jbickers has passed away September 29, 2016 12:27 PM   Subscribe

Sad news this morning: long-time mefite jbickers has passed away at 45. Here's an obituary from WFPL, one of the Louisville public radio stations he'd worked for.

For ten years jbickers has been a familiar presence on the site, chatting and goofing around in the comments and posting a lot of interesting stuff to the front page besides; he was a regular in MetaTalk, often helping organize or signal-boost fun MeFi-centric activities or just advocating some kindess; he posted a lot of varying serious and silly radio and game and art stuff to Projects, and even a little bit of music; after years of traditional radio experience, he used MeFi to help him find his way into podcasting in the last few years.

He was very much the sort of MeFite that makes MetaFilter a good place to be, and he'll be missed terribly. My condolences to everyone in the MetaFilter community who knew him.

I had the pleasure to meet him and his family, and play Ticket to Ride with them in their kitchen not too long ago. It was a lovely time, and my heart just goes out to the whole family, wife, kids, and pets. He was a beloved voice on Louisville public radio, and I am sad I didn't get to know him better. He will be missed.

I had a few drinks with him (and a couple of other MeFites) a bunch of years back when my wife and I visited Louisville. I can't claim to have known him very well, but every impression I got of him then, and after, was that he was a good man who loved his family.

My heart kinda fell out of listening to Morning Edition when he stopped hosting the local feed in the morning, because I always liked to chime back "Good Morning, Mr. Bickers!" as he said good morning.

Now my heart's kinda fell out in general. What a terrible thing to befall such a warm person.

James posted a few really great AskMe's, but one of the things I remember most about his posts here was his memory of Dave Brubeck.

Another of his radio bits was a constant banter with a media critic here in town, CD Kaplan (culturemaven.com). Acerbic repartee between guys who clearly like each other is good radio.

Another great James on the Radio memory...

When he'd introduce this song (when it was moderately popular), he'd always deadpan that it was his favorite song before hitting play.

We were paired up in the MeFi CD swap several years ago. When I saw this post today, I got a little teary when I remembered a message I sent him after I received his CD in the mail.
----------------
Hey . . .

Just wanted to say: I was having a super crappy, crappy morning today. It was foggy, I was grumpy, everything was awful. On my way out the door, I randomly grabbed the MeFi Swap CD I received in the mail yesterday (from you!).

I started listening once I got into my car. I'm not sure what it was, but your mix completely turned my day around. Really truly. By the time I got to work, I was ready for the day and in a considerably brighter mood.

So, yay, and thanks!

I want to cry, and I want to go out and do something really kind. Maybe 3 things.

The world is missing another important member (so grateful for their contributions here, and so sorry to loved ones for this terrible loss). Once again I am reminded to tell people how they have impacted my/the world when I still can (and how it can hurt when I haven't).
Thank you for talking about death and the Metafilter community and sharing this Cortex.

Way too young. I know him by his presence here because I would often read a comment and nod my head in agreement or appreciation and then look at the author, commonly it read: posted by jbickers.

He was such a constant, wonderful presence here. This is horrible.

Dutifully cueing up some Rush so that I can listen in tribute.

He was amongst our best. A kind, consistent, thoughtful contributor. I will miss his presence greatly. Please pass on any news of charities he supported, or would like supported in his memory, or donations, or any way one could help the family from afar.

While not knowing him personally, jbickers was certainly one of those well-recognized and respected names one comes to know here. Seeing "jbickers" as someone who favorited a post of yours was always a welcome sign of approval, or, at least, a signal that you did something right for once.

Shall be missed greatly.

Oh my... I just found now the Talk post he made last year in which he mentions liking my game posts. It was right there on the front page and apparently I didn't see it.

I think I'm going to be sad for a while. Thank a bunch, jbickers. I didn't know you very well, but I know that I miss you.
