Email addresses with weird characters?

Why do so many people's email addresses display with weird charaters in them? Seems to be that way for everyone. The HREFs are okay, though.

yeah, it's a spambot hack I got from evolt's list archives. I realized about six months after I'd been a member of Evolt.org's mailing list, that the entire thing was online. Everyone's email address is online too, but they use "%40" in place of an @, and I haven't gotten any spam traced back to the archives yet. So I employed it here.
