193: What was previously my discretionary time August 14, 2023 1:05 PM   Subscribe

cortex has a new job and was hard to track down and we had a few months of missing each other. We found some time on August 14th and tried to play catch-up. Runs about 97 minutes.

How had I not heard about Jessamyn's new job?

Also, great to see the podcast is back!

It was really nice to get back to yammering! This has absolutely been one of the most potent "wait, how is it...August?" stretches I've experienced in a long time.

Yes, this was a nice Rip Van Winkling! I was heartened to see this pop up in my podcast app.

Another Forged in Fire fan!!!

I dipped in and out of the podcast and had trouble finding the moment when cortex and jessamyn discussed the fundraiser -- could someone share a timecode?

Sounds great except very loud mouse scrolling sounds!

And I’ve just got the part where Josh says he’s using a webcam mic so maybe it’s that!

Romanian?! Jessamyn, may I ask why you picked it up in the first place? It seems an unusual choice. I mean, I know a little, but only because my wife is from Romania.

Yep, basically we decided to podcast at a free-time space that opened up but it didn't give cortex time to find his usual mic. His headset mic kept dropping out, so this was the third choice and yes, mouse scrolling sounds will not be a feature of future podcasts. Very sorry!

Romanian?! Jessamyn, may I ask why you picked it up in the first place?

I lived in Cluj-Napoca with my then-husband from 1994 through 1995 when he was working for a group called the Civic Education Project. He was teaching political science at Babeș-Bolyai University and I got a sort of "partner job" (in that they tried to find jobs for the partners) teaching internet skills to Romanian journalists with the Gannet-funded Freedom Forum. I taught people how to use Gopher! And email via a VAX. We learned Romanian when we were there because even though some people spoke English, many people didn't. And then I never really used it again for nearly 30 years and thought, in the interests of brain plasticity, it might be fun to try to get back into, and it has been. It serves no practical purpose other than that.

And I’ve just got the part where Josh says he’s using a webcam mic so maybe it’s that!

Yeah, man, what a different sonic environment that is than the close-miking I'm used to. Part of the problem with the mystery of the misplaced mic is that in March as I was starting a new job I finally really deconstructed my long-time MeFi workspace on my desk, retired my iMac from daily use to make space for new work setup, and switched all my personal browsing over to my gaming computer so that I'd have a clean separation between work and personal for the first time in a very long time. Which was a good healthy idea, but it also has meant lots of weird computer/browser migration headaches (not just different computer but OSX to Windows) and also I put a *lot* of stuff that had been in my office...somewhere?

I'll find that mic eventually, I think the sound quality is better that way and in any case I'm way more comfortable having more control over the ambient noises going onto tape.
