I seem to fail at either remembering or googling July 20, 2016 3:41 AM   Subscribe

There's a comment that was made on either the grey or the blue, many years ago. I'd like to use (and attribute) it, but either my memory or my google-fu is failing.

The context was a discussion about telling people they were stupid for liking particular things (I forget what). The comment was something along the lines of:
Sometimes when somebody tells you they like a thing you just have to take their word for it. Not everybody had the benefit of being exposed to Propagandhi and Negativland at an early age.
I'm pretty sure I've got the general form (but probably not exact phrasing) of the second sentence correct, I'm positive that Negativland was one of the examples, and reasonably confident that Propagandhi was the other. I'm not sure I've got the first sentence correct beyond having the gist of it.

Anybody able to hope a MeFite out?

I feel like maybe it was related to this thread?

Possibly this, from a post on "cultural dealbreakers"?

The book snobbery thing ("I won't whatever with people who don't read") really gets to me. There's a whole group of lovely people out there who for various reasons books have just not resonated with, and I think the only reason it seems acceptable to say none of them are worth knowing is because books are the ultimate cultural status symbol. It is incredible narrow-minded that people can't imagine someone like this. Not everyone's inner life is expressed and accessed in the same way.

If not, something else on that page? Negativland pops up in the thread, just not in that particular comment.

I'm sorry, but anyone who can't remember the exact wording of that comment is dead to me, subhuman, a garbage person.

Joseph, you're not helping.

Might've been something from this thread too.

Hmmm, none of those. FWIW, thinking about timing it was at least 5 years ago.

And now having waded through every mention of Negativland that google can find on site:metafilter.com I'm wondering if perhaps it was somewhere else.

Add a "Negativeland" misspelling to your search?

Chocolate Pickle, this isn't Ask so helpful isn't a comment requirement.

Not "helping" maybe but definitely 'helping' or perhaps *helping*

I seem to remember it was fugazi or something like that. This search needs a lookup table of the names of all the coolest bands from the 80's and 90's.

Maybe it was pavement?

Seriously thought I REMEMBER THIS COMMENT TOO arrrtrggghg.

June 6th 2011 would have been nearly exactly 5 years ago too.

Me too. I'm positive people have namechecked Merzbow for this reason.

Annika Cicada - I don't think so, but perhaps? If so my memory's even worse than I thought, but that's not out of the question.

Gah, this is itching at me too. Specifically, this bit, "Sometimes when somebody tells you they like a thing you just have to take their word for it", feels really familiar. It also feels familiar in an actually-pretty-recently sort of way; I'd guess earlier this year for whatever thread I read it in, and I'm guessing from dimly-remembered context that it was specifically a discussion of a band and fandom, so probably a more recent or current act that's got a little bit of apparent indie/difficult quality but would be easy to deconstruct from a purist/historical perspective as owing debts to or not doing their difficult thing as well as older examplars of the genre/style/whatever.

Which is a lot of "maybe that's what I remember" to load onto an itch, and I'm having no luck searching either.
