List of MeFite blogs February 26, 2003 3:49 PM Subscribe
I've looked in the FAQ, the Wiki, riffola's user page, and nowhere can I find a comprehensive list of MeFiers' blogs. Does such a thing exist? If not, should such a thing exist? I think a portal showing recent entries from MeFiers' blogs could be nearly as entertaining as MeFi itself.
Actually, riffola does have a link to the links page which is supposed to be a random list of the web sites that users have put in their user profiles. That page is currently reporting a connection failure though.

Nope, no-one's made anything on the wiki about it. It would be quite a large job to do, even with the apparently dead links page. As for a MefiBlog portal, I hesitate to think of how busy it might get, considering that there are 17,000+ Mefi members. If only 500 had blogs that updated daily, and I suspect it's much more, then you're talking about a lot of entries.

ok, the link list is fixed. It's now sorted by newest members first, older after that.

Why, so you can read things like ME BITCHING ABOUT ALL THE RUDE PICKY-ASS PEOPLE WHO DERAILED MY GODDAMNED THREAD TODAY!!
Just kidding. That does not rate an entry. But I know there is plenty of "personal feedback" on members' blogs about the little sociology experiment that is Mefi. Interesting indeed.

Then you may want to consider changing the text above the links, which says it is "sorted randomly".

I liked it better when it was sorted randomly...

The random sort was what killed it. It was just too many links to random sort.

Matt, could you make it a static file updated say once a week? That should speed it up.

The newest-to-oldest sort is fun. Makes it really easy to see who among your nearest user-ID neighbours is still around. Hi quonsar, hi aaron!

OK - now somebody who's good with web services figure out a way scrape this list of URLs and integrate the weblogs.com recently changed data so that we can get a list of just the last 100 or so most recently updated blogs (that ping weblogs.com) blogrolling.com style.

What about scaping the RSS from the sites that have it, and using that for a portal list of some type.

So are we only interested in blogs that ping weblogs.com (whatever that means)?

It's only the ones that ping weblogs.com that are sending out a "hey world I just updated with new content" announcement that can be collected from a centralized source. So, if you want new stuff, then yeah, those are the ones you're going to go grab.
If you just want any old stuff, then hit any of the sites on that links page.
