Global meetup day! July 30, 2002 8:04 AM   Subscribe

T-minus-one week until the MetaFilter Meetup. Let's have one reference thread where we can post solely the City, Location and Time. I would save discussion for e-mail or something like this. Meetup still, to my knowledge, hasn't changed any of the suggested locations due to requests or "here's where we're going to meet, whether you like it or not"s. Amid the confusion (1,2), we need clarity. This will hopefully also be good enough for Matt to post to the sidebar for the non-MeTa people. I'll start, and remember, nice, simple, and clean...

Don't you dare. I've been looking forward to getting a Happy Meal for like 3 weeks now!!!

No idea. I say we go back to Santa Monica. That place was quite nice.

If it's fine with everybody else, it's fine with me, let's just decide and say so, i've already arranged my work schedule.

MANHATTAN

Sigh. I hate bars. But I reluctantly accept, having no other viable options. Thanks for stepping up and being the man for us, witchstone. I'll make up an invitation with the specifics and send it to all the people who were on the list for the last Manhattan gathering.

Mr. Izer, sir -- might want to include the folks on the "meetup" list, as well. I'm *sure* the two lists greatly overlap, but just in case...

If ya need help, let me know!

How does work out for us newbies? Is there a moratorium in effect until the next meetup, or do you have some arcane MeFi hazing ritual for just such an occasion?
posted by Smart Dalek at 7:30 PM on July 30, 2002

so far it looks like we have:

Dallas
D.C.
Los Angeles
Manhattan
San Francisco

any other groups getting together? we'll have to put together a MeFi photo album. i say "we" meaning "somebody other than me."

We've got plans for a digital camera at the Dallas meet. Bonus gold stars for any group that sets up a webcam!

LONDON:

Well, I'd prefer Oxford, but that didn't work out last time, so... any suggestions?

i_cola, where are you?

I can't make it anywhere in a week, but I'm going to be in Montreal for Sept and Oct. Any Montreal or Ottawa Mefiosos want to get together?

LONDON:

dash_slot: Brighton ;-)

I didn't sign up originally 'cos I thought I'd be otherwise engaged but now I'm not.

We're looking at the West End I s'pose...food?...outside?...on the river?

Random pub suggestion: 3 Kings (?) at Clerkenwell Green. Random food suggestion: Little Bay, off Kilburn High Road. Random number suggestion: 483337

LOS ANGELES I wasn't at the last meetup, but I'm all for wherever it was everyone met last time in Santa Monica. Citywalk??? F that.

Kafkaesque, do you remember where it was in Santa Monica? I live there, so I have a few suggestions:

For Main Street, I'm all for Food & Beer, which would mean O'Briens, the Library, or Finn McCool's (a nice pub with an unfortunately stupid name). I like all three, it might a little tough to get a table for all of us at the Library. If we want to go a little more south, into Venice itself, there's the Whaler on Washington. They have a great deck overlooking the ocean.

For the Promenade and environs, there's always Ye Olde King's Head. Good stuff on tap, and a pretty good atmosphere. There's also Swingers over on Lincoln if we want to visit the hipster Denny's. Hell, there's all kinds of places around 3rd.

There's another O'Briens up on Wilshire and 23rd. Better than Sonny McLanes farther up the street.

All right, LA MeFites...let's talk amongst ourselves, as it has been decided that Meetup's suggestion (Citywalk??? sucks ass.

The one with the deck sounds good, RakDaddy. Of course, we're going to have to come to a concensus purty soon.

Renee's Courtyard Cafe (Map)
522 Wilshire Blvd (at 5th St)
Santa Monica, CA

That was the place in Santa Monica. It's right off of 5th at Wilshire so there's parking all up and down the Promenade. The weather's nice there these days (unlike CityWalk which is in the Valley where it's hotter than fried ass). The place was very cool. Little bar with a lot of space. waxpancake hooked up a little room for us, which probably won't be needed on a Tuesday night. I'm up for anywhere else in SM.
posted by eyeballkid at 9:45 AM on August 2, 2002

I suppose we can hunt down email addresses and try to work something out. We've got the weekend to try and hook it up. It's not that many people.

dude, it's not that bad. he chose a nice one for me last time.
posted by eyeballkid at 10:24 AM on August 2, 2002

I've never been to Renee's, but I've heard good things about it. Plus it's within staggering distance from home. I'm in. And things are slow right now, so I'd have no problems pulling down addresses from people on Meetup and telling 'em.

And, hell. Which dress am I going to wear now?
posted by RakDaddy at 11:43 AM on August 2, 2002

That tight little red number. I love you in that.
posted by Kafkaesque at 12:05 PM on August 2, 2002

All right, Kafkaesque. But only for you.

So, should we just make an executive decision and declare Renee's is the place?
posted by RakDaddy at 12:14 PM on August 2, 2002

hell, if not, i'm going there anyway. hate. city. walk.
posted by eyeballkid at 12:45 PM on August 2, 2002

Why the hell not?
posted by Kafkaesque at 1:00 PM on August 2, 2002

It's settled then. Citywalk can go hang. We're going to Renee's. And I'm wearing that tight little red number. Better go shave my legs...

I'll update my comment on Meetup and dig up email for everyone who's on the list. Sound good?

LOS ANGELES

For those of you following at home, we are staging a coup and overthrowing Meetup's oppressive (and incredibly) ass venue. We will now be meeting at

Renee's Courtyard Cafe, 522 Wilshire Blvd (at 5th St) Santa Monica, CA. Same time, same date. Better venue.

And I'm pretty sure it's "You're the man now, dog!" But whatever.

Actually, i_cola, I may be visiting friends in Forest Row [it's about 25 miles from Brighton...] around that time [Tuesday]: possible meet up there? We seem to be the only MeFites in England responding in this thread.... send me an email!
