in retrospect the thing where we said "no curses no whammies" may have been lost to the pre-roll edit, which i guess qualifies as one final curse and/or whammy after all

I imagine that jessamyn is going to be getting an influx of Quip toothbrushes sent to her as gifts.

I sort of wish that was how it works, but it so rarely does

Ooh, a post of mine made the podcast! I'll definitely have to give this one a listen.

I think it's from an old game show called Press Your Luck?

I realize I said "androgynous zones" instead of "erogenous zones." I am fine with this.

Glad to hear that cortex is at least looking into an ad or 2 for the Podcast.

I don't know that jessamyn will get toothbrushes, but if I should ever happen across a llama x-ray...

In regards to "Thirst Account", I see it as an evolution from having a "hunger for attention" to "thirst for attention" to posting things on twitter/instagram/whatever to get likes and favs to slake that thirst; therefore a Thirst Account is one that's used to get a lot of positive feedback by posting cute pictures, tasty food, witty remarks, and so forth.

This is great; I was just thinking last night about how Septembers always seem to be reliably stressful (including shingles a few years ago). Apparently it's because I'm a Virgo.

Hey, just occurred to me you guys don't talk about Fanfare! Why not?
posted by bq at 1:32 PM on September 3, 2019 [1 favorite]

I go in and out of using FanFare, though I really should have talked about it this time because I started watching a show that everyone else watched years ago. but it was fun to get to dip into threads and see what other MeFites had to say and spam their Recent Activity with my various impressions.
posted by jessamyn (retired) at 2:12 PM on September 3, 2019 [1 favorite]

I often don't find a lot of time to engage with FanFare genres of media outside of slowly working an episode or two at a time through older TV stuff in the evening, and then making the time to go find and re-engage with older threads about that stuff where it exists is a habit I haven't built up enough. Basically it's a me thing, not a FanFare thing, but if I haven't actually mucked around in FanFare that month I may not have anything to say.

I'd like to get into the habit of checking in on the new GBBO season, and the new Terrace House season when it starts, to have an excuse/reminder to go pop in weekly about stuff.

I feel compelled to defend 155 because every number has something to recommend it.

If you want to build a house of cards 10 levels high, you need 155 cards.

This is a silly fact that I don't expect anyone else to care about. But I really like the snub square tiling (and use it for my profile picture here and elsewhere). My icon is just a small section of that tiling; here's a larger region- a circle-ish thing where all the points are within a fixed number of line segments of some central point. If you form the region reachable within 30 line segments of a central point, your region would have 155 points.

Small note about an existing pony that might kick-start activity in Jobs - letting people post multiple "position wanted" posts, or letting people update their existing one. What's the status of that?
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 5:53 AM on September 5, 2019

Aside from "dryer core" (which I'd seen in the Ask), I thought I heard the name of a new nerdy music genre in this episode: "technical debt metal." Which I thought was fantastic and made me wonder if it would be the official genre to play during work. But of course it's actually technical death metal - interesting but not quite the same.

For a not-at-all-high-priority item (so many other things that would be more important), how about putting the map on IRL (rather than, or in addition to Jobs)? It'd be neat to see all the meetups/events on a map and give a visual sense of the global reach of MeFi meetups.

Did not expect that the loudest laugh for me would be from "Let's talk about my Sony VAIO!"

Thanks for another enjoyable podcast roundup.

i hereby declare that Technical Debt Metal is a subgenre of chiptunes/circuitbending where you intentionally overload the CPU with too many layers of function call abstraction so it can't render audio at full-speed and instead creates a slowed-down drone synthemetal full of unreproducible hiccups and filter malfunctions

I really, really, really do not have time this month to explore latency as an art form. Introducing the idea is just mean.

Also, the podcast made me wonder if this existed. I'm delighted to find that it does.
