Is a Single Product Link Okay? October 1, 2002 9:10 PM   Subscribe

So a single product link (that's been linked before) is okay now? Or is it only because its "benbrown"? Curious.

Yes, it's okay. And [celebrity] is sick, sicker, dying, dead. And Google changing their front page's DOCTYPE. And anything Apple does, especially if it's a rushed beta only released because they don't want to further piss off their rabid userbase which they're increasingly alienating by appropriating Microsoft's tactics, but without the effort of well-crafted doublespeak.

Hands up. Who just can't be bothered anymore?

But anyway. It's a new tech toy, and people are going to want to yak about it. If somebody can't be bothered to find a substantial link, we'll just have to hope somebody in the thread can.

it was a weak link, but a product everyone has been looking forward to. A few posts back there was a weak link to a tv show's homepage, which should also be frowned upon, but deleting it may be going too far, since people want to talk about both.

So yeah, it kind of sucks, but it's not sucky enough to ax.

Honestly, I feel the same way about all the "Israelis kill Palestinians" links (and vice versa.)

So Matt, any chance of you laying the smackdown on Ben next time you see him? Looks to me like you could take him, at least from that crappy picture he posted. Maybe you could get him to put his super-gadget on auto-timer and you could do a pseudo-webcast of you punting him around the room for posting a semi-sucky link. That would be worth getting a Paypal account for.

Wow, do I win the prize for "Most Hyphenated Sentence in a Post"?

No owillis, the whole point of the link is not so much the hiptop. Didn't you hear? benbrown is the FIRST OWNER IN AUSTIN, IN REAL LIFE. OH MY GOD.

It smacks of a cockfest for nerds. A wireless, web-enabled, multi-colored, blah blah blah cockfest to its credit though. I just don't understand how this can spark conversation. People read about it, drool over the new features, and want to have one, end forum. Doesn't that make it both a poor link and poor conversation fodder?

ah, this thread is amusing enough to make the original link worth it. the two taglines are priceless.

I want to see a cage-match - benbrown versus mathowie, with the winner to take on Steven Den Beste...to the death!

Failing that, a pony. Or the head of Alfredo Garcia would do, in a pinch.

on a similar vein (to the main post here), why wasn't this meta thread deleted?

and for the record this everyone (ew look at him in the corner - doesn't even own a mobile phone) couldn't give a damn about new gadgets either.

these are only suggestions. i appreciate all the work matt does here and think mefi an excellent site.

I don't see a problem with the release being posted here. I have been reading about it for what, three years (?)* Yeah I find the release interesting.

We have follow-up threads for news items all the time--how is this any different, really? As much as I love reading about the mother who pummeled her kid in the Kohl's parking lot (no, really?), I don't see why she gets three or four threads in a ten-day period with little complaint, yet this gadget post crops up six months after the original and the post gets taken to MeTa. criminey.

Next in MetaTalk: breathing--is it really necessary? You know, I can hear the air going in and out of your nose, over and over ... just knock it off, ok? Oh, and you type too loud.

*good morning*

I just wish the link had been to the actual product (w/ info and a photo). I wasn't about to spend a bunch of time hunting around that awful site just to see what the hell the product was (I still don't know).

(I still don't know.)

It's the Danger HipTop, and I find it amusing that they explicitly list "Blog" among its many abilities. Know thy target demographic.

the product was the thing that *was* linked to (after the blah-de-blah with the location info and stuff), it just wasn't named as such in the post ... it is called "a hiptop" i suppose (laptop, palmtop, asstop, etc), but the product name is "Sidekick" (and didn't seem to mention the more generic hiptop moniker on the page).

confusing, yes?

er, *is* the thing that *was* linked to.

i don't suppose it still is, is it?
posted by fishfucker at 10:07 AM on October 2, 2002

fishfucker - that's beacuse T-Mobil, in their infinite wisdom (I -hate- that company!) decided that HipTop wasn't cool enough, even though I think it's an excellent name to build a brand on, esp. for the target demographic.
