MeFi keyboard shortcuts in Mozilla February 8, 2003 4:13 PM   Subscribe

If you're using a nightly build of Mozilla (anything released after Jan. 8th) you should now have keyboard and iconic shortcuts at MetaFilter, just like in IE for windows.

This should work for all platforms, though the keyboard shortcuts only seem to work in windows. I don't know how mac keystrokes are assigned in javascript.

It should work here now too!

So far, the only bug seems to be that the table that contains the form kinda jumps to the left when you click into it for me (using a feb 5th build of moz 1.3b on windows)

works in mozilla on the mac, though no keystrokes.

No go on Chimera. The buttons show up, but it kills whatever you highlight.

Does Chimera have builds that use the latest nightly mozilla builds?

They have nightly builds, but appear to be based on an older tree of mozilla. Oh well.

posted ithis in the next thread... somehow didn't see this one... would it be possible to set the selection and focus back into the textarea after I've clicked the button? sample code here or email me if that isn't enough

10sball, that's kickass. I'll definitely see if I can swipe that tomorrow.

Thank you. I'm one step closer to never opening IE again. Don't know if you've seen it, but there's a cool Mozilla plugin for development debugging, livehttpheaders -- it shows you, well, the live headers as you visit the page.

Buttons look broken to me in MetaFilter, but not MetaTalk: they're aligned to the left-edge of the textarea, the grey bar is too wide and the link button is missing.

Damn, just when I had finally got used to typing the code for links :-)

Are the nightly builds of Mozilla buggy? I'm using the 1.2a released in mid-December, but never thought of downloading any of the more recently nightly builds, cause I was never sure if they were stable...

1.2.1 is out so theres probaly not much reason to still be running 1.2a... 1.3b should be out any day now if you care to live on the edge but aren't comfortable running nightlies... and if you're on a mac or linux and found the nightlies (and releases) from like dec/jan too crash prone I think they've nailed the main cause this past week.

*wonders why he knows all this*

As one of the tiny few for whom this is still not available -- I'm stuck on Netscape 7 for the near future, to pull down my AOL mail via IMAP -- I can recommend Perfect Keyboard. I use it for a number of other keyboard macro tasks as well as inserting a blank <A HREF=""></A> text and putting my cursor at the quotes, both here and in Blogger. It also supplements Mozilla/Netscape's password manager for the (too frequent) times when it loses track of my cookies.

1.3b nightlies seem just as stable as 1.2 on my mac and pc.

Matt, there seems to be something extending out to the right, past the 'link' button on all the thread pages (if logged in). On my laptop it causes the page to display a horizontal scrollbar and unnecessarily stretch out to, I'm guessing, 800 pixels. If you 'select all' on any thread page, maybe you'll see what I mean.

On IE6 SP1.

I'm using a 2/28/03 nightly build ("1.4a") on Win2000 SP2 and when I click on the buttons, it just unfocuses the entire comments field without applying anything to the selected text. Both MeFi and MeTa.

No worries, Matt, I don't really "need" the buttons, but just thought you might like the headsup.
