Pony: dates and times in post citations January 22, 2001 11:49 AM Subscribe
I might just be, you know, a little slow, but more than once in recent days I have been cruising the MeFi front page and gotten lost, and had to scroll up (and up and up) to find the date header... perhaps it will soon be time to consider putting dates along with the times in the "posted by" footer on the front page.
You can probably ditch "PST" and put an "All times in PST" somewhere. It may ease some clutter.
Umm... I'm not exactly sure where though. :-)
Better yet, make it a user preference, I don't really even think about when something was posted, if it's an active thread it's an active thread.

Maybe it could just be consolidated, and tied in with the prefs for date/time layout?
ie:

And I as a user could dictate how the time/date appears, including raw UTC. ;)

I know it's another data nugget to be wedged onto the front page, but for me at least, it'd be worth it.
I guess it could be made a configurable preference, but I too have some fear of pushing your patience over the edge, Matt ("i GIVE and i GIVE and i GIVE and they JUST WANT MORE"), so, you know. either way, no biggie. :)

Matt, will you buy me a pony? I'll take real good care of it, and I will ride it everyday.

Thanks thirteen, you just made me squirt coffee out my nose. Real cool.....
Seriously though. I tend to spend enough time here that I know the post dates for the threads by heart. I thought it was that way for everybody. This sounds like overkill to me.

bah, "i thought it was that way for everybody" is the enemy of all user interface designers everywhere, just as a pretty broad generality, I think.
but by hanging on this thread today, as I am, I'm making a mockery of the notion that I'm not always here often enough to see every thread the instant it's posted, so off I go.

Yeah, I remember when I used to say that...
Those were the days, really. The bliss of ignorance. When visiting MetaFilter caused a rush that hightened my day, rather than just returning my body chemistry to a level at which I could merely function.
I've tried going cold turkey. You haven't experienced hell until you've had hallucinations of the blue world, with the "Post a Comment" demon laughing maniacally as you claw your way up the posts. Trying, always trying, to escape, only to have yet another post added, just on top, always in front.
No, damn you, I get my MeFi first! First me, then if there's any MeFi left maybe I'll let you hit the page.

Death to the PST MeFi hegemony! That's always driven me crazy. It's an Eastern Time Zone world. (Yes, I'm being parochial. Bite me, it's fun!) Or at the very least, make it UTC. Talk about Americanism being the unstated norm, and only the other end of it, at that. ;)

Everything is stored in PST because the server's clock is sitting in PST. If I was forward thinking when I first built the site, everything would have been stored in GMT (the only one true time, heh), and then I'd perform operations per preferences to properly offset (it's fairly straightforward, but there are newfoundland and central australian zones that are 30 minutes off, and they can be a real pain).
But yeah, one of these days, I'll support more time zones.
I could add more interface tweaks, those suggested above seem really clear.
