Most Popular Song 15 Years Ago: "HOW YOU REMIND ME" - Nickelback November 8, 2017 5:43 PM   Subscribe

I noticed that I just passed my 15th anniversary on Metafilter, and I imagine I can't be the only one. Congrats to all you other old geezers.

The traditional gift is crystal.

There are four days and 104 users between us leotrotsky. I wonder if anyone still active is in between us.

I was quite surprised to see there were a 1000 users between us and only about 6 weeks. My 15 was up on Sunday.

My God. We joined up on the same day. What happened there? I thought that there were only about 5 new memberships available each day at that point, but clearly I was wrong.

I always thought 17kers were the most hard-to-categorize MeFites, encompassing those of us who were the last to sign up before membership closed in November 2002, the very first of the $5 newbs who came in the door in November 2004, and those mysterious souls who somehow found their way to membership in the interim.

Looking back into the mists of time, yea, to a geologic era when people still listened to post-grunge, I have no idea what motivated me to sign up then or why I'm still here now. But "hi" anyway!

I was eyeing the signup page for what felt like a year waiting for that little window to open up. It felt like a real coup when I finally got in the door.

Still disappointed I never got into File Pile. :-(

My 15th was last year.

This is the 2nd oldest account on the web still in use for me. The oldest is actually Yahoo - and only because it is tied to my flickr account.

That's me! I was lurking for a couple years during the moratorium, and joined around the same time gmail started b/c a user between here and monkeyfilter signed me up for both. I was out of the country with no home internet so I couldn't get to the site during the limited time window.

That was a long time ago!

Though Billboard ranked "How You Remind Me" as the number one song of 2002, it was actually released in 2001. But due to it's massive airplay, it's also often considered the most played song of the entire decade.

The single was also only the second time a song by a Canadian group hit #1 on the US charts. The first time - "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

You may also not have heard the cover version from Avril Lavigne (Chad Kroeger's separated wife), released in 2012.

Yeah, it’s crazy that this has been such an enduring part of my life. I mean, if I’d had to guess in 2002, I would have put my money on Plastic or Kuro5hin lasting longer. They had threading.

I was waiting on a different story
This time I'm mistaken
For handing you
A heart worth breaking

After all these years of Nickelback jokes, I still have no idea what they sound like or even what genre they play. I plan to stay this way as long as I can.

Alright, I looked up the video on YouTube and listened to it so know I know what they sound like. Are you happy now? Not really something that I'd want to listen to again but mostly just boring, not horrible.
