccco system ghlahrble, as opposed to the traditional three-coat pftuiii method, hastening capitalism's robot-enabled takeover of what was chhththong once a good side-income for today's emisirated proletariat.

In summary, do not get me started on plaster and mortar.

While visiting the historic Mount Vernon estate last week, I learned that George Washington had the buildings put up with wood exteriors, and then tarted them up to look like stone. They cut verticals into the boards to mimic the edges of stone blocks, then painted them gray and threw sand on them to change the surface profile.

And I must say that the effect is damn near perfect, too...exept when the paint starts to peel after a couple hundred years.

a thought from someone who never much saw the point in Weird Al.

My issue being, that would be like Monty Python having called itself Funny Python, or Weird Python. Maybe it's an American vs English thing (of which we Canadians are oft stuck in the middle), but I can't help but object to being told how I'm supposed to think about something. So yeah, I think I'd rate Weird Al higher if he'd just tagged himself Al Yankovic.

Which is my long way of suggesting that I think weird works best when it's not tagged as such. It just is.
posted by philip-random at 5:30 PM on April 29, 2016 [1 favorite]

Maybe he's not telling us to think he's weird; maybe it's just how he sees himself and we are left to arrive at our own conclusions.

Overall I get your point to an extent - like I get the same reaction when people describe themselves or others as "random". At the same time, I am largely grateful for these descriptors, such as "scary movie" or "speed metal", even though these descriptors are also subjective, like "weird". I gain a greater understanding of what those appelations mean, and I have some degree of knowledge of what to expect if I encounter them again, so I can choose to avoid or pursue at will. And in a Metafilter context of trying to encourage people to use a month to make posts of a particular stripe, some kind of general label for that stripe is pretty helpful.

It's like those pins that say "Why Be Normal" (which always seem to lack terminal punctuation). Nobody is more normal than the people who put these pins on their messenger bags.

But then I worry that no one will be interested, or that all I'll come up with is a bunch of movie trailers, and it won't even be a comprehensive list because I forgot to include The Witch's Hammer, or something. Is there a way to workshop a post before you, er, post it?

So I've just spent 30 minutes watching fluids explode out of various parts of people's bodies (including a few I didn't think it was possible for zits to form on) for naught. Le sigh. I hate this old/memory thing.

The philip-random thing does go way back to the early 1980s when random still just meant random as in "... the lack of pattern or predictability in events.[1]" Not the more recent "... buzzword used amongst mindless teenagers as a way of showing just so utterly irreverent their predictable sense of humour is" ...

But yeah, whatever. Decisions create consequences. And thus point taken.
