What is the policy on giving away usernames? January 25, 2005 9:25 AM   Subscribe

What is the policy on giving away usernames? I purchased a spare during the Great November Influx and now its just sitting there, rotting on Matt's server. I really have no use for it. It was an impulse buy and I'd like to give it away.

I'll give you $4.95. Oh wait I'm already in. Hah. :)

Well if you know someone GNFTI, please drop me an email. It's free. I'd never think of charging for it.

Just playing. I'll keep my eyes open.

Addendum: The username is "ITheCosmos", a throwback from my Big Star fanboyism. So and Big Star/Alex Chilton fans may appreciate it.

Give it to quonsar, as it may come in handy. ;-)

Give it to bunnyfire, as it may come in handy. ;-)

Bunnyfire doesn't need it. ;-)

"Need" is a funny word in this context.

(Oh, great. Usernames are the new gmail invites.)

I think we all should put our user names and passwords in a hat, and draw them randomly. Or maybe some random username/password generator for 4/1 so we can "play" another MeFite for one day.

I bet "quonsar" would fetch a pretty penny on ebay.

Someone should make a Metafilter user account spooler.

Is the influx over? Are signups still open?

If you haven't used the name before, it seems just like a MeFi gift-card. What's the issue?

Actually it's slightly used ( 2 comments to MetaTalk) but that's it. So in essence, the mag stripe is slightly worn. If anyone knows of an unfortunate soul who has yet to taste the magic that is MetaFilter, please let me know and I'll give it a way.

If signups are still open, isn't this just taking $5 out of Matt's pocket?
posted by stupidsexyFlanders at 11:51 AM on January 25, 2005

well, no. the name was already purchased. matt already got his $5 for it.

Since there doesn't seem to be a hard, fast policy against it, I just gave it away. Matt, if this is a problem, please let me know. The fiver is no big deal.

I, uh, have an extra lying around, too. With a 14k user number. Email me.

14k? That'll drive the price up. Everybody wants to be a 14ker.

OK, I got an email from somebody interested (sorry Kevin, didn't mean to steal your customer.) Should I post an announcement when the deed is done?

Go for it, I can't wait to meet this "God" you speak of.
